The Song was Written by my Grandpa John Hunter for a school play at Stand Grammar School in Whitefield. Mike Leigh heard it through one of his friends in the boys brigade (If memory serves me correctly they used to sing it on coach trips) My Grandpa wrote to Mike Leigh and told him that he' wrote it. He turned down money for it but in later versions of the end credits my Grandpa's name appears as a writing credit for the song. My Dad has a recording of him singing it somewhere but I'm fairly sure it's on a cassette buried in a box. All the best Anna |

The picture above, the town where I live, is of Ashton-under-Lyne looking at the nearby Pennines. Flash and Wincle are tiny places a stones throw apart in the 3 Shires area where Cheshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire meet. Flash holds a (contentious) title of the highest village in Great Britain and the weather in Flash, Wincle and Wildboarclough can be pretty grim. For what it's worth, the highest part of that area is also named after one of my paternal ancestors. I think Manchester suffers from 'big city' syndrome in that respect: the road system hasn't really been able to grow as the size of the city did. Shit road signs are probably an issue too. |

If my windows faced the other way, this is pretty much what I'd see. Although, a lot less bus station and a little more Pennines. Hardly the Highlands or the Rockies but probably just enough to add more than a little dampness. My ancestors lived in Flash and Wincle (3 Shires Head area) for hundreds of years though, and that is pretty high up. And cold and wet. |
