Subject: So, Tell me about your kids, pets, etc.
From: Pseudolus
Date: 07 Feb 01 - 10:39 AM

Every now and then I'm dying to tell someone about my kids and what's up with them lately kinda thing. My co-workers are a little tired of it!! Posting a thread about just my kids seems a little self-serving but we all must have someone we're really proud of, ya know, kids, Significant Others, Pets, Neices, Nephews, brothers, sisters, parents, etc. etc. Let's hear it! Don't hold back....uh, ok, I'll start. About a year and a half ago I told my oldest daughter that if her report card improved two times in a row (Nothing goes down, at least one subject goes up) that we would buy her a guitar that she had been asking for. (See, it's a music thread, sorta..) Anyway, each report card since has been ok but it either stayed the same or one subject went down. Because of a problem with reading comprehension we got her a tudor, and not only did she earn the guitar, she earned second honors for the first time ever (all A's and B's)!!! We got the guitar Saturday and now I'm teaching her everything I know.....should be done by this Saturday!!

So what makes you proud????

Frank

Um, Matt, being only 22 has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not you have kids. Plenty of people under 22 have kids.

Zenith the Mighty Viking Dog, Belle the 52-lb. Lap Dog, and HRH Thumper, King of the Hill, can all be seen at my photo album: Click here

My friend Carrie has the cutest baby in the world, Miss Caileigh. She will be 2 in May and is just a hoot.

Had a wee mouse, Bongo Knock (broken nose in Romaness - Gypsy). He was a great old pal, lived about 2 and a half years. I saved him from an infernal glue trap placed untinkingly in his path when he was a scant few weeks old... I wont have the things in my house. He lived in a six room sweedish environment, quite happy, comeing out of his cotten igloo every night to hear Genie and I sing to him before bed. He died a few months ago, and was burried in an oak coffin in the back yard. His funeral was quite a formal event, attended by the great fluter, Cathal McConnel, who said of him, "Och he was a great wee mousie"
In deed he was, Lasho Drom, Bongo

Matt, I would venture to guess that most folks under 22 have under 22 kids, anywhere from 0 to 21!!!

Well Sinsull and MMario I'm waiting on a phone call from my Mrs for the results of Brendans checkup. News at 11. He's a cute bugger however and seems to enjoy Jimmie Rodgers "Miss The Mississippi And You". Even when I sing it at 1:00 AM.

And Matt - about children - I know a social worker here in Texas that had a case involving a 24 year old GRANDFATHER.

I used to have a budgie named Cactus who enjoyed cowboy music, specifically Michael Martin Murphey's Cowboy Songs album (the very first one). I'd put that on and he'd just chirpchirpchirpchirp. Sadly he went to budgie heaven a couple of years ago.

Thanks for starting this thread, Pseudolus. It's the perfect place to announce this news.

Some of you are familiar with the difficulties my stepdaughter Emily has had. She was part of a long, nasty custody battle and spent a few years living with her dad, who was emotionally abusive (that's why my wife left him). When she came to us, she was angry at the world, and especially herself; had already flunked her 9th-grade year; and couldn't see beyond the moment.

Well........She wound up dropping out of school when she turned 16 and basically screwed off for the next year. Last fall, she decided to go live with her father for a while to take advantage of a free GED program in Virginia (we live in Maryland). She called us last night with the results.

She Made It!!!!!!!!!!

We are so proud and happy for her we could just explode. She set her sights on her target and accomplished it. She worked hard and even managed to put up with her father at the same time. Emily is so pumped about this that she now realizes that anything is possible. She told us, "I had to go back to school to find out I'm not stupid."

Thanks for the opportunity to share.

jeffp

I had a rat named Izzy who was a delight. I had a ferret harness she would walk about in, and I would take her to the park and the little kids would flock around me like I was the Pied Piper. Their mothers all stood back in a ring about 20 feet (ca. 6m) in circumference, yelling in to their kids, "When you're done looking at that -ugh!- thing, I'll be right here."

She would ride atop the hood of my sweatshirt, right against my neck, and fall asleep. If you held her up to your face, she'd kiss your nose.

