Subject: RE: Lyr: Close Unto Fulbeck in Lincolnshire From: Backwoodsman Date: 24 Nov 23 - 01:18 AM ”I heard it on a CD by a Brit names Connolly, who might have written Fiddler's Green, but was definitely from that part of the UK” John Connolly, of the old fishing-town of Grimsby, North Lincolnshire, is indeed the writer of ‘Fiddler’s Green’ and co-writer of ‘Byard’s Leap’ with Bill Meek (who sadly passed away recently - RIP). John is very much a local legend, a great writer and performer, a very funny guy, and an all-round nice fella. |
Subject: RE: Lyr: Close Unto Fulbeck in Lincolnshire From: GUEST,RE Anderson, Chicago, IL, USA Date: 23 Nov 23 - 11:22 PM THIS IS GREAT! I just logged on trying to find the two lines I've been missing and found some answers. Here's my best knowledge of the songs, including my two missing lines: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Close unto Fulbeck in Lincolnshire There lived a woman who, as I did hear, Who being one of the Devil’s wicked band Laid a curse on houses, cattle and land And seeing ruins around them lie The people vowed that the witch must die And every night on their knees did loudly call "May the Good Lord soon deliver us all" Til there came riding a soldier bold And soon the story was quickly told Black Jim his name and a man of noble deed And now Bayard was the name of his steed “.….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .…..? I pray you where does this demon dwell?” He clapped his spurs into Bayard’s gallant side, And the great way to the witch he did ride. “Come out, come out, oh you hell born dame Come out!”, he cried, “in the good Lords name The Devil’s curse shall be taken from this land By the broad sword that do shine in me hand” Then like a demon she did appear Crying “Who dare come so boldly here?” With Satan’s curses the fields and meadows rang And at Bayard like a tiger she sprang Her cruel claws from her fingers flashed, And Bayard’s blood on the ground was splashed But like a winged horse he gave a mighty bound And the old hag she was dashed to the ground. And so the news through all England sped, “Rejoice, rejoice for the witch is dead! But gallant Bayard upon the green grass lay With his life blood quickly flashing away. Close unto Fulbeck in Lincolnshire, .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .….. .…..? But Christian men to this day the memory keep, Gallant Bayard and the tale of his leap. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< CAN ANYONE FINISH IT FOR US / ME? (I heard it on a CD by a Brit names Connolly, who might have written Fiddler's Green, but was definitely from that part of the UK). Thank you!! RE Anderson, Chicago, IL, USA |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: 'Close Unto Fulbeck in Lincol From: Sorcha Date: 03 Feb 01 - 11:09 PM Bayard the Steed (horse) figures greatly in the tales of Charlemange.......he was Rinaldo's horse, and of normal sized, except that his back could elongate to accomodate several riders. I sugggest that you search Charlemange, or the Chanson de Roland (Song of Roland)particularly the siege of Albracca, start here. I did not find these exact lyrics anywhere, but they could be SCA (medieval re enactors) lyrics......don't know for sure. |
