Subject: Lyrics to Werewolf?
From: Barry Finn
Date: 09 Oct 97 - 10:23 PM

I heard this song at a party last weekend (4 states away), & in a recent thread the name of Dransfield came up & I think that's who the singer said recorded it durning the 70's. The song is about the sad, lonely existence of a werewolf who preys on young maidens on the mountain (somewhat similar to Rynadine). Can anyone supply the words & where I can find the tune & if there is anything else avaible by this Dransfield & who are they/she/he? Thanks Barry

Do you remember any lyrics from the song?

Something to jog the memory.

Barry, This may or may not be the song you're looking for. It was written (I think) by Michael Hurley.

THE WEREWOLF

Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf comes stepping along
He don't even break the branches where he's been gone
You can hear his long holler from way 'cross the moor
That's the holler of the werewolf when he's feellin poor

He goes out in the evening when the bats are on wing
And he kills some young maid before the first scene
Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf have sympathy
Cause the werewolf might be someone just like you or me

Once I saw him in the moonlight when the bats were aflyin
All alone I saw the werewolf and the werewolf was cryin
Crying nobody, nobody, nobody knows
How much I love the maid as I tear off here clothes
Crying nobody, nobody, nobody knows my pain
When I see that its risen, the full moon again

Oh Igor he said its this little flute that I play
But I never play my song by the light of day
(spoken: When you do play, what do you play?)
Eeeee Eeeee Eeeee …
Eeeee Eeeee Eeeee …

Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf comes stepping along
He don't even break the branches where he's been gone
Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf comes travelin along
He don't even crush the leaves where he's been gone

There's also the silly one on the Firebird(?) tape SNOW MAGIC, about a poor werewolf who's vegetarian, allergic to fur, easily embarrassed, and so on. The chorus goes something like:

Hunt, run, howl at the full moon;
I can't get it right. I don't know why I try;
Soon the moon will be rising;
O pity a poor werewolf.

But somehow this sounds a little sillier than you were looking for...

Barry, the Dransfield brothers, Robin and Barry, are British folk-revival musicians who started recording in the 70's. Barry Dransfield is a great fiddle and cello player who has also recorded several solo albums without his brother. The Werewolf is one of their written songs, and is on a recently released CD compilation of their work on the Free Reed label, called "Up to Now". It's a mix of acoustic and British folk-rock stuff; I really like it, but I also love Fairport and The Albion Band. I got the CD from Wally Macnow at Camsco, here's his listing of the album and the tracks on it: camsco
and here's Free Reed Records more detailed description of it:Free Reed

I'll check the album when I get home and see if they have the lyrics to The Werewolf written out; I don't think they did, though...

I also bought one of Barry's (the multiplicity of Barrys is confusing, Barry) solo albums, The Wings of the Sphinx, on Rhiannon Records,RHYD 5010, released 1996; I got it as an expensive British import at our local folk store, House of Musical Traditions. It's mostly acoustic, and entirely fantastic (I'm just a little enthusiastic here).

By the way, are you part of Finn and Haddie? Will you be at the NOMAD festival in Newtown, CT in November? My husband and I are going up to do a few workshops there; we're also applying for NEFFA in the spring, so hope we can say hi in person some time...

Thanks Earl for the words, it's the one & the same, I'll be trying for the tune now. LaMarca, thanks for info & direction, I think I'll go see Wally. Yes, I'm the Finn in Finn & Haddie. I may end up at Nomad, we'll also be at NEFFA again, if I can get this years early application out by the 20th. Get in touch, the applications for NEFFA are due this month. Barry Finn

Thanks to all for the Werewolf info, does anyone know about the tune, if it's traditional or if written by the Dransfields. Barry

I believe the lyrics posted by Earl above were indeed written by Michael Hurley and they are the same ones (more or less) that Robin and Barry Dransfield recorded under the title THE WEREWOLF. It's on their 2-CD compilation "Up to Now" Free Reed #18, 1997.

Michael Hurley sings it under the title THE WEREWOLF SONG on his album "First Songs," Folk Era LP #3581, 1975 (which was also released as a cassette by Smithsonian Folkways); and on "Blueberry Wine: The First Songs of Michael Hurley," Locust CD #10, 2002. He also sings it under the title THE WEREWOLF on "Armchairboogie," Warner Brothers LP #1915, 1971; and on "Wolfways," Koch International CD #7910, 1995.

Cat Power sings it on "You Are Free," Matador CD ole-427, 2003.

Lauren Sheehan sings it on "Some Old Lonesome Day."

Here are some additional lyrics found at http://www.lyricsfind.com/c/cat-power/unknown-album/the-werewolf-song.php :

When I see that moon moving through the clouds in the sky,
I get a crazy feeling and I wonder why.

For the werewolf have pity, not fear, and not hate,
'Cause the werewolf might be someone that you've known of late.

Hi Barry,
The werewolf is one of my favorite songs.
Here are the lyrics that I got from The Dransfields, written by Micael Hurley

THE WEREWOLF

Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf comes stepping along
He don't even break the branches where he's been gone

You can hear his long holler from way 'cross the moor
That's the holler of the werewolf when he's feellin poor

He goes out in the evening when the bats are on wing
And he kills some young maid before the birds do sing

Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf have sympathy
Cause the werewolf might be someone just like you or me

Once I saw him in the moonlight when the bats were aflyin
All alone I saw the werewolf and the werewolf was cryin

Crying nobody, nobody, nobody knows
How much I love the maid as I tear off here clothes

Crying nobody, nobody, nobody knows my pain
When I see that its risen, the full moon again

When I see that moon moving, through the clouds in the sky
I get a crazy feeling, and I wonder why.

Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf comes stepping along
He don't even break the branches where he's been gone

If you still need the tune, give me a call and I'll sing it for you.
Hugs
Alison K

'Armchair Boogie', Hurley's first album, was on Jesse Colin Young's Racoon label, a Warners subsidiary. It was Racoon 6 and followed a year later by 'Hi Fi Snock Uptown', Racoon 14. The Racoon 6 also carries the WS1915 Warners number indicated above by Jim, but I can't find any Warners number on the sleeve of Racoon 14. Racoon 6 also has an insert Hurley comic 'Boone and Jocko in the Barren Choking Land'.

Great tune!
The lyrics and chords of this and several other Snock songs have been submitted by fans and posted in the 'Discussion' section of Hurley's Facebook group -
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10596896659&v=app_2373072738

Still not sure who wrote it - thanks, Mudcatters! - but
I do it as written there -- Am - G - Dm - Am over and over ...

Peter Stampfel also covers it... on 'Goobers - A Collection Of Kids Songs,' 1993.

Well I went online to look for the lyrics to this song (which I have sung before but I needed a refresher) and was so moved to see our dear friend Barry Finn had requested it many moons ago...just like Barry to discover the great songs.

I had a recording of this on a great compilation CD and shared it with my friend Hannah Sanders who loved it and did a spooky rendition for one of her albums.

all the best to everyone and Happy Halloween!
