that's the point! I didn't 'know' it...it was sheer inductive logic to imagine what battle would have enough 'hard to remember' about it, and still be famous enough to not ne totally obscure...it 'could' very well have been "Bouganville" or "Trafalgar"...but it just didn't 'feel' like it would be.

Used to be a party game based on that way humans can do stuff like that...."If you were a color, what color would you be?"...."black"..."ok, Lucretia Borgia"..(my 2nd greatest triumph)

hey!...I had almost forgotten, in 5th grade, I was on a local version of the "Quiz Kids" radio program...mostly, I think, because I was the only one who even raised their hand during tryouts when they asked what US state had the most bordering states. It is Tennesee, and I named 'em ALL.

Also, I once answered a TV quiz program question before it was asked!..The topic was "Famous Battles" and contestants could choose 3 levels of question..more $$$ if you answered 2/1 or 3/1.....so I said (to the TV) "I'll take 2/1 and the answer is Thermopylae." Sure enough, a contestant chose that option, and they asked him.."What Greek battle was fought against the Persians in which.....blah, blah, blah..." .....My wife and kids just stared and asked "how'd you know that?"...my greatest triumph...unfortunately..

Hells Bells, kat, I never KNEW anything but 1st and 3rd. (and still don't) Was just getting into 2nd when I got fed up with the Classical Snob Crap! I got my first real kiss at that music camp, when I was 15.........

My only Solo performances were at State Contest.......and it felt like a BIG stage, let me tell you!! Always got I A's, and was terrified. Now, I LOVE big stages. The bigger the better......just goes to show you, huh?

I no longer have actual animal leavings on the rug, just stains (we finally got our current dog housebroken).

When I get nervous, my hands shake and I forget things (such as, the tune I was about to play).

I had an abnormally stable upbringing and freakishly sane, supportive parents. I think I needed them, though, because I ended up being an abnormal child.

When I was little, I looked like one of those troll dolls with colored hair. Well, I had limp brown hair but the face was the same. People always think that must have been cute, but would you REALLY want your child to look like one of those?

I once had a cat that could answer the telephone. When she died, my parents were afraid to bury her because they thought our new dog would dig her up, so my dad cremated her with gasoline in the barbecue. We still have her bones, in a little paper coffin in the den. My brother thinks it's creepy but I like knowing where she is (if we buried her and then moved, she'd be in someone else's backyard, and that bothers me).

You are young, yet, Amergin...it takes time to buildup...but one thing you've not said is you are a poet and that you grew up with some pretty neat sounding aunties and musical uncles...so think back on your times with them and something will prick your memory...come share it with us when it does, darlin'

Sorcha, when I went on that, to me, HUGE stage at BYU, all by myself, to audition to snob faculty who were in darkness before me, I totally froze up, couldn't remember any of the positions, except first and third. It really burst my bubble; the first time I ever got put in second violins! I did make my way up in high school from there, though, so I guess I didn't totally lose my confidence. I did have fun with the kids I met. Fell in love with an "older man" (I was 13, he was 15) from San Francisco! LOL

Oh god, kat, that reminds me-----I went to the Kansas University music camp grades 6,7,& 8. I was never Concertmistress there (or in my HS orchestra either) but I had a blast and LOVED the music we played. Was my first "away from home" experience.

All participants were required to be in a Choir. The good singers got to be in Chamber Choir, and the rest of us (plus them) in Concert Choir. I'll bet they are still sorry they required it of me!! But, it was the only opportunity I will ever get in this life to sing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", (Mormon Tabernacle arrangement!) Plus, Brahms Lullabies..... I have LP's to prove it. What a time.......

Nudging the ole memory here, Mets...my sisters, all three, wear contacts and, when we lived close by, I was always the Mistress of Finding Lost Lenses, but never in a running stream like that! Hats off to you!

I won a beautiful baby contest and as a prize had a free portrait taken each year up through 5 yrs old. My mom and dad used to sing that song to me, "You must've been a beuatiful baby, 'cause now you're a beautiful doll..."

