We (Mississippi) use it for everything! Some rub it on their body to treat "rhumatiz". Some use it to relieve psoriasis (Did I spel that rite?)

Other than its chief purposes, what do you, or others you know, use it for?

I spent a week trying to fix a car door lock...had just about every bit of the door and linkages off and on more times than I care to remember....Then after giving up...My wife gave it a shot of WD and it worked immediately....

Problem is that now no matter what goes wrong in the house and environs it gets WD'd.....wanna know what that stuff does to Cdrom's and mobile phones.......!

Up here in the Pacific Northwest it's used to catch steelhead (Yes, they DO really exist). We spray it on our bait, throw it in the river, and HOLD ON! REALLY, I'm not making this up! True, it's really true ... I couldn't invent a story like this if I had too. I mean if I made this up, no body would believe me ... right?

good for spraying on jellyfish stings....... honest hubby got badly stung by a blue bottle (portuguese man of war).... stopped at the sop to get vinegar.. and was told WD40 worked better.. and it did.. instantly...........

My mother insisted that we put WD-40 on her yard every spring to kill the cut worms, etc. She alos insisted that she put 2-4-D on her arthritis.......we didn't argue with her, we just put the 2-4-D on the yard, and kept getting her WD 40 for the house......she was probably the only person in the world who was convinced that WD 40 killed cut worms. Whether or not it does, I have no idea.

Used everwhere on fishing equipment and boat. And Deckman, we have steelhead clones in the Great Lakes, and I hear they go for this also, but I haven't tried{bull headed? old fashioned? stupid?} Mike

Shadetree mechanics know: if you've got a cracked distributor cap that's allowed some moisture to seep in, you can spray WD-40 on the insides of the cap, and she'll dry 'er out enough to get 'er going.

When your "Fast-Fret" string cleaner has shrivelled up and dried, you can revitalize it with a quick shot of WD-40. Or you can simply spray it on a rag and clean your guitar strings with it.

It works real well for cleaning gooey stuff (like sticker glue residue) off instruments and cases without harming the finish.

Found another interesting use on one of those "pyromaniacs anonymous" pages - may be an urban legend...

Current WD-40 canisters have a tube coming out of the can, which you plug into the nozzle bit. But old WD-40 canisters apparently used to have a concave top bit with an inset rubber valve, then there was a tube on the nozzle which you pushed into this valve.

Someone discovered an alternative use for this. Since the propellant was quite flammable, you squirted a large quantity into the lid, poured this into the concave bit, lit it, and ran like hell. The propellant would burn, and after a little while (long enough to reach a safe distance!) the rubber valve would melt. The flaming propellant would then drop into the canister and ignite the rest of the can, so you'd get a monster Roman candle effect.

But now you can't do it, cos the can isn't the same. And most spray-cans don't use flammable propellant any more either, so you can't even do the "dragon's-breath" effect. Boring...

Hey jeepman, and all you others who didn't notice, it ain't just the wimmin using Pam!

But the last idea, here, from Grab, reminds me of burning golf balls as a kid, you can't do that anymore either. Make a little bonfire, place golf ball in center, BACK AWAY. Soon the outer shell will melt in one spot, enough to let (what used to be) a big giant rubber band wound very very very tightly inside the ball come shooting out. Usually it would wait till you'd come creeping back, wondering if it would ever blow. Well, what really happens is that the golf ball comes shooting out of the fire, in some random direction, and then spins around like a headless chicken for a while till all the pressure is off the rubber insides. No one even got their glasses broken, but that thing could really take off.

We used to do the "dragon's breath" trick all the time in college, and it burned beautifully. That was a few years ago, though. Used to set spraycan deodorant on fire too.

I've heard of WD being used to spray bait in the UK. "Slim" Guitarist with "the hamsters" uses cans of it to play his fast ZZT and Hendrix licks. One guitar mag said it wasn't good for fretboards. It keeps the chain on your bike nice and clean and removes lots of muck. Good for frozen locks and rusty padlocks. It's excellent stuff, never tried drinking it though-don't advise you do either.

