Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Take Me Back to Manchester From: GUEST,Anna Hunter Date: 28 Dec 16 - 06:47 PM If anyone still cares. The Song was Written by my Grandpa John Hunter for a school play at Stand Grammar School in Whitefield. Mike Leigh heard it through one of his friends in the boys brigade (If memory serves me correctly they used to sing it on coach trips) My Grandpa wrote to Mike Leigh and told him that he' wrote it. He turned down money for it but in later versions of the end credits my Grandpa's name appears as a writing credit for the song. My Dad has a recording of him singing it somewhere but I'm fairly sure it's on a cassette buried in a box. All the best Anna |

I'm confused (it's easily done) as to which place you mean when you say "that" and "when I first went to Wincle" sounds like some thing Cecil Sharp didn't think was important enough to collect! The picture above, the town where I live, is of Ashton-under-Lyne looking at the nearby Pennines. Flash and Wincle are tiny places a stones throw apart in the 3 Shires area where Cheshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire meet. Flash holds a (contentious) title of the highest village in Great Britain and the weather in Flash, Wincle and Wildboarclough can be pretty grim. For what it's worth, the highest part of that area is also named after one of my paternal ancestors. Guest,Shimrod wrote "Have you tried driving to Piccadilly station from, say, Swinton or Rochdale or Wilmslow? It's OK if you know the route - but try it from an unfamiliar direction - in the rush hour - it's horrible and not at all obvious". You could have stopped at "have you tried driving...?" as I don't drive! However, as I said before trains, trams, buses and coaches all terminate at Piccadilly. I think Manchester suffers from 'big city' syndrome in that respect: the road system hasn't really been able to grow as the size of the city did. Shit road signs are probably an issue too. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Take me back to Manchester From: wyrdolafr Date: 01 Feb 09 - 02:57 PM Les, I'm nearer the bottom of t'hills thant' town. If my windows faced the other way, this is pretty much what I'd see. Although, a lot less bus station and a little more Pennines. Hardly the Highlands or the Rockies but probably just enough to add more than a little dampness. My ancestors lived in Flash and Wincle (3 Shires Head area) for hundreds of years though, and that is pretty high up. And cold and wet. |

Doesn't the Tourist office face the other way, back toward Piccadilly rather than Peter's Field? Important to some, obviously not important to the likes of the Manchester council - look at the hassle regarding the plaque - or even Local Education Authorities - I don't know of anyone that was actually taught about this at school. I started doing a sewing piece about Peterloo last year. I'm going to have to get around to finishing it. Guest, Shimrod wrote: "Have you tried to find Piccadilly recently?" Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Take me back to Manchester From: greg stephens Date: 01 Feb 09 - 08:09 AM GUEST Martin Rich places this song as popular in Manchester in the 60's. It surfaces in a MIke Leigh film in the 90's. So, how come no other memories of it, either in the 60's or the intervening years? Was it used in a show, and then forgotten? I was in the region from the late 60's on, and I have no recollection of this. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Take me back to Manchester From: GUEST Date: 20 Nov 01 - 09:35 PM Hi team! I was looking for the lyrics of this song myself. Some version of it is sung jointly by the "heroine" and "(anti)-hero toward the end of a Mike Leigh film released about 1994. But I can't recall the name of the film. Not from Manchester, but I liked the film and the song. ML doesn't produce that many films, and the one in question should be readily identifiable from its dust jacket "Toubled young man from Manchester goes down to London to visit his old friends who have become London yuppies (more or less). Chaos ensues . . . |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Take me back to Manchester From: GUEST,Martin Rich Date: 21 Jan 01 - 03:16 AM I've remembered the first lines of the verse which goes something like this:
Take me back to Manchester where it's raining I think it was probably one of those little ditties which people made up their own verses I doubt very much if it was ever written down so I'll have to rely on people's memeories. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Take me back to Manchester From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 20 Jan 01 - 08:37 PM I'm afraid I'm baffled, too, but will keep looking. It certainly rains whenever I'm in Manchester, of course. Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Take me back to Manchester From: Sorcha Date: 20 Jan 01 - 06:56 PM I didn't find anything either, and if Ed, Malcolm or I can't find it, (well, add Dale and Gene, too) it ususally is not on the web. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Take me back to Manchester From: Zebedee Date: 20 Jan 01 - 06:45 PM I'll admit to be totally flummoxed, at least in terms of what I can find on the net. It might take a while before I have time to do that, so joining Mudcat and sending me a personal message might be helpful. Ed |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Take me back to Manchester From: GUEST,Martin Rich Date: 20 Jan 01 - 06:04 PM It was during the mid sixties and seemed to be current among some friends. I can only hope that someone else might be able to help. The tune was fairly simple music hall style. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Take me back to Manchester From: Zebedee Date: 20 Jan 01 - 05:42 PM Martin, I've lived in Manchester for many years, and have a fondness for the city that many wouldn't understand, but have never heard of this song. None of my usual web search strategies have come up anything. Do you have any more information to help us...? When you heard it, who sang it, what 'genre' the singer/song was, anything really... It sounds like a song worth finding. Ed |
Subject: Take me back to Manchester From: GUEST,Martin Rich Date: 20 Jan 01 - 05:17 PM For more years than I care to remember, when I lived in Manchester (England) there was a song that went:"Take me back to Manchester where its raining, I want to wash my feet in Albert Square."
