Hello there Steve!
You may be right. I expect there was a lot of trading with the Dutch. But they had in history been enemies. I forgot to add that during the last verse about dancing together, we girls paired up, joined both hands and skipped about in a circle. Play in the playground seemed more structured then.
I can still visualise our drawings of The Dutch. We'd never seen a windmill, but we could draw one very well. All the men had a huge pipe sticking out of their mouths and massive baggy trousers. The women always wore a blue dress with a white apron and a white cap turned up at the ends. Surely this type of dress was from centuries ago? Why did we quite young girls draw that? Fascinating!

Hi Eliza,
Guesswork only.
They were one of our most colourful and closest neighbours. Just across the water so trading very prolific, but far enough away for working class people for it to be exotic. The very distinct costumes and symbols, easy to draw, often portrayed in puppet shows, which is one possibility as to where your song came from. Then there's the American influence and plenty of pop songs around the forties, Tulips from Amsterdam, etc.

We sang the 'Go away I hate you' version in the late forties.
There was always a finish to each line, ie:-

Oh I'm a little Dutch girl etc a Dutch girl am I.
Oh go away, I hate you etc I hate you I do! (We put our tongues out here)
Oh why do you hate me? etc Oh why do you?
Because you stole my necklace etc ...my necklace, you did!
Oh please (2 notes) forgive me etc Oh please (1 note) forgive me.
I will forgive you etc I'll forgive you.
Then shall we dance together? etc Together we'll dance.

There was no clapping at all, and needless to say, no boys would have been seen dead singing with the girls, so it was an all female song.

In those days, we seemed quite obsessed with the Dutch. We were forever drawing and painting windmills and people in clogs with baggy trousers, and ladies in turned-up bonnets, tulips everywhere etc. I wonder why?

I'm a little Dutch girl,
dressed in blue,
Here are the things I have to do,
Salute to the captain (salute to the person on your left)
Bow to the queen, (bow to the person on your right)
Turn my back on this dirty submarine (jump and spin so your back is facing)
Now my mother's mad,
Cause I didn't dress in blue,
cause' those are the things I hate to do
Spit at the captain,
Stick my tongue at the queen,
Escape this terrible, frightful submarine
----------------------------------------------
me and my big sister Jamie used to sing this all the time

My best friend Keri and I sang it when I lived in Cheltenham, England (I'm from USA) in 1976...we had a dance we did to it
I remember it like this:

I'm a little Dutch Girl.....
I'm a little Dutch Boy.....
Go away I hate you....
Why do you hate me.....
Cos you stole my necklace....
Here is your necklace....
Come back I love you....
Now we're getting married...
Now we've got a baby....
Now we are dead....
Now we're up in heaven...

My mother-in-law, who grew up in East Pittsburgh, sings this version:

I am a funny little Dutch girl!
As funny as can be
and all the boys in my home town
go wicketty wack for me.
My boyfriend's name is <fill in name of boyfriend>
he lives in/on <fill in boyfriend's hometown, or the street he lives on>
with a cherry for his nose
and pickles for his toes
and that's the way my story goes!

I may have the cherry/pickle and nose/toes words mixed up.

There are at least 4 children's songs/games floating around in this thread that just happen in some versions to have a similar first line. The OP was asking for versions of the song/game that uses the tune of Ach du Liebe Augustin as mentioned by JoyBell, but as the OP was 10 years ago I don't suppose it matters much now. The other songs all have distinct but different tunes and have little else in common but the first line. You'll probably find all of these in numerous versions in Opie or Gomme or a more recent equivalent.

A guest in this Mudcat thread thread.cfm?threadid=98109&messages=5
asked about an old song that includes the lines:

"One day when I was walking -- I met a wonderful boy -- he said he came from Kilarney -- I said that I did too -- some way we started talking -- he had a wonderful brough"

-snip-

That line reminded me of the "I'm A Pretty Little Dutch girl" rhyme and lead me back to this thread. It also lead me to these two other Mudcat threads:
thread.cfm?threadid=29995#382713 {Lyr Add: I'M A LITTLE DUTCH GIRL (jumprope chant)

and

thread.cfm?threadid=37757#1284620 {RE: Lyr Req: A Little Dutch boy (and Dutch girl)

Hopefully, these rhymes will lead back to the "One Day When I Was Walking" song that the Guest who started that thread was seeking.

