Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Roving Journeyman (from The Corries) From: GUEST,kenny Date: 21 Jan 18 - 04:52 AM PS - thinking a bit more about it, Michael's song was more akin to the "Jolly Beggarman" narrative as recorded by "Planxty". Last sentence above is probably irrelevant to this particular discussion. Sorry about that. |

As for the "Little Beggarman", I remember the late Michael Marra singing a beautiful version of it in Blairgowrie Folk Club, around 1970. I have no idea where he got that particular version, and have never heard anyone else sing it anywhere since. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Roving Journeyman (from The Corries) From: RunrigFan Date: 19 Jan 18 - 10:05 PM This version recorded by Paul Mounsey Words Trad Journeyman *walking on gravel Oh! I am a roving journeyman, I roam from town to town, And whenever I get a job of work I'm willing to sit down, My kit's all on my shoulder and my graftin' tool in hand, And around the country I will go, a roving journeyman. Whenever I come tae Glasgow toon the lassies jump for joy, Says one unto the other "well, here comes a rovin' boy", Some treat me to a bottle and the others to a dram, And the toast goes round the table "Health unto the Journeyman!" I haedne' been in Glasgow toon a week but barely three, Before the Provost's daughter went and fell in love wi' me, She asked me for to dine wi' her and took me by the hand, And she proudly told her mother that she loved the journeyman "Ach, away ye go ye silly maid, I'll hear ye speak no more!, How can ye love a journeymand ye've never seen before?" "Mother, sweet, I do intreat, I love him all I can, And around the country I will go tae see my journeyman" Wi' yer linten addie, toorin' addie linten addie Tooral linten addie tooral linten addie aye Pots and pans and helping hands will see you through the day Linten addie tooral ooral, ooral addie aye Gi' yer penny to the journeyman to help him on his way. Ye'll need nae mair tae trudge on foot ye'll hae a horse and pair, My wealth, with thee, and poverty, contented I will share, So overflow the flowing bowl and drain it if you can, Toast the Provost's daughter and the roving journeyman. I am a roving journeyman, I roam from town to town, And whenever I get a job of work I'm willing to sit down, My kit's all on my shoulder and my grafting tool in hand, Around the country I will go, a roving journeyman. Wi' yer linten addie, toorin' addie linten addie Tooral linten addie tooral linten addie aye Pots and pans and helping hands will see you through the day Linten addie tooral ooral, ooral addie aye Gi' yer penny to the journeyman to help him on his way. I've been a wild rover for many a year, And I spend all my money on Whiskey and Beer, But now I'm returning with gold in great store, And I swear I will play the wild rover no more. I am a roving journeyman, I roam from town to town, And whenever I get a job of work I'm willing to sit down, My kit's all on my shoulder and my grafting tool in hand, And around the country I will go, a roving journeyman. Roving journeyman, roving journeyman. Roving journeyman, roving journeyman. I took from my pocket a handful of gold, And on the round table it glittered and rolled, I asked her for Whiskey and Beer of the best, What I told you before, it was only a jest! Around the country I will go, a roving journeyman. |
Subject: RE: Roving Journet man From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Oct 97 - 02:44 AM I was just goofing off. Sorry if it came out wrong. Sometimes our online words sound vitriolic when that's not the intention. There's something about this medium that makes it very difficult to read clearly between the lines. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Roving Journet man From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Oct 97 - 06:53 PM Carl, what I mean is that I got deeply and profoundly confused when I searched the database and found five songs that have the word "beggarman," and none with the title "Little Beggarman." The only one that has the term "little beggarman" is the one titled "The Beggarman's Song (Johnny Dhu)," so I assumed that was the tune for the "Roving Journeyman." Gee, all this could even confuse a person of HIGHER intelligence, eh??? But now I know. Thanks for the clarification. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Roving Journet man From: Carl Date: 06 Oct 97 - 06:42 PM Joe, what do you mean exactly ??? Bye the way "my" beggarman is the Jolly Beggarman you´ll find in the DT.( You know the Planxty version with the cool instrumental outro?) |
Subject: RE: Roving Journet man From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Oct 97 - 06:37 PM And a half dozen names to nearly every folk song, right? You'll find the "Little Beggarman" tune in the database by searching under "Beggarman." I know the song as "Johnny Dhu," if you and I are thinking of the same song, Carl. Could tend to confuse a person of lesser intelligence - that doesn't include any of us, does it????? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Roving Journet man From: Carl Date: 06 Oct 97 - 06:29 PM But lyrics are quite different. I agree, that you´ll find half a dozen songs sung to nearly every tune. |
Subject: RE: Roving Journet man From: Alex Date: 06 Oct 97 - 06:24 PM Roving Journeyman is the same tune as Little Beggarman or Roving Beggarman. The Scots and the Irish have an ancient and honourable tradition of stealing each others' tunes and claiming them as their own. |
Subject: RE: Roving Journet man From: Carl Date: 05 Oct 97 - 08:54 AM John, I don´t know the tune of the "Roving Gambler", but the "Little Beggarmen" is a different one. |
Subject: RE: Roving Journet man From: John Nolan Date: 04 Oct 97 - 09:33 PM Joe, If I mind correctly, it's the Little Beggarman (Irish) tune. |
Subject: RE: Roving Journet man From: Simon in New Zealand Date: 04 Oct 97 - 09:13 PM Alex, many thanks, the lyrics and the version are exactly what I've been after. |
Subject: RE: Roving Journet man From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Oct 97 - 05:45 PM Alex, is the tune the same as "Roving Gambler," or something different? -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Roving Journet man From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Oct 97 - 05:15 AM Hmmm. Let's keep this thread fresh until we find an answer. It sounds like a labor union adaptation of "Roving Gambler." I checked the books I have, and I can't find it. Anybody out there know labor songs? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Roving Journet man From: Bill in Alabama Date: 03 Oct 97 - 09:28 AM Simon-- The partial line you quoted is very much like the first line or so to "The Roving Gambler," which is in the DT. |
