aside from "tacky and tasteless" I don't recall calling them anything prior to the disco craze - but you are right, they were around.

They were around in the fifties, long before disco. Similar to "gazing balls" in Victorian gardens.

In the 50's, we called 'em "mirror balls". As I recall we had two at my Sr. Prom. going in opposite directions. Vertigo city!

I believe in mirrorballs... (where are you from, you sexy thing?!)!!

Call a spade a spade, and a mirrorball a mirrorball. At least, in the trade that's what we've always called 'em...

Thanks, Bern. I hadn't thought about that song for nearly 20 years.

I've never had mirror balls, but then again I've never polished them.

Me mum says she can't recall, but she remembers them from her college days -- that'd be the mid-'30s. So they've been around a while.

A sphere, constructed of pliable material with a layer of adhesive to which small pieces of mirror should be attached.Thats what we used to call them in the good ol days.

I thought it described a medical condition caused from the constant friction of tight underpants putting a shine on things

I always heard them referred to as "glitter balls" — and it was rarely said with any affection.

Katlaughing, you are one sick puppy!!!

... Thousands of dollars was poured into research to digitize human memory. The SPS cult figureheads figured that the memories of the Seventies were so great, that they needed to be shared with the future world. Tragically, several young SPS members who believed so strongly in their Society's message died in the experiments to transfer brain memories onto a 5 inch floppy disk. These brave people underwent brain surgery to put live electrical conduits directly into their brain. The doctors working struggled to find a safe voltage, as volunteer after volunteer died before their very eyes.

... Over fifteen of our fellow SPS members have died at the hands of our memory experiments in the past three and a half years. People always ask me, 'Don, is it worth it? Is it worth that some of us should perish so the Seventies will live forever?'. My answer has been, and always will be, a resounding 'Yes!'

Donald Brucker, President of the Seventies Preservation Society, Speech March 29, 1984.
