Child #273, 'King Edward IV and a Tanner of Tamworth'

This ballad is intriguing me by its reticence. It is lovingly listed on most Child Ballad sites. A Google search comes up with numerous references and the Brewers version of the story it tells. There is a variant with the same number, but a different king and a tinker as the protagonists in the DT. It has cropped up in a few threads in the past, but inconclusively from the point of view of actually providing the Child version of the words.

One of my ambitions in life is to own both a full set of Child and the separate tunes, but, like much else, this has yet to be realised.

Can anyone provide a set of words that fit the title as given, or point me in the right direction?

OK, how did I miss it?

Why is this particular ballad being sought now? I must confess it was my daughter who started me on the quest, so I suspect a Dorothy Dunnett / Limond connection somewhere.

Sorcha, I've PM'd you to avail myself of your kind offer - please dpn't type it all out tho', sounds like too much of a marathon!

What a hero you are! Wish someone had done that for me. After much search, and few dollars, caved, and did the Book on Demand bit. Was still pricey, but no where near the 7-8 hundred dollar range i had been finding.

very nice book..I have that one, but it isn't the BIG one...which I will never own..*sigh*.(though I have friends who do, and I can go look..*smile*)..but I DO have the F.J. Child part of the "English Poets" series...(the first collection..before the 'edited' Child Ballads we know now..4 leather-bound little volumes with all sorts of interesting goodies...

Sorry Sorcha, it is gone. Don't know if it is the one that i had been searching for. Mine is HUGE, with almost all of the tunes in it. Think only 10 or 15 are missing. And no, I am not masochistic enough to break down cost tune by tune! ;o)
