Subject: Folkie Theme Nights From: Mikey joe Date: 30 Jan 01 - 11:26 AM Can anyone think of a good theme for folk sessions. Sometimes we try to narrow down stuff by singing songs on a particular topic, For example songs that have to do with travelling, or alphabet nights where first song begins with A and so on. I'm looking for original ideas but abviously with enough materials to cover a 2 1/2 hour set. Cheers Mj |

Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: Dave the Gnome Date: 30 Jan 01 - 11:50 AM Big guitars and piano accordians could save a lot of embarrasment. Pity the poor tin whistle player! Serious suggestion - We tried a singers session where the singer nominated the next singer and, possibly, song. Worked very well but you realy find out who your friends are! Or how about a fancy dress night where everyone turns up as a character from one of their songs? Let us know what you come up with and, better still, what works best - I am always one to learn from others mistakes;-) Cheers DtG |

Who Wrote That Night Serious Questions Night Bushwackers' Night (Robbers and thieves, not politicos...) Political Humor (Humour?) Night etc. Oh, and Murder Songs Night might be fun...as long as nobody starts "acting out." Sarah |
Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: Clinton Hammond Date: 30 Jan 01 - 12:22 PM We do a bit in one of our sets... a collection of songs called The Ugly Guy Set... starts with Red River Rising by James Keelaghan, into You ain't Goin' Nowhere by Dylan, then Me And Bobby Mcgee by Kris Kristoffersson, then Mary Ellen Carter and Barrettes by Stan Rogers... How's THAT for a weak connection! LOL!! |
Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: GUEST,Jaze Date: 30 Jan 01 - 01:50 PM Train songs would probably be good for a couple of sessions. Songs about fallen women/men-hookers and such. Songs about parents/or children. |
Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: Morticia Date: 30 Jan 01 - 01:52 PM if you've got a well-established group, you could try everyone do one of someones else's songs.....in the manner of that person,it's a hoot! Also transvestite songs (where the maid is actually a man, or a very few the other way round), dress appropriately..... |

Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: GUEST,sooze (at work) Date: 31 Jan 01 - 03:32 AM I like the idea of "songs you haven't sung before". We must give that one a go. Last week we had a "body count" at our club but some one cheated with "Shoals of Herring" and claimed ten million fishes. We should have specified that the bodies must have legs! Another good one was "William and Nancy" night where points were scored for those names cropping up in songs. Many names were changed to incriminate the innocent! |
Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: Dave the Gnome Date: 31 Jan 01 - 04:52 AM Only songs off the Mudcat night? Suck 'em all night (So come all you brisk young fellows..) Timmy night (To me, blow the man down bullies...) Getting silly enough yet??? |
Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: JennieG Date: 31 Jan 01 - 05:04 AM Years ago my folk club used to run monthly theme nights - they were called "Folk-us Nights"! (Really original hey) We had songs about politicians, parodies, gold rushes, bushrangers (well we are in Oz), sailors, the weather, life in the city, you name it we probably had it. Sometimes the song's connection to the theme was a bit tenuous but that was all part of the fun. Cheers JennieG |
Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: English Jon Date: 31 Jan 01 - 05:06 AM Theres an awful lot of songs that have, over the years, gained and lost so many verses that they no longer have any sort of logical plot (at least, not that can be discerned without some degree of research) Therefore, I suggest: "Songs that don't really mean anything" night. Jon |
Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: bill\sables Date: 31 Jan 01 - 06:42 AM How about a night or two singing songs that all have the tune "Come all you Tramps and Hawkers" I must have heard dozens of them. Bill |
Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: GUEST,Mikey joe Date: 31 Jan 01 - 06:44 AM Songs that deal with vices???? Gambling, drink, drugs, prostitution. Bopund to be something there that speaks to someone |
Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 31 Jan 01 - 06:52 AM You suggested "travel" in the first thread. You could do a whole evening of "railway" songs: building them, travelling on them, lovers leaving on them, crashing them. (I suggested this to another thread but the skiffle repertoire has lots of train references!)> Or Travellers: Rom, hobos, tramps, hawkers, etc. RtS(But what do I know from folk?) |
Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: mkebenn Date: 31 Jan 01 - 07:36 AM How about "battle" night, war on land or sea. I could do a couple of sets. Or, "the LAST song you'd expect me to sing night" Mike |
Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 31 Jan 01 - 08:03 AM Songs that deal with vices???? Gambling, drink, drugs, prostitution. You could include singing and revelry in there. |

Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: Bert Date: 31 Jan 01 - 04:46 PM Buck County Folksong Society has many theme nights. Here's some past meetings. |
Subject: RE: Folkie Theme Nights From: ray bucknell Date: 31 Jan 01 - 08:04 PM I run some very amateur sing alongs periodically - mostly attended by people with very little knowledge of folk music or the folk process. One theme that went over well (or at least garnered a fair amount of attention) was the "Dead Folksingers Society" night where I featured songs written by the likes of Phil Ochs, Bob Gibson, Steve Goodman, John Denver, Woody, et al. |
