Subject: Looking for versions of a song that goes
From: Clinton Hammond
Date: 03 Feb 01 - 02:35 PM

"On the first day of March in the year '93
The first recreation that was in this country
The kings country gentelmen, o'er hills, dales, and rock
Rove'd out most joyfully in search of the fox"

chorus
"Tally ho hounds away Tally ho hounds away
Tally ho hounds away me boys, away hounds away"

Anyone familliar with bands that have recorded this song at'll?

;-)

The Irish Ramblers recorded it on 'Patriot Game' Elektra LP ELK-249. They noted: 'The words and music are found in Dr Joyce's 'Ancient Irish Music'. The words, as here, sometimes acquire a local colouring'.

There is a Northumbrian hunting song "College Valley Hunt" with a similar chorus
Tally Ho hark away
Tally Ho hark away
Sucess to the College Valley hounds
Oh hark hark away
Bill

Sweeney's Men recorded it. Reissued on a 4-CD set called Irish Folk Favourites (an old LP each from The Dubliners, Kilfenora Ceili Band, Sweeney's Men, Grehan Sisters, Finbar & Eddie Furey, and Mick Moloney)

Snuffy, I had forgotten Sweeney's Men did it. Both their albums - 'Sweeney's Men' and 'Tracks of Sweeney's Men' - have been reissued on a single CD with a previously unissued track, 'Old Woman in Cotton' - Essential/Castle ESM CD 435. 'Old Woman' is a great song which I first heard on a album by The Peelers.

Too difficult for me, but if you are not pressed for time, I'd send you a tape with Sweeney's men singing. PM me if you are interested.

That's amazingly quick.

A night of pints? If that's not a good reason to come to Canada...

The first line of this song goes like this: "I could not sleep at all last night!"

it's a 10-20 year old song. Thanks for helping out.
