I've been searching the country databases for lyrics to Loretta's songs, but everywhere I go, it's the same four or five songs. Does anyone know of a good place to look? Thanks

Seth from China

Hi, Seth - the best overall Country lyrics database is Cowpie - Click here for their Loretta Lynn collection, which is probably the same five songs you found elsewhere (and the other sites probably got their lyrics from Cowpie. There's a site called http://www.lorettalynn.com, but I don't know if they have lyrics. It there are specific songs you're looking for, let us know. We have some real experts who can find just about anything you might need.
You may also be able to get something out of thisGoogle Search (click) I've set up for you.

Subject: Happy Birthday Loretta Lynn
From: Felipa
Date: 14 Apr 22 - 06:00 PM

I was listening tonight to BBC radio 2 country music show, so I know that 14 April 2022 is LORETTA LYNN'S NINETIETH BIRTHDAY
She only retired from touring five years ago.

her 2022 "Birthday Bash" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbGxu5ooKdY was held earlier this week apparently.

Hey, I'm surprised at this song from 1972:

THE PILL
Songwriters: Don McHan / Loretta Lynn / T.D. Bayless

You wined me and dined me
When I was your girl
Promised if I'd be your wife
You'd show me the world
But all I've seen of this old world
Is a bed and a doctor bill
I'm tearin' down your brooder house
'Cause now I've got the pill

All these years I've stayed at home
While you had all your fun
And every year that's gone by
Another baby's come
There's a gonna be some changes made
Right here on nursery hill
You've set this chicken your last time
'Cause now I've got the pill

This old maternity dress I've got
Is goin' in the garbage
The clothes I'm wearin' from now on
Won't take up so much yardage
Miniskirts, hot pants and a few little fancy frills
Yeah I'm makin' up for all those years
Since I've got the pill

I'm tired of all your crowin'
How you and your hens play
While holdin' a couple in my arms
Another's on the way
This chicken's done tore up her nest
And I'm ready to make a deal
And ya can't afford to turn it down
'Cause you know I've got the pill

This incubator is overused
Because you've kept it filled
The feelin' good comes easy now
Since I've got the pill
It's gettin' dark it's roostin' time
Tonight's too good to be real
Oh, but daddy don't you worry none
'Cause mama's got the pill
Oh, daddy don't you worry none
'Cause mama's got the pill

There were some lyrics to Loretta Lynn songs at Cowpie, http://www.roughstock.com/cowpie/songs/songs.html/l/lynn_loretta
There gone now, so I got what I could find in an archive of the Cowpie Website.

I just copy-pasted these from the Cowpie archive, so I won't guarantee the accuracy of the lyrics. I spend my time on folk music, not commercial stuff. Many of these songs were transcribed by my friend Gene Graham, and his work is quite accurate.

COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER
Words and music by Loretta Lynn

[D] Well, I was born a [G] coal miner's [D] daughter
In a cabin on a [E] hill in Butcher [A7] Holler
We were [D] poor, but we had love
That's the [G] one thing that daddy made [D] sure of
He shoveled coal to [A7] make a poor man's [D] dollar.

My daddy worked all night in the Vanleer coal mine
All day long in the field a-hoin' corn
Mommie rocked the babies at night
And read the Bible by the coal-oil light
And ever'thing would start all over come break of morn'.

Change to Eb:
Daddy loved and raised eight kids on a miner's pay
Mommie scrubbed our clothes on a washboard ever' day
Why, I've seen her fingers bleed
To complain there was no need
She'd smile in Mommie's understanding way.

In the summertime we didn't have shoes to wear
But in the wintertime we'd all get a brand new pair
>From a mail order catalog
Money made from sellin' a hog
Daddy always managed to get the money somewhere.

Change to E:
Yeah!, I'm proud to be a coal miner's daughter
I remember well - the well where I drew water
The work we done was hard
At night we'd sleep 'cause we were tired
I never thought of ever leaving Butcher Holler.

Well, a lot of things have changed since way back then
And it's so good to be back home again
Not much left but the floor
Nothing lives here anymore
Except the mem'ries of a coal miner's daughter.

HONKY TONK GIRL
Words and music by Loretta Lynn

[D] bridge to:
[G] Ever since you left me I've done [D] nothing but wrong
[A7] Many nights I've [G] laid awake and [D] cried

CHORUS
So [A7] turn that [G] Jukebox way up [D] high

[G] I just can't make a right with [D] all of my wrongs
[A7] Ev'ry ev'ning of my [G] life seems so [D] long
[G] I'm sorry and ashamed for [D] all these things you see
But [A7] losin' him has [G] made a fool of [D] me.

So [A7] fill my [G] glass up to the [D] brim
To [A7] lose my [G] mem-o-ry of [D] him
I've [G] lost ev'rything in this [D] world
And now I'm a [A7] honky tonk [D] girl.

-------------------------------------------

Note. Extra Verse from a different version.

All he ever gave me was a reason to go bad
And it's not hard to see just what I am
I'm ashamed and I'm sorry for everything you see
But losing him has made a fool of me.

You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man,
Performed by Loretta Lynn
Austin City Limits, February 10, 1983

[D]You've come to tell me something
You [G] think I ought to know
[A]He don't love me anymore and it's time for me to go.[D]
You say you're gonna take him
But I [G]don't believe you can
Cause you ain't woman e-[A]nough to take my man[D]

Chorus
[A]Women like you are a dime a dozen
You can [D]buy 'em anywhere
For you to [E]get to him, I'd have to move over
And I'm [A]gonna stand right here.
It'll be[D] over my dead body, so [G]get out while you can.
Cause you ain't woman e-[A]nough to take my man.[D]

Sometimes a man's caught lookin'
At things that he don't need
He took a second look at you
But he's in love with me
I don't know where that leaves you
But I know where I stand
And you aint woman enough to take my man

Chorus

Cause you ain't woman enough to take my man.

He Stopped Lovin' Her Today, Lucille, and Jolene are expertly written country songs. The ability to paint pictures with few words is a gift that is evidenced by the above lyrics of Loretta.

I give credit to A.P. Carter and Woody Guthrie for this ability. Country music recycles melodies from earlier traditional sources and they are the vehicles for new forms of basic lyrics found in Country. Definitely part of a "folk process".

funny you should mention Jolene, Frank Hamilton. When I saw the lyrics of "You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man", I thought "that's a better song than Jolene!" I do like the melody of Jolene, however, and there is nothing special about the melody of the Loretta Lynn song,"You ain't woman enough ..."