When I was in 6th grade (11/12) I was concert mistress of our school's orchestra. My teacher had the first chair of second violins and me work up a duet of Silent Night which we played on local tv. It was the only tv station in the whole of Western Colorado at the time.

When I was concert mistress in junior high, my last year, 9th grade (14/15) I won a scholarship to summer music camp. I had fun but hated the music they made us play. We were the free recording grunts for the avant garde faculty at BYU. I still have the LP on which I played in the orchestra...a very stupid, boring, minimalist piece called "Feathers."

The only award I ever received was in the form of a beautiful, handmade card from my 8th grade art teacher, Eva Macias (she was a New Zealander - wonder if she is still alive). I had it framed and still have it hanging on my wall. The inscription was, "To Allan, who has the most original ideas".

At 11 months of age, I was voted prettiest baby girl in Mount Vernon, N.Y. It's been downhill ever since. With one exception, After being berated, made fun of and verbally beaten to a pulp by Joan Rivers, who was making funof people who live in mobile homes.I had called the show to say, we all don't know the sheriff by his first name,we all don't have pink flamingos in our yard, etc. This creature went on and on, I was finally able to get a line in. "Joan, I'm glad you have a job in radio, because your too old and ugly for the Whore House." And it was not bleeped.

Let's see. Hmmm.

When I was 6, I got my picture in the Jacksonville Daily News (NC)...right up front, when my class sang Christmas carols at a local rest home.

When I was 7, I had a Christmas story I wrote and a Thanksgiving drawing I did that were printed in The Orange County Register (CA).

When I was 11, I won first prize in a Nationwide art contest sponsored by Crayola.

When I was 13, I won 2nd place in my age group & region for an AT&T-sponsored Olympic poster contest. All the winners (including mine) were used as decoration for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

CamiSu,

My syneasthesia is the dead common Colour Hearing thing.

Mainly, I hear musical keys as:

C maj/Chrome yellow D maj/Bright leafy green E maj/Silver Grey F maj/Orange, slightly rusty. G maj/Royal Blue A maj/Mahogany Brown B maj/Lilac

C minor/Inky blue/black D minor/British racing green (the dark one) E minor/Light marble grey F minor/Red, Crimson, slightly bloody. G minor/Dark Blue, hints of purple A minor/Dark brown, rosewood, victorian furniture. B minor/Purple, very rich and dark.

also a slack handful of sharp/flat keys give off impressions of colour. The more music I do, the stronger it gets. When I was touring, doing stupid hours (9 hours singing per day for 2 months at a time) I started to see shapes, movement etc. Very strange.

It tends to go away again if I stop playing for a bit. Also, if I have a cold, it tends not to be so noticeable.

Fascinating stuff, eh? Jon

I once appeared in a student newspaper as a (fully clothed) pinup claiming, rather unconvincingly, to be an off-duty alligator wrestler.  Now that I am much older, I too have catsick on the floor between my desk and the radiator; it's been there for months, but it's dried to powder and doesn't smell.  One day I'll shampoo that carpet, but meanwhile: to hell with it, I have far more interesting things to do...

Oh, and there's definitely a mummified frog behind the wardrobe, but I can't quite reach it.

I have been mentioned on local radio (Viking FM and Trax FM) many times, I have been mentioned on Children's BBC and CITV and I've been mentioned on Radio 1. I havealso been seen for about 5 seconds on the Redcar version of Look North. I've called for a dance at Redcarfolk festival and Keith Donelly dragged me up on stage and forced me to sing at Crewe and Nantwich folk festival 1996. I also have a microphone blow up when I was snging in Russia. I didn't realise I was that lousy!

Going on to my journalistic credit, I have had a book review printed in the Doncaster Free Press when I was 6, and I had a poem printed in the school newsletter when I was in Year 8 (12-13 year olds). My biggest journalistic achievement was having an article published in the NATIONAL Young Archaeologist Club magazine in June last year!!

I'm also a Blue Peter badge winner.

That good enough for you?

Oh yeah, and I got up to Grade 3 cello before packing it in.