When you get tird of misplacing that tiny tube that comes with the can try this trick. Drill a small hole all of the way through the red cap .. slightly off center .. and stick the tube through the hole for safe keeping.

I remember once, a hundred years ago, when I was a carpenter at the Univ. of Washington, in Seattle. I was trying to repair a large (are there any other kind at a University?) exit door. I opened a new can of WD40, and sprayed it on a the panic hardware latch. The damned thing would'nt shut off. I mean it just sprayed and sprayed and sprayed. Have you got ANY idea just how much slippery stuff is in one of those cans? I had to close off the exit ... both ways. I had to get helpers with lots of cloth rags, and we wiped and mopped for hours. That was over ten years ago, and I'll bet that place is still slippery ... but I'll bet the door works!

I think not.

Cod fisherman use WD-40 to juice up their jigs when they are jigging for Cod on excursion boats. Can't use it on American waterways tho, petro distillates leave a sheen on the water and thats illegal with a hefty fine.

Incidentally, there's a Duct Tape website. They experimented and found that whilst duct tape could be used to fix damn near everything, the one thing it didn't do well was heating ducts. :-)

My nomination for indispensible (-able?) stuff is JB-Weld. It sticks as well as Araldite but doesn't run like Araldite, and you can wash it off your hands with soap and water afterwards.

Back to WD-40, I prefer oil. Put a bit of oil on the sticky key, run it in and out of the lock a few times, and that loosens the tumblers up quite nicely.

WD40 works to relieve arthritis pain in my hands and knees.

And, it is a wonderful "flying stinger" killer. Kills wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets pretty quickly. Clogs up the little "air" ducts on their little sides. Not too effective if you have a whole swarm of yellow jackets after you, but, then, what is?

Grab, "white plastic pail"==deli bucket, dry wall mud bucket, etc. 5 gallon white plastic bucket you can do lots of neat stuff with when empty. Dog poop pail, weed pail, turn em upside down and you got side tables and footstools for camping, great for fire starter tinder, etc. Really super for use in water fights, too!

White plastic buckets are also very handy for making sauerkraut in and for parts of the process of tanning hides. I recommend using the deli variety for any types of food stuff but any old plastic bucket works well with hides.

lol... my knowledge of my car extents to... if it doesn't work.. spray wd40 on EVERTHING... it's bound to hit the right spot eventually...

I used to have 2 rather old rickety cars when I was a teenager... One old Metro - dear thing called Bessie... who used to break down 3 times a week - and revive after a good dousing in WD40... had to get rid of her though, when I found out she only had one bolt holding the engine in... (something to do with me putting it on two wheels going round a round about too fast) and the poor thing had every kind of rust... and problem going...

There is a huge difference between a plastic bucket and other types of buckets. First being that the plastic variety are always free or at the most about 50 cents. Second is that other buckets are all designed with specific purposed in mind and NEVER last as long as the plastic variety. Third is that I would NEVER make sauerkraut in a galvanized bucket and certainly wouldn't place one of my valuable hides in something I couldn't trust to take care of the job.

Squirt a little inside the 'works' of the control, rotate (or slide) it a few times, and it will magically stop crackling!

Much better than carbon tetrachloride!

Bread crates were very popular here for a while about 20/30 years ago, a place that has been taken over by the Sainsburys Basket - a plastic shopping basket that has no holes in it, but a sturdy handle. Seen these in the strangest of places.... mostly at the zoo, used as food carrier and plaything...

The bucket thing though, that's universal. Everywhere you go you can find a 5gallon plastic bucket being used for something totally unlike the label - 5 gall cooking oil buckets used for mixing concrete in, plaster buckets used to keep beer and ice in....

Now that we have the larger 'wheelie bins' there are scores of plastic dustbins out there with alternative lives.....

WD40 can replace several nasty smelling bottles and keep firearms clean and lubricated. Silikroil is a similar product and works well on rusty screws and whatnot.
