But they had in history been enemies. I forgot to add that during the last verse about dancing together, we girls paired up, joined both hands and skipped about in a circle. Play in the playground seemed more structured then. I can still visualise our drawings of The Dutch. We'd never seen a windmill, but we could draw one very well. All the men had a huge pipe sticking out of their mouths and massive baggy trousers. The women always wore a blue dress with a white apron and a white cap turned up at the ends. Surely this type of dress was from centuries ago? Why did we quite young girls draw that? Fascinating! |

Just across the water so trading very prolific, but far enough away for working class people for it to be exotic. The very distinct costumes and symbols, easy to draw, often portrayed in puppet shows, which is one possibility as to where your song came from. Then there's the American influence and plenty of pop songs around the forties, Tulips from Amsterdam, etc. |

There was always a finish to each line, ie:- Oh I'm a little Dutch girl etc a Dutch girl am I. Oh go away, I hate you etc I hate you I do! (We put our tongues out here) Oh why do you hate me? etc Oh why do you? Because you stole my necklace etc ...my necklace, you did! Oh please (2 notes) forgive me etc Oh please (1 note) forgive me. I will forgive you etc I'll forgive you. Then shall we dance together? etc Together we'll dance. There was no clapping at all, and needless to say, no boys would have been seen dead singing with the girls, so it was an all female song. In those days, we seemed quite obsessed with the Dutch. We were forever drawing and painting windmills and people in clogs with baggy trousers, and ladies in turned-up bonnets, tulips everywhere etc. I wonder why? |

The OP was asking for versions of the song/game that uses the tune of Ach du Liebe Augustin as mentioned by JoyBell, but as the OP was 10 years ago I don't suppose it matters much now. The other songs all have distinct but different tunes and have little else in common but the first line. You'll probably find all of these in numerous versions in Opie or Gomme or a more recent equivalent. |

We ended it with: Boy: Here is your hankie etc.(in place of ribbon) Girl: Come back I love you etc. The tune we used was "Ach Du Lieber Augustin". The tune I learned from an elderly Englishman for "Poor Jenny Lies a-Weeping" uses the same phrasing but the notes are different. You can sing both tunes together with an interesting effect. The routine started with the same exact pinky sequence described above and then moved to back & forth handclap motions.In that version, the boy was talking to a "to a very pretty girl with cherry curls". At the end of the rhyme the girls said "Get your black hand off of me" while attempting to slap each other on the forehead. Of course, each girl leaned back so she couldn't be slapped. I have also heard this rhyme performed without any introductory phrase. |
