Subject: Mother take me in your arms and hold me
From: Don Firth

This morning on NPR radio (2/2/01) Bob Edward interviewed a man (last name Moore) from the Appalachians of Kentucky. He talked about a song whose umpteenth verse started, "Mother, take me in your arms and hold me tight." It was sung by a man, unaccompanied. Apparently it had many verses. I have tried the NPR listings, but came up with something different about Appalachia. What I want to know is who was singing. Wouldn't mind perusing the remainder of the words.

I heard that too! Made me cry. I don't know the song but the singer was definitely Ricky Skaggs. You might try searching for his website - it will probably have discography information, etc. on it.

I heard it and coming on the heels of Ivan B's concert last night, it made me cry, too. They usually don't have the info from that day up until the next, so I wuld suspect tomorrow we could find a bit more info at NPR's site.

It was beautiful. Wonder if Jean Ritchie knows it; she's on here now as kytrad, you might send her a PM, if she doen't see this thread by some chance.

My apologies. I thought I had posted the complete Skaggs text, not merely a pointer. I will do so later today. Have a listen to Holcomb's performance on 'High Lonesome Sound'.

I have posted the complete text of the Skaggs recording into my original 'Little Bessie' thread. This is to keep it all together and not incur the wrath of our father Joebro, as Spaw delights in calling him.

Click here for longer version of Little Bessie

Cheers, Stewie.
