There is a tune called the Dashing white sargeant... which is what we dance to locally around here...

Gay gordons has a good tune to off the top of my head I can't think of it.

Best of luck!

on the balance bit for the D.W.S... we do a paddy bar...

The scottish thingy where you put one hand up do a little shuffle, and then the other hand on the hip, then swap around and do the shuffle again...

Gay gordons... well - if it is a burns night... then most people would know it...

Find two people you can say to would they mind getting up on the floor to do the dance... and tell people to follow them... that's what usually happens...

dancers=

male on left, woman on right...

cross hands..man hold ladies right hand in their right hand - over the back of shoulder...

left hand to left hand up at shoulder level..

forward for 4 twist and back for 4 (heading in same direction)

men twiddle the ladies for 4

then a quick waltz hold turn for 3 then on again..

Can't be sure... I think I may have missed some out..

But best to get a couple to start it up for you...

And yes Scotland the Brave... was the tune I was thinking of...

Ella

Yes, Scotland the Brave does work for the Gay Gordons:

Couples dance anti-clockwise round the room, men to the inside. Hold is right arm round the back of the lady, about shoulder height; left arm in front about waist height. Dance forward for 4, turn round and dance backwards for 4 (still going anti-clockwise) then forward for 4, turn and backwards for 4 (to get back to where you started). Now the man walks forward while turning the lady under his right arm 4 times (count of 16?). Then waltz round (count of 16 again?).

Why is it so much easier to dance it than describe?:-)

Scott

Yes The SM is march waltz polka. And that's all it is. Over and over and faster and faster and round and round. Apparently It's is actually Danish, the Danes regard the Swedes as basically having their head up their arse when it comes to dancing (better be careful here) So that's th eposh march waltz bit, and the crazy polkaing is the danish part. So I've been told (apparently)

For Gay Gordons.. we use Scotland the brave, Loch Lomond, Marie's wedding, Kelvin Grove etc...... most things in 4/4 work.....

we did a Burn's night last night.. the piper forgot to turn up so I "accordioned" in the haggis........ and very yummy it was too......

You're all fantastic. Thanks!

Burns Tully apparently is off, having spoken to the organiser. I'm still none the wiser...

We've just been and picked up the P.A. and the Highland Kit for the piper... Only two hours in which to organise dances...Arghhhhhhh.

Thanks again for all the advice.

Jon

Cock o' the North (Aunty Mary) is the usual tune I've heard for the Gay Gordons.

But as the dance is only 16 bars most dance tunes have to be shortened from a 32-bar AABB AABB sequence to AB AB AB AB.

a) Don't suppose you can get away with Auld Lang Syne all night, hey? b) Didn't Burns do that PBS special on Scottish Jazz? c) The word "lynch" is an irish reference, I believe.

Here is another easy one to do
Drops of Brandy or Strip the Willow

Four, Five or Six couples in longways set men on right of band

1st. couple swing right arms woman goes down line swinging 2nd. man left arm then partner with right and so on to bottom of the set. At the bottom man swings bottom woman then partner and so on back to top of the set Both man and woman swing eachother then 2nd. couple and so on down the set After 1st couple have gone about three couples down 2nd. couple start as before

And if you need to stall for time, try telling this joke:

Tony Blair is being shown around a hospital.

Towards the end of his visit, he is shown into a ward, containing a number of patients showing no obvious signs of injury. He goes to greet the first patient and the chap replies: "Fair fa' yur honest sonsie face, Great chieftain e' the puddin'.race! Aboon them a' ye tak your place, Painch, tripe, or thairm: Weel are ye wordy o' a grace As lang's my arm."

Tony, being somewhat confused, grins and moves on to the next patient and greets him. His response: "Some hae meat, and canna eat, And some wad eat that want it, But we hae meat and we can eat, And sae the Lord be thankit." The third starts rattling off as follows: "Wee sleekit, cow'rin, tim'rous beastie, O, what a panic's in thy breastie! Thou need na start awa sae hasty, Wi bickering brattle! I wad be laith to rin an chase thee, Wi murdering pattle!" Tony can't take much more of this, so he turns to the doctor accompanying him, and asks, "What kind of ward is this? Is it a mental ward?" "No," replies the doctor, "It's the Burns Unit".

Or the one about Tony Blair who, after a visit to the White House with Bill Clinton was moaning to his wife as to how he would like the luxury of being US President. "Do you know" he said," Bill Clinton has a gold toilet in a room just off the oval office". Cherie Blair did not beleve this and so she phoned Hillary Clinton to ask if it was true. Hillary answered "No it was not true, but now we know who shit in Bill's saxophone"

Burns night report:

PA set up with little difficulty, one slightly dodgy mic channel, but that's about it. Audience of mature and sober persons quietly enjoying themselves. Out of sheer terror we played in a very focused sort of way. Went on till 3 in the morning. Guess who had to get up at 6 to be in work?...

Calling went pretty smoothly. Many thanks to all of you for advice. Some audience members reasonably up to speed with steps. Idiot Jon explained a few steps then messed up when it came to the dances, but apart from that pretty good.

HAGGIS was fabulous. Really very good indeed. Served with neeps/tatties and a slice of Venison. Mike piped it in very sucessfully (on his Jon Swayne Border half longs).

Toast to the haggis/ Toast to the Ladies/ Toast to the Laddies Dinner Dancing Some music to finish off.

Audience really enjoyed it. Bar staff insisted we did an extra hour, just for the staff (paid extra!).

Really good gig. Organisers want lots of return bookings. Great stuff.

Many thanks once again,

Jon

Excellent job by the sounds Jon...

We have ours tonight, I am looking forward to it.. I have to do the reply from the lasses... THough I know ours is not going to be a calm affair... our lot are a mad lot... it is mainly the group, their family memembers and guests who were invited to come along...

about 56 of us in all...

Why is there ALWAYS a dodgy mic channel... I thought it was only us who have these problems...

Regards

Ella

For those not wanting to be caught short next year, there is a Collins Pocket Reference book on Scottish Country Dancing, ISBN 0-00-470987-X, selling for about six pounds in Britain. They did it together with the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, so it must have some validity.

Nice one Dave. I'll keep my eyes peeled (ouch).

Best of Luck, Ella, although I'm sure you're a lot more prepared than I was!

I think they must make amp heads with knackered channels, specially to keep incompetents like me busy...

Cheers, Jon

Morticia -- I love that joke. As for Jon's affair, it seems to have been a gas. One thing puzzles me though -- where did you hear about this Burns Tully?? I rack my brains and pore over my famous Scots song index and can't figure out what the dickens it might be.

you can also make vegetarian haggis (lentils and all the spices) or buy it from McSweens
for help with Burns night speeches see this Butns site
it's from the World Burns Club - sound apocalyptic or maybe revolutionary!
