My second cry for help tonight..

I'm not sure if the title I give is the correct one and the only snippet of lyrics I have are as follows:-

Just a soldier and his bride
They were sitting side by side
Just a soldier returning home from the war

Again many thanks for any help you can give

Mick

Mick, I have not found any lyrics per se, but I think what you are looking for might be The Soldier and His Bride, music by Henry Russell, lyrics by George Pope Morris. There is a sound file on this page, but no lyrics. You have to scroll down to the 1842 song listings, about 1/4 of the way down the page. Sorry I couldn't find more........

There's a copy at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music: The Soldier and His Bride, but it doesn't look as if it's the right song, unfortunately.

Hi Sorcha
Afraid it's not the Russel/Pope composition.. now I can't remember where I found the lyrics for that.. perhaps I ought to post them here...

I'll check out the Levy offering Malcolm..

Thanks for your input..
Mick

Hi there, here are the lyrics to the song, A Soldier and his Bride:
"could this be the one you are looking for?"

Soldier & His Bride

They were seated side by side
Just a Soldier and his Bride
A Soldier just returning from the war
He'd been gone away for years
From the home he loved so dear
Fighting for his King and Country cause

But now he has returned
And his loving heart do yearn
For his loving Wife lay dying on her bed
As he pressed her to his heart
Each moment for to part
And these are the loving words he said

Oh darling live till morn
Let me see the daylight dawn
Let me gaze into your beauty once again
For I wish I had been slang
where from England I first came
to meet you and to part with you again

With their loving hands in'twine
They've been talking of the time
When he brought her to the church to be his bride
where they found they would never part
from each fond and loving heart
It was only death alone, could them devide

Now seldon vows are broken
and the Soldier he is gone
He's gone across the ocean for to fight
In his eyes there is a tear
of sorrow, not of fear
for his loving wife died in his arms that day

Just wondering if you ever found the song lyrics or music to this song?? I remember my grandmother singing it in the 1950's.