I used to have very keen visual perceptions, I once managed to spot, amid the bubbling current and rescue a friends floating contact lens, that she had lost about 50 ft upstream from where I was crouched at the river. Everyone thought I was joking when I said I found it.

On the other hand, I have never found a four leaf clover in my life, while my daughter, when she was small, could find in our little patch of lawn, at least one a week.

I spent 2 years in the Army, rising to the rank of 4-star General before returning to civilian life to train for the Olympics. I took the bronze medal in the shot put at the 1976 games, and moved up to capture the gold at the 1980 games. In 1982, I was elected to the House of Representatives, serving in that capacity for 12 years. Upon moving to Canada, I served as Prime Minister until retiring to write full time. In 1996, I received the Nobel Peace Prize, and in 1997 the National Book Award for my presidential biography, "Millard Fillmore: A Life?" In 1998 I entered the state fair and received the Pullet Surprise. For the last three years I have held the world light-heavyweight boxing title, have posed for Playfiddler magazine's centerfold, and I like to reheat dinners in my spare time.

I used to have a Magic Navigator ability -- I could translate and combine vectors and even in terribly complex seas could choose a course which would bring us directly to landfall 2 or three days later exactly on the money where we meant to be, with no radar, RDF or satcom. I make great spaghetti. I used to be able to make girls blush just by looking at then but I am not allowed to exercise that ability any more, so it has fallen off, so to speak!

Shortly before my gramma passed away in 1933 she told me the good mushrooms were the ones that curved down and were pink in the cup on the underside. She was the only one I ever picked mushrooms with, so i've never picked mushrooms since and I'd be a little nervous taking on that responsibility. I'd be glad to carry the little pail to put them in, if some one else wanted to handle the picking.

Easy as she goes, Sorcha.

I'm just now reading this...not enough time.

I can sing harmony with most songs the first time I hear them - words and everything. Nervousness interferes with this, though.

I can hold one eye in place and move the other one all over. I have a photo (described as "scary" by another 'Catter) of me doing this, taken by David, bbc's son.

Alison, I thought everyone could stick their toes in their mouths!

I used to be able to pick up coins with my feet, but I haven't tried it recently.

I've learned most of what I know about computer stuff because someone once wouldn't show me how to do something. I love solving problems. If you want me to figure something out or learn, tell me I can't do it.

"My name is John. I'm a manager . . ."

Actually, it turns out that I am really good at it. I sort of fell into being the general manager of a company that builds and sells musical instruments and employs 40 people. I am involved in all the hiring and firing, and do all the personnel reviews. I don't lose my temper at work. I treat everyone respect, even when I have to reprimand them in some way. I have discovered a skill for consensus building and for finding the win/win solution. I fostered a workplace that stresses personal responsibility and now two of the four departments don't have managers or supervisors anymore -- they are completely self-managed groups and it is working great (it was my idea to try it out). I seem to have the liking and trust of the owners of the company and of everyone who works there. NOT what I expected to be doing with my life.

Well, OK, this something I would put on my resume, but it's not something I would normally talk about on Mudcat.

Mets, my front door is blocked by CatSick---LOL, I ought to go to bed, huh? One day at a time? Hell, I just do it one trip behind the wheel at a time, and I don't even like to drive!! Thanks, Mets.

Aw Sorcha, don't let it get you down, get a good night's rest and tackle just one small thing in the morning and try not to let the big picture overwhelm you. I know, easier said than done.......and this from someone who has a big pile of dog s**t at the front door and its been there for two days but becuse the door clears it and doesn't smear it, when I open it, I haven't bothered to clean it up.

Hey, I stopped dusting YEARS ago. It's really great for Halloween, and for Christmas I just throw some glitter on the cobwebs and call it tinsel. I have been planning to get rid of some stuff, but haven't had the time to sort through it, and then don't have the fortitude to actually get rid of it when I do. I am here now instead of asleep.

Don't worry, your daughter will get better and things will get different, and if you work it out carefully, you might be able to get enough sleep at least a couple nights a week. Hang in there.
