Folkie Theme Nights

Subject: Folkie Theme Nights From: Mikey joe Date: 30 Jan 01 - 11:26 AM Can anyone think of a good theme for folk sessions. Sometimes we try to narrow down stuff by singing songs on a particular topic, For example songs that have to do with travelling, or alphabet nights where first song begins with A and so on. I'm looking for original ideas but abviously with enough materials to cover a 2 1/2 hour set. Cheers Mj |

Serious suggestion - We tried a singers session where the singer nominated the next singer and, possibly, song. Worked very well but you realy find out who your friends are! Or how about a fancy dress night where everyone turns up as a character from one of their songs? Let us know what you come up with and, better still, what works best - I am always one to learn from others mistakes;-) Cheers DtG |

How's THAT for a weak connection! LOL!! |

Last week we had a "body count" at our club but some one cheated with "Shoals of Herring" and claimed ten million fishes. We should have specified that the bodies must have legs! Another good one was "William and Nancy" night where points were scored for those names cropping up in songs. Many names were changed to incriminate the innocent! |

(Really original hey) We had songs about politicians, parodies, gold rushes, bushrangers (well we are in Oz), sailors, the weather, life in the city, you name it we probably had it. Sometimes the song's connection to the theme was a bit tenuous but that was all part of the fun. Cheers JennieG |

One theme that went over well (or at least garnered a fair amount of attention) was the "Dead Folksingers Society" night where I featured songs written by the likes of Phil Ochs, Bob Gibson, Steve Goodman, John Denver, Woody, et al. |