Alas, she is gone, and my stepdaughter's athsma makes it unkind to get another. But when she moves out.....

That's awesome Jeff!!!! And congratulations to Emily!! That is truly great news.....

On a side note, and I hope I say this right so as not to offend, but I'm really proud of you too! Sometimes it's difficult to let someone go do what they need to especially when you know the road will be tough. And it's doubly tough as a step-parent. My wife loves my kids and has taken a sincere interest in their lives and I love her for it. Unconditional love from a step-parent is a special thing. Emily is a very lucky girl.....

Frank, you're not going to offend me by telling me you're proud of me!! *BG* I've found (or discovered) that sometimes you have to let them find their own way and just be there to help pick up the pieces when they stumble. There's a lot of breath-holding involved, though. It is sweet though, when you realize that some of what you've tried to teach them has actually sunk in. Maybe some parent of a troubled teen will take heart from my experience.

Bubba is very busy being a typical 22 yr old male----Hormones and Cars and Motorcycles.......(mom is of course, his Personal Slave), Kate has not been Truly Well for a long time and we are on the Diagno$tic Trail......if it weren't for the Corgi's, I'd go stand in front of a train. The younger of my twins does a lot of inventing songs, about whatever he's playing with/thinking about/doing at the time, kind of rambling and folksy, but he does have rhyme and meter... and last night he told me (no prompting) that he wanted to be a songwriter when he grows up! He'll make a doozy, if he does!

And the elder one has just set some kind of record, three weeks in a row where he got to school on Monday, then got sick and was home the rest of the week. Luckily I can work from home if I have to...

And Jeffp/Emily, Congrats Big Time! Where in VA, says the Charlottesville denizen?

Mrrzy, her dad lives in Dale City, in Prince William County. It makes visitation difficult, as we have old vehicles and it's a 3 1/2 hour round trip on a good day (and I-95 has very few good days). Fortunately, the kids are now adept at riding the Metro system, which involves a 1 hour round trip at either end, saving a lot of wear and tear on both the vehicles and the parents.

Cobble and I are owned by three beautiful Skye Terriers, Kilty and her babies, Liusaidh and Somhairle. They have all been exhibited at Crufts and frequently represent the breed at the Kennel Club's( UK ) Discover Dogs exhibitions, which promotes responsible dog ownership. We are so proud of them. Liusaidh and Somhairle have a lovely sister who now lives in Ocean Springs, Mississippi , she became a champion last year.

How we love 'em!!!

My little bratling came home with a certificate today saying she'd come into class on her own!!! As I have had several days when I didn't get away from school until 9.30am, and the childminder has had to haul her baby in as well, to make sure she got into the class, this is an enormous acheivement!! I'm so proud of her.....

The cat on the other hand has peed on the wrong side of the litter tray, eaten half my supper and is now asleep on the monitor with her tail hanging over the screen....

He wants to be a animator, and he's done sculptures of the man-eating plant from Little Shop of Horrors, a Martian, a robot, and he's working on a T Rex. When he graduates I bet he'll get a job with Spielberg or Disney.

LtS, my cat does that tail thing, too. I am thinking of marketing a small attachment which one could put at the top of their screeen, a sort of barrier, which would attach with velcro. At the mo', I have stiff cardboard about 2-3 inches high, taped across the top, so that he can not drape in that direction.:-)

Tell your bratling I said "You go, gyrl!"

hey aesop, my youngest daughter is just embarking also, on a Programme in 3D computer animation in Vancouver this month. She's done some classic animation and her first short placed second in B.C. at one of the major festivals a couple of years ago. Miss her so much, she's been across the pond from us over a year now and I don't get to see her as often as I would like, as the ferry costs are becoming a bit prohibative for frequent visits, so I've resorted to plastering her face all over my 'puter as wallpaper.

Senior daughter now has an apartment in town and returns all the time to do her laundry and partake in Sunday dinners. She's currently, after floundering around at university for a few years and dumping a promising chance for a career in opera, involved in courses in web design, java script, HTML and a bunch of other stuff I don't know much about,

Senior dog Old Wort, has the amazing ability to go downstairs on just his front feet with his hind feet tucked up, which I never considered out of the ordinary until a friend seemed to be blown away by it. What's really amazing I think, is his ability, at the ripe old age of 98 in dog years, to service our unspayed Westie, without the use of Viagra or his testicles.

