Larry, I know you want your performances to be perfect but for a non-purist like me,having the extra tracks, even if more rough and ready, made it more personal and special. I tend to prefer my jazz records to be live concerts rather than studio sessions, even if there's the occasional "fluff". However, I can understand if you want to promote the band you want a professional attitude from the members, so good luck with the recruitment drive(then I can boast "I knew him when..." and sell the CD at auction for a fortune and retire!)

Hi Roger:
You hit the nail on the head! It is the lack of commitment on the part of the band to making this their first priority which makes the out put from the band so fustrating. I drove 300 miles, last week, to get the band into a studio for the first time (the CD you have is NOT a studio recording, it is a live in the living room perfromance). Two out of five in the band did not show up! The band member who was supposed to stay on and do the mixing, didn't, in short they are not putting in the time to reherce or the commitment to show up and record.
SO... I am starting a pool of other musicians from who I hope to replace most of the band members soon, unless they make real commitments to the band.
Yup, you bad little monkies... you know what is on the horizon if you don't get with it... (he said over his shoulder to the band...)
Among the new members, now working in the pool is Eve Zanni, the ex-wife of Johnney Keenan. Eve has played in Paddy Kennan's jazz band, and has a wonderful approach to traditional ballads. She and Gina (Gina is the most committed member of the band, not at all one of the bad little monkies...) We are also auditioning a new fiddler.
I also put a few tracks from a rehersal on your CD, Roger, if I remember right, everything past the first two, which were livingroom recordings but not rehersals...
But even in the rehersals, on Yvettes song, the song about Indian forced assimilation in Canada, followed by the wise maid... a member puts two little tag notes on what was to be a clean break, so I, frowning at him, miss notes on the second phrase of the wise maid (the wistle solo) a tune I have been playing for what 30 years!
SO in short, I have two huge mountains to crawl over, one, getting committment from the band, two, getting enough gelt, loveh, semolians, long green, in short cash... to get real time in a studio.

Well,Larry. I listened to the rest of it yesterday. I enjoyed the informal atmosphere, more like a real ceilidh than a studio overproduction. I was a little disappointed, given your accounts of disagreements in tha band, that no-one said "mind me harp" or "was that a bum note, Sean?" (Rick knows what I 'm referring to!). Many thanks.

Oh Kat... I hope so... if you only knew how hard it is to keep all the bad little monkies playing nice music... Thanks Kim, If you can get me the address for your radio station I will send them a new recording of Amadou Diallo. It is better than the acoustic recording, having been done in the studio, but two of our number were absent, had to stick a green guitar player in, who made a few boo boos. It is enough to make you cry or worse... I just want to get a few people who care enough to practice and play what I think are a few good tunes. No one really cares, other that one other member of the band, I wont single any out in anycase.

Thanks, Larry, Prince of lawyers, (now that's a conjunction of words you don't hear often! A lawyer who plays bodhran and uillean pipes must be a masochist!), for the CD, which arrived yesterday. Although Irish music isn't my particular "bag" I have enjoyed what I've listened to so far and there's a nice mix of moods.
As you all know, Larry is too modest to promote himself or his band so I'm happy to do my bit.
If you're near NYC go and see them.
Get their CD.(OK Larry, you can let go my arm , now!).

Well, I went and saw the real thing LIVE. Sorcha Dorcha is talented, professional, and a wonderful musical experience. Larry is an amazing talent with a voice like an angel - Sorry Larry, it's true. His "Ballad of Amadou Diallo" is beautifully written (by him) and performed with touching simplicity and clarity. He had me in tears -annoying since I refuse to cry at movies or songs. His fellow musicians perform as one. A lovely soprano (sorry, I didn't get her name)and a clever mandolin stand out in mind. See them live if you can. Grab a CD if that is your only option.

Damilolla was a boy of about 11 from Nigeria. His parents sent him to live with family here for a better chance. He was racially victimised at school and stabbed on his way home from a computer class at the library. He tried to drag himself home but collapsed and died in the concrete stairwell of a tenament. There were a number of people about. It is believed his attackers were children from the Carribean community.

I don't know about the Taylor case. Tell me a bit about it, and I will mention it in the introduction of the song next week. This week, the second year since the killing of Amadou Diallou, shot 47 times, unarmed in his hallway, the Federal Government anounced that there will be no civil rights charges brought against the police that shot him.
Where are the anti lynching laws we begs for, these many years?

I cannot make NYC or NY for that matter, but if you guys ever get close to my part of the country (Central Florida) I, not unlike Amergin, would walk, barefoot in the freezing snow (in Florida?) to come see you. I would howewver, have the common decency to keep my clothes on, lest I should run off others that have come to partake of your musical talents.

Now that Concorde has been grounded,it's a lot harder for us Brits to pop across to NY for the odd concert, but Sorcha Dorcha has much to offer us..
Larry's own fine song Amadou Diallo, could have been written for our own tragic Damilola Taylor, wretchedly killed soon after arriving in London.
Red Turpin is rich in redolent English place names, not least the much celebrated in song, Hounslow Heath. The very sound of it will bring tears to the expats eye, as they recall rambling in its verdant lovelieness, perhaps on route to Heathrow to catch the Concorde to NY.

Great stuff, Larry. Just got it, with Amadou and Turpin Hero.

First time I'd heard the suggestion Dick Turpin maybe got away. Since he was born and carried on his trade only a few miles from where I live, I'd be pleased if he did.

Incidentally, here's an extract from the Gentleman's Magazine of the time, about the execution on April 7 1739 (taken from a book about highwaymen called Stand and Deliver by Patrick Pringle):

The notorious Richard Turpin and John Stead, were executed at York for horse-stealing. Turpin behaved in an undaunted manner; as he mounted the ladder, feeling his right leg tremble, he stamped it down, and looking around him with an unconcerned air, he spoke a few words to the topsman, then threw himself off, and expired in five minutes.

He declared himself to be the notorious highwayman Turpin, and confessed to a great number of robberies, and that he shot the man that came to apprehend him on Epping Forest, and King, his own companion, undesignedly, for which latter he was very sorry.

He gave £3 10s to five men who were to follow the cart as mouners, with hatbands and gloves to them and several others.

Jumping off the ladder was an unusual way to do it. Maybe he had some cunning plan. It made for a speedier death - but required courage.
