I thought Jet Pilot was the shortest, but I haven't timed it or checked. Idiot Wind hits a lot of those categories for me as its angry, sarcastic, even a bit of a song of unrequited love.......... Forever Young ties with Love Minus Zero in the love department. Too many other choices though........ Humor....I lean a bit towards Bob's 115th Dream or Talkin' WW III. Most memorable??? That's tough............There are a couple that are incredibly beautiful and hold a very special place within me. Bob Dylan's Dream and Lay Down Your Weary Tune are both very special to me. But I thought it would be interesting to see what people would say. Matt - Nice picks! Pretty damn good for a recent convert to Dylan. I'm impressed, though I don't agree with your rating of "Sad-Eyed Lady"...I think it's very beautiful and full of remarkable poetic images. It was about Sarah Dylan, apparently, though Joan Baez apparently thought it was about her (at one time she did, anyway). I wouldn't be surprised if it was about both of them in some degree or another, as well as about Bob himself. You are dead right about "Suze (The Cough Song)"...that, I believe, is the shortest...if you could call it a song at all. I think the longest is...SURPRISE!...not "Sad-Eyed Lady", but "Highlands" (off the album "Time Out of Mind"). Then too, it might be "Brownsville Girl", but I still think it's "Highlands". My vote for least comprehensible is "Yea, Heavy, and a Bottle Of Bread". Hard to say what the hell it's about. "Golden Loom" is an excellent choice for most mystical. My vote for that one might be "Angelina" or even "Jokerman", but it's a tough choice to be sure. - LH |

I love that CD, but I don't often have the patience to Listen to Highlands in it's entirety. Sad Eyed Lady although long holds my attention until the end. I think it's a wonderful song.

Johnny also likes any song with violent death in it for some reason, which is how he got the nickname. He enjoys making bizarre and extremely right wing statements in front of the rest of us folkies, who are mostly liberal to left leaning. Not to worry...he still loves Dylan, so there's hope for him! Dylan's capacity for humour in his song lyrics has often been underrated, and the "collateral" line is a fine example of that. How about in "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" when he remarks sarcastically..."I saw you makin' love to him...you forgot to close the garage door. You may think he loves you for your money, but I know what he really loves you for...it's your brand new leopard skin pillbox hat!" Talk about a wicked putdown! He has a deadly way with words. (and it's pretty good too). However, I still suspect that "Oh Sister" was about Sarah. On the other hand, it could be about both Sarah and Joan! With Bob, you never know, cos he's good at "keeping things vague" (now who is that quote from?...). Joan clearly thought that "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" was written for her (and some of the lyrics would certainly suggest it..."with your matchbook songs and your gypsy hymns"), but it seems that it was for Sarah, according to Bob.
