The man's name is spelled 'Goble'. I have the song on a record, but I can't be bothered digging it out and transcribing it for someone who is too lazy even to express their request in a simple sentence in the message box.

From: Stewie

Because you appealed to my better nature, kat - and because I also have it on CD by Larry Sparks which does not involve dubbing on to cassette for transcribing. I bet our guest never comes back though.

BLUE VIRGINIA BLUES
(Pete Goble/Leroy Drumm)

Have you ever been to Richmond in November
When the cold Virginia rain is comin' down
Friend, I'm here to tell you it's no pleasure
If you're all alone and a stranger to the town
Don't take me wrong, I do like East Virginia
And Richmond's full of hospitality
Except for one Virginia girl I know of
That made a perfect love wreck out of me

Chorus:
Blue Virginia blues
There ain't no blue like blue Virginia blues
There's no girls in the whole wide world
Can break your heart like Virginia girls
There ain't no blue like blue Virginia blues

She called me up in St Paul, Minnesota
Said I need you in Richmond right away
Take the bus and I'll meet you at the station
Bring some clothes, I might want you to stay
My bus pulled in the station late this evening
There ain't a soul around this place but me
She must have changed her mind or she's forgotten
And her name ain't in the phone directory

Chorus

I wish I had the money for a taxi
A warm and cosy place to lay me down
Instead of standing all alone in Richmond
While the cold Virginia rain is coming down

Chorus

I realised that myself, Sorcha, just after I posted and was about to rectify the error. I became confused by name changes. My apologies to kat and Susan.

LOL, Charlie, (which means Laughing Out Loud). Glad you got your song, finally. We were all computer ignormamuses at some point, just keep trying to learn, and BTW (By The Way), all capitals is usually interpreted as shouting...Come on back, now, ya heah, as I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I was probably having a Cranky Day. I do that now and again.

Debbie, all I can tell you is that it was first released on Bill Emerson and Pete Goble 'Tennessee 1949' Webco WLPS 0123. The sleeve note says that the album is 'all new material'. The song was published by Brandykeg Pub.Co. The LP date is 1986.

"Pete Goble was first hooked on bluegrass when he heard Flatt and Scruggs' "Down The Road." He started writing songs in 1957 with his first few being "You'll Be a Lost Ball," "I'll Drink No More Wine," and "I'll Never Take No for an Answer." An early songwriting partnership with Bobby Osborne led to such hits as "Big Spike Hammer" and "Son of a Sawmill Man." In 1961, Pete met longtime friend and collaborator Leroy Drumm. Writing together since 1971, the team has penned such bluegrass favorites as "Georgia Girl," "Julie Ann," "I Won't Need Your Nine Pound Hammer," and "Blue Virginia Blues."

In late 1986, Pete Goble and Bill Emerson released a highly-acclaimed album entitled "Tennessee 1949" [on which Blue Virginia Blues appeared] (Webco WLPS-O123)."

So, sometime between 1971 and 1986.
