Subject: Gettin' a 'Cowboy Geetar'! Any thoughts? From: Rick Fielding Date: 20 Jan 01 - 04:52 PM Howdy there Podners. A friend of mine seems to be getting into that "guitar nurd" stage and asked me about "Cowboy guitars". The best that I could come up with, was the Gibson J-200 (or Oriental equivalent). Also I thought of the Everly Brothers neat J-100 with fancy double pick-guards and Stars on the fingerboard. Most of today's cowboy (New-country) singers seem to favour Taylors or Takamines. Any advice for Tucker. P.S. She's gonna be a good'un.....cause she practices every day!! Thanks Rick |

I dunno......What's a "Cowboy Guitar" anyway? No, I'm serious..........If you think back to Roy and Gene and the like, it was pretty small bodied things or often a goofed up looking Martin. If I think of someone like Marty Robbins, I think REAL TINY bodied, parlor really. Or are you going more for some Jumbo style with fancy decor as you mention? The 55 and 65 series Guilds kinda' meet that look and they sound pretty good. Then again, a lot of Opry type cowboy types played "Grammer" and you can still find some of them around here and there. Smaller than a dreadnaught for convenience while playing in the saddle, good tone and bass qualities, and not real costly on the used market. A proper set-up is CRUCIAL to a new player for so many reasons. I've seen folks who've been struggling for months learning nothing and seriously hurting their fingers simply because their instrument had bad action and wrong string guages. Often the action at the NUT is way too high. A simple set-up can help someone learn in one quarter the time. I constantly work on all my instruments to keep them fine tuned and (if they don't object) try to do the same thing for my students. At the moment, I'm refinishing the peghead on one of Peter T's instruments. It got dinged a lot while we were trying to find out why it wouldn't play in tune. I tried everything with no luck...eventually trying to set it up as a raised saddle and nut slide guitar. Eventually I did some micro-measuring and found that the distance from the nut to the first fret was off by a hair. That's enough to throw the rest of it out of tune. Had to do quite a bit of carpentry but I think it'll be OK. If not....I give up. Maybe Peter can donate it to the Sally Ann. Takamine made a GREAT big body (J-200) guitar. With a double pickguard it'd look pretty country. Rick |

I believe it is a OOO size and is a limited edition (only 250 are going to be produced). It is not my cup of tea though no one will mistake this guitar for anything less than a cowboy's side paddle. |

Any guitars the old-time cowboys actually played were pretty much certainly what we would call "parlor" guitars now, since all guitars were that size then. A 000-something or an OM is a good compromise, though. I think the ideal cowboy guitar would be one of those real old Gibson small, all-mahogany, round-hole archtops. Can't think of anything glitzier or bigger than the J-200 shape. The Doves and Hummingbirds fit the bill for the dreadnought shape. Rick Trivia question for you "Justa", since you seem to know your stuff. Jimmie Rodgers did indeed play several Martins, (including the one mentioned)most far less ornamented than the "45"....BUT....he had an endorsement deal with ANOTHER guitar company. What company? He's pictured several times with their instruments. |

From: Justa Picker Date: 21 Jan 01 - 07:54 PM Well Mr. Fielding, I know that prior to getting the custom OOO-45, photos of a very young Mr. Rodgers show him with an O-17, and then around 1927 graduating to a OO-18, and then when he began to make serious money, he ordered the famous Blue Yodel OOO-45. But as far as the endorsement deal, well you've stumped me. My educated guess would be Stella. If I'm wrong, please answer the question, or it will make an insomniac out of me. Thanks. |

This says little about "authenticity" of course, but that's what I see mostly. |

The ULTIMATE cowboy guitar is the Epiphone Texan from the Gibson Epiphone era - the pickguard is littered with cacti, lariats, Stetsons and other cowboy paraphernalia. On the other hand, Gene Autrey and all those other movie cowboys played Martins, but they mainly made their names before the Texan was on the market. Another guitar that Gibson made with a "cowboy" image was the Southern Jumbo, usually referred to as the SJ model - not very elaborate and very good value for money if you find one. Me myself, give me the choice and I'd pick a Gibson Heritage as the ultimate guitar for a cowboy - the best-sounding late model Gibson, even if it doesn't have the look of a J200. Incidentally, the Everly Bros. models only look like a J200, and are smaller. In this line, the best value is to be found in the J100 (not many made, not common - usually cheap). A real find would be a 1930s Kalamazoo(Gibson's cheap label) flat top - looks like a sunburst J200 but cheaper - that's what Robert Johnson used, and he sounded OK even if he wasn't a cowboy. |