This may be somewhat off topic, but here's another children's rhyme that includes verses found in other examples posted in this thread:

"My boyfriend gave me an apple, my boyfriend gave me a pear.
My boyfriend gave me a kiss on the lips and threw me down the stair.
I gave him back his apple, I gave him back his pear.
I gave him back his kiss on the lips and I threw him down the stair.
I threw him over Scotland, I threw him over France.
I threw him over the universe and he lost his underpants.
His underpants were yellow, his underpants were green.
His underpants were multicoloured and that's not all I've seen.
I took him to the sweetie shop to buy some bubble gum.
And when he wasn't looking, I shoved it up his bum.
He took me to the cinema to watch a dirty film.
And when I wasn't looking he kissed another girl. .."

For the record - We used the "I'm a Little Dutch Girl" song as a skipping rhyme in Melbourne Australia in the 1950s. We ended it with:
Boy: Here is your hankie etc.(in place of ribbon)
Girl: Come back I love you etc.

The tune we used was "Ach Du Lieber Augustin".

The tune I learned from an elderly Englishman for "Poor Jenny Lies a-Weeping" uses the same phrasing but the notes are different. You can sing both tunes together with an interesting effect.

This was a jump rope rhyme:
    I'm a little Dutch girl
    Dressed in blue
    These are the orders
    I must do.
    Salute to the captain
    Bow to the Quenn
And turn my back on the submarine.

or
A ball game rhyme:
I am a pretty little Dutch girl
As pretty as pretty can be
And all the boys around the town
    Are crazy over me.
    My boyfriend's name is Patty
    We come from Cincinnati
With a crinkle in my nose
    And bells on my toes
And this is the way my story goes
    I L-O-V-E love you
    And will K-I-S-S- kiss you
    I will K-I-S-S kiss you
    In the P-A-R-K- park.
    I H-A-T-E hate you
    And will K-I-L-L killy you
    I will K-I-L-L kill you
    In the D-A-R-K dark.

Children's rhymes are made by stringing together alot of different verses that can stand alone, or which can be used in other rhymes.

A version of the "kicked him..." line that is used in the "Dutch Girl" rhymes may also be used in the extremely popular {handclap?} rhyme "Miss Susie {or "Miss Lucy" etc} Had A Steamboat {Tuboat}":

Here is one of the numerous versions of that rhyme from the Wheee! Blog thread:

Miss Susie as I remember it:

Miss Susie had a steamboat,
the steamboat had a bell ding ding,
the steamboat went to heaven,
Miss susie went to
hello operator,
give me number nine,
and if you disconnect me,
I'll chop off your
behind the refrigerator
there lay a piece of glass
Miss susie sat upong it
and broke her little
ask me no more questions
tell me no more lies
the boys are in the bathroom
zipping up their
flies are in the city
bees are in the park
Miss susie and her boyfriend
are kissing in the
d-a-r-k
d-a-r-k
d-a-r-k
dark dark dark
the dark is like the movies,
the movies like the show
the show is like the tv set
and that is all i know know know
i know i know my ma
i know i know my pa
i know i know my sister
with the sixty dollar, sixty dollar sixty dollar bra bra bra
my mother is godzilla
my father is king kong
my brother is the stupid one
who made up this song
my mother gave me a nickel
my father gave me a dime
my sister gave me a boyfriend
his name was frankenstein
he made me do the dishes
he made me wash the floors
he made me clean his underweard
then i kicked him out the door
i kicked him over london
i kicked him over france
i kicked him over hollywood and he lost his underpants

GUEST,mg -I think every child thinks her {or his} version of a rhyme is either the ONLY words to that rhyme or the OFFICIAL version of that rhyme.

Here's another version that I collected from a great thread on schoolyard rhymes. See the source below.

"I Made Up one with my cousin when i was in the fourth grade it goes a little like this...

MY boyfriends name is tony
he came from the land of balogna
with a pickle for a nose
and 3 flat toes
thats my boyfriend TONY!!

One day he gave me peaches
One day he gave me pears
One day he gave me fifty cents and
took me to the fair

and when the fair was over
i asked him to take me home
he said he had another date
so he better go alone

I gave him back his peaches
i gave him back his pears
i gave him back his fifty cents
and kicked him down the STAIRS! "

Here's a handclap rhyme that is similar to the Dutch girl rhyme found upthread:

Note: __ Corresponds to a space between two words

Wooble Wooble Wooble and the deep blue sea
        I am a little __ first grade *
as pretty as can __ be be.
And all the boys around my house
go crazy over __ me me.

My boyfriend's name is __ Yellow.
        He comes from Ala__bama
        with 25 toes
and a pickle on his nose
and this is how the story goes.

