I watched the movie "Deliverance" the other night, and the question came up; "what are its origins?".

I assured those involved, in the most definite terms, that I would be able to return to them in a couple of days with a full and comprehensive breakdown of its history.

It's up to you now folks, I know you won't let me down.

Lox, I remember this being discussed before, and the info you want should be in some previous threads. Try typing "dueling banjos" in the "Digitrad and Forum Search" box at the top left.

I recall that there are two stories here--the history of the tune, and the history of its title. Apparently the title came from a caption used in a window display of banjos, and was applied to the tune when the movie was made. I found it pretty interesting, and I hope I'm remembering that correctly. The archived threads will expound and clarify.

FEUDING BANJO'S was recorded by Don Reno (on 5-string) and Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith( on tenor banjo), I think in the mid '50's. The tune was renamed DUELING BANJOS for the film, recorded by Eric Weissberg on banjo and Steve Mandell on guitar. The album release with that as the lead cut was actually NEW DIMENSIONS IN BLUEGRASS, which was originally released in the '60's with Weissberg and Marshall Brickman(who went on to write films for Woody Allen) on banjos, and I believe Clarence White played guitar.

It was known as Duelin(g) Banjo as early as the 1963 Dillards recording on their "Live!!! Almost!!!" LP. On that, it was also subtitled "Hootin' Banjo."