It was a 1961 model (without the pickguard adornments) that I bought used in a pawn shop. What a neck! What a feel! Plus my late sixties hero Tom Rush had one. Every so often I drop by the house of it's current owner to say hello, and I see it hanging on the wall. Just had some work done on it — new bone saddle and a few tweeks. Went to see it today and you've never heard loud. The volume is up at least 25 per cent and the bass is really jumpy. He's still going to get the action down a little for me and says that will affect the tone minutely, but I can't wait to get it back. Gonna love it even more! david |

They are small enought to be practical for trail life - yet pretty sounding for the campfire, poet songs. Having said that, my very favorite Jumbo is the Larrivee models. Just a killer sound, and works of art in the looks department. But the more reasonable priced models, are the commonly used (and rightfully so, by my reckoning) Taylors. They have a few dreadnaughts I like. |

("New Yorker") I've just bought one, and it's quite lovely. Similar to a small bodied Martin. Loud, full tone. Fabulous electronics. I'll be very surprised if I ever need a better one. The Martins are also very good. Do you want vintage or new? Makes a big difference to prices. Keep you eyes peeled for old Levins as well. My dad plays British fingerstyle rather than country, but his old "Goliath" is fabulous for fingerpicking. And it's a fantastic red/gold sunburst. Very pretty. I bought mine in the mid 70s for $500 and it will play with any acoustic on the market - today or yesterday - and I don't mean to sound conceited by the above. It was bought as a result of a comment Doc Watson made about his. I'd played many others before, Takamine, a small Gibson, Guild, Yamaha, and some I don't remember. My first was a no name with only 3 strings on it. Played? it for 4 months before I could afford a set of "Black Diamond" strings. Don't spend a lot at first as if you change your mind it can be expensive to recoup your investment. And play a lot of them before deciding as all guitars have different necks and play better for others than for self. The most important thing is to have fun. |

My best friend has a 44 Martin and I do love the sound of all of them. This Mossman has been with me for a long time, survived a mule wreck when I was packing in the back country of wilderness Idaho, a car wreck on the way to a gig, and a huge chunk of stupidity on my part over the years. But each little mark is a musical memory. If I was a rich man I'd buy another but suspect I'd never play it as this one is a dear friend. Funny how a hunk of wood can take on such a powerful personality! |

Mossman still builds them and I would bet they could have replaced the neck for you. If you still have it there is a Luthier near here that can build you a new neck for it. He can take a year or more to get the job done but he is the very best. His name is Jon Bolin and is listed in the Boise, Idaho phone book under "Bolin Guitars." If you'd like his # I will add it to this thread. My Mossman is a Tennessee Flat Top model - it was all the money I had at the time. Even though it is the least expensive of the line it is still appraised with whatever the D-18 models of the Martins are worth. And the other nice thing - this old box remembers the songs even though I've forgotten them sometimes! |

O'Malley, who is credited with writing many of the "cowboy" songs we sing to day says banjos outnumbered guitars 20 to 1 when he was cowboying. She might also check out Bob Flesher's site, Dr. Horsehair, for similar thoughts. Okay, that said she likely wants to be the one of twenty. So, she might choose one that is easy to throw in the chuckwagon. My son is a cowboy and singer and cowboy poet , "an' I ain't seen him anywar's near to a horse within his geetar." So she might choose a nice parlout guitar, like the 1850s Bruno that Ken Hamm recently had for sale and used on our CD. Beautiful tone, nice nice, but alas, sold before I could buy it. So, there's for authenticity. As for that silver screeen "cowboy" music, well, there's been lots of good suggestions made. They are what my Dad used to call "drugstore cowboys." (correct me if I'm wrong, Tucker) Bottom line though, is, when you meet that special "someone" (guitar-wise)....You Know! If it works out that way, maybe you can use "J-45" as your Mudcat handle. Yup..know about cowboys and banjos...that's why I bought a 60's FW5 open backed Vega at a pawn shop in LA...played it..knew I had to have it..that simple. Already got me a number of original tunes on it. But back to geetars. As Mr. Fielding said... I found me a sunburst (I agree "picker") 1965 J45 that I really like. Seller might be over pricing...I'm not sure. Was $2,800...got him down to $2,000 (canadian). I checked the internet and $1,600 U.S. would be the average price I saw. If this is the case and this guitar has no structural problems, then it seems like the price might be ok...what do y'all think? Only thing noticable to me was a crackly varnish and a B string that might not be holding tune...I wonder because the guitar was in perfect tune when I played it except for the B string which was off by half. It was very high mileage, but good condition - and the sound was, well; it just had to be heard. Superb sound.