One day I was ah __ walkin
I saw my boyfriend __ talking
        to a very pretty girl
        with strawberry curls.
And this is what she said

        "I L-O-V-E __ love you."
        "I K-I-S-S __ kiss you."
        "I A-D-O-R-E __ adore you"
        So S-T-O-P. STOP!

Source: elementary school age African American and Vietnamese girls {6 years old} Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 2000

Directions:
This rhyme is recited in unison by girls. The girls stand and form a circle. Each girl fi and holds the "pinky" (small finger) of the person standing next two them on each side. The girls recite the introductory line "Wooble Wooble Wooble and the deep blue sea" while swinging their arms back and forth in rhythm with each word. "Deep blue sea is chanted faster than "Wooble Wooble Wooble".

The group then let goes of the little fingers and begins chanting the rhyme. At an acknowledged starting point in the circle, one person lightly slaps the hand of the person to her right of her as she and the group chants one word of the song. With each word, the child whose hand has been slapped then slaps the hand of the child on her right.

The action continues around the circle. The person whose hand is slapped at the last word "Stop" is out. When the number of players is down to two people, the two girls stand facing each other and take turns slapping each other's hand with each word. The person whose hand is slapped at the end of that rendition of the rhyme is out, and the other person is the "winner".

* The girls said 'first grade' instead of 'first grader'. In 200e some of the same girls recited this rhyme along with other girls. A few of the girls started out saying "I am a little ___ first grade" and one of them said "We're in the second grade now" So the group changed the words to "second grade" {not "second grader"}

****

I also collected this rhyme in 2004 from two girls {7 & 9 years old} who attended the same Pittsburgh elementary school as the other girls. The introductory phrase that was used for this rhyme was "Zing Zing Zing at the bottom of the sea". The two girls performed this rhyme as a partner handclap. The routine started with the same exact pinky sequence described above and then moved to back & forth handclap motions. In that version, the boy was talking to a "to a very pretty girl with cherry curls".

At the end of the rhyme the girls said "Get your black hand off of me" while attempting to slap each other on the forehead. Of course, each girl leaned back so she couldn't be slapped.

I have also heard this rhyme performed without any introductory phrase.

When I was really really young, my mother enrolled my sisters and me in a community dance school. I remember dressing up in a cute crinoline costume and dancing to the words of the song

Come little Dutch boy come dance with me
Come little Dutch boy romance with me
Come dance with me while the lights are low
hold hands with me cause I love you so
One two three one two three
up we go
one two three one two three
away we go

And that's all I can remember.

Actually the "romance with me" and the "hold hands with me" may be products of faulty memory-but they work for me...

"Oh I'm a little Dutch girl, a Dutch girl, a Dutch girl
Oh I'm a little Dutch girl from over the sea

and "from over the sea" was repeated at the end of each 'verse'.

I'd forgotten most of the other verses, so thanks for jogging the ageing brain cells. I think we had two lines of children facing each other, advancing and retiring, rather than 1:1.

-Joe Offer-

I'm a little Dutch girl,
As pretty as can be,
And all the boys on the baseball team
Are crazy over me.

They gave me all their apples.
They gave me all their pears.
They gave me fifty cents
And kicked me down the stairs.

My mother wanted peaches.
My brother wanted pears.
My father wanted fifty cents
To fix the broken stairs.

My boyfriend gave me peaches.
My boyfriend gave me pears.
My boyfriend gave me fifty cents
To fix the broken stairs.

My mother ate the peaches.
My brother ate the pears.
My father ate the fifty cents
And fell right down the stairs.

My mother gave me peaches.
My father gave me pears.
My boyfriend kissed me on the cheek
And fell right down the stairs.

I am a little Dutch girl
As pretty as can be be be
And all the boys around my block
Are crazy over me me me.

I'm a little hippy
Dressed in blue
Here are the things

Spit at the captain.
Kick the queen.
Burn my draft card

Boy sings as he dances forward and back.
I am a little Dutch Boy, a Dutch Boy, a Dutch Boy, I am a little Dutch Boy, a Dutch Boy I am.

Girl. "Oh go away I hate you...."
Boy. "Oh why do you hate me..."
Girl. "Because you stole my ribbon..."

Not the children's one in the database which is 'I'm a pretty little dutch girl' but another childrens one which goes something like,

"Oh I'm a little Dutch girl, little Dutch girl, little Dutch girl Oh I'm a little Dutch girl and .....

Oh go away I hate you, I hate you, I hate you. Oh go away I hate you, and ... "

My sisters used to sing this - skipping or clapping (can't remember which)

Sung to a famous tune - don't know the name of it.
