"Brahms Lullaby" was the tune played by a small music box that was used to put me to sleep when I was a baby and until I outgrew enforced naps.

Fred Waring's Chorale did a musical version of "The Night Before Christmas" that captured my imagination at a very early age.

"The Hot Canary", a wonderful violin piece done by Florian Zabach was popular when I was a little kid. I truly loved it.

Not very long after that, Rock 'n Roll was born and I was an immediate fan.

But the day finally came that I heard "Tom Dooley" on the radio and I haven't been the same since.

I can always remember some music around our house, old records of Delia Murphy and the McNulty Family. My earliest vivid recollection is of my father shaving and singing "Ho Ro mY Nut Brown Maiden" and "The Green Bushes" I believe these were the first two songs I memorized, I was about 7 at the time.

Later on I heard my brother John play The Coolin on the violin and I fell in love with it. I have played it often on the mandolin since then but nothing compares to the first time hearing it.

Not sure what bought this to mind, but anyway...

I clearly remember my dad playing me to sleep with the Brahms Lullaby on his harmonica when I was very young. One of my favourite memories ever.

Later on, (aged about 6) I remember being hugely emotionally affected by the third movement of Dvorak's 8th Symphony. I guess that was the first time I realised how beautiful music was.

Interested in hearing about your first 'important' musical memories.

Ed

UK people; 'Distant Hills' - the theme from 'Crown Court' made me cry when I was about 8.
