I fell in love with a pretty little thing
I asked her mother to let her go.
Now I won't cry my life away |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: railroad steamroad river and canal From: Stewie Date: 25 Jan 01 - 05:59 PM I have some vague memory of this, possibly from a Chad Mitchell Trio. It may have been only a fragment in a medley. All I can remember is:
Railroad, steamboat, river and canal I will see if I can dig up any more. It may not have been the Chad Mitchell Trio, but it was certainly some 1960s folk group that I heard it from. --Stewie. |

Subject: Lyr Add: RAILROAD, STEAMBOAT, RIVER & CANAL From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 26 Jan 01 - 03:30 AM This is the version by the Vipers: RAILROAD, STEAMBOAT, RIVER & CANAL (Trad)
INTRO: A-one and a-two and a-three and a-four
CHORUS:
Railroad, steamboat, river and canal
I fell in love with a pretty little thing
We're singing:
I asked her mother to let her go
We're singing:
Now many more back down the line
CHORUS
Now I won't cry (now I won't cry) my life away
Everybody sing:
CHORUS
Transcribed from the 1957 recording by Wally Whyton and the Vipers. I'm not totally convinced I got the middle two lines of the third verse right, but that's what they sound like to me. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: railroad steamroad river and canal From: folk1234 Date: 26 Jan 01 - 09:19 AM Your right Stewie. It was done by the CMT, before Chad left in the mid-60s. As with many songs they did, they modified the lyrics and tune to fit their truly unique vocal style. They made it much better. I don't think its in the CMT Songbook, and I don't know if I have a recording. I'll look tonight. |
Subject: Lyr Add: HELLO SUSAN BROWN (f/Chad Mitchell Trio) From: Stewie Date: 28 Jan 01 - 02:59 AM Thanks folk1234. I have found it. It's on a 1962 live recording by the Chad Mitchell Trio - 'At the Bitter End' Kapp Records PK 6002. They recorded it under the title 'Hello Susan Brown' arranged and adapted by Milt Okun. The lyrics are similar to 'Ragin' Canal (Two in the Middle)' in the DT as pointed to by Dick. Coffee grows on white oak tree etc
Two in the middle and I can't dance Josie Four in the middle etc Fiddle in the middle etc Wheel around, turn around etc Coffee grows on white oak tree etc --Stewie. |