Also have two hayburners in the front yard, without much to brag about recently, other than their ability to stow the stuff and create piles of sh*t. Just stacked a ton and a half of orchard grass single handed a few weeks ago and it always reminds me I'm getting old too. The animals and youngest daughter can be viewed on the Mudcat photo permathread. The animals don't mind, but I have a feeling my youngest daughter might object if she knew her picture was there.

But what would you do with that hay if you didn't have the hayburners?

Our gelding is refered to as the "Mobile lawn ornament" - he is half Belgian, a quarter Quarterhorse and the remainder is standardbred. A red-Golden Palimino in colouration with phantom dapples in the summer - he really is an awesome sight when he decides to prance about the pasture.

His loyal companion, Pedro, is a tiny Sicilian burro - who holds his own in eating. We used to have a mare that had to be penned seperately from the gelding because he would not let her eat...the burro doesn't take that kind of guff!

then we have the two mountain lions barn cats. We have decided their father must have been a golden retriever because

1)their mother was about six pounds - they are about 18 lbs of muscle...each

2) they come when called

3)they will follow us about as we work in the yard

4) they love to have their bellies scratched

5)they are long haired orange tabbies

a gee MMario you reminded me, I forgot dear Mao our barn cat who would love to be a housecat if only the dogs would permit it.

MMario I wouldn't buy the stuff, as I am currently doing so now......ours are small Arab crosses, bay gelding 7/8ths and a really pretty boy when he is in shape and cranky old chestnut mare 3/4s, with some Appaloosa thrown in, if the spots inside her bottom lip are truly an indication. One of their saving graces is that they are easy keepers. And our gelding too, bullies the mare all the time, but at least when I'm feeding them they are separated enough and he just snaps at her over the rail in the run-in shed. But because of this feeding arrangement they hang out in the shed all the time, especially during the winter and hence all the poo.

OK - Here we go - Bretta says the Doctor told her that Brendan is in the top 75 percentile for weight and height. He's 20.5 inchs long and 8 pounds with a dry diaper. His lungs are in great shape which was a worry for us since he was a preemie. Since his brothers death we plan to give him several tests to eliminate any concerns we have over his health. We've very pleased with his doctor. We asked several doctors who they would take their children to and we all got the same name. Luckly she's on our insurance. She even talks to Brendan and holds him during the exams. I like that in a doctor. She also happens to think that Brendan is a beautiful baby so we have no concerns about her vision. We're having a wonderful time with Brendan now. Our only conflicts are over who gets to hold him. Brendan and I have long talks during his 1:00 AM feeding about how he is expected to grow up to be a liberal. Actually I'll settle for kind, caring, open minded and fun loving. We can decide the big questions like Berklee vs. Julliard later. No pressure. As you can tell I'm enjoying parenthood.

Yo Pict, Fjords are good! despite the fact one threw my daughter three or four years ago, when it was hit by a rock from a passing bicycle on the old Kettle Valley Railway line, and that in the middle of an Ironman, with them dropping like flies in the heat, the ambulance still managed to arrive post haste, no great damage done, except for hurt pride and the wind knocked out. But it scared the sh*t out of Mum.

I've got a seven-year-old son. He's often a pain in the ass, but they tell me he's gifted in school, and he's what keeps me going at times. He's one of those kids that everybody keeps saying, "Oh, he's such a good kid..." but at home he's the equivalent of Dr. Jeykll and Mr. Hyde. He's a Taurus; so am I. We fight, we argue. He knows I love to sing; he trys to sing but can't carry a tune. I tell him he needs to practice - all hell breaks loose. I would die for this child if he doesn't kill me first.

Metchosin I was training one some years ago in a field when this kid came to the edge of the field and let off a firework rocket needless to say the horse threw me and bolted. The kid took off mind you the sight of an over 6 foot, bearded, red haired, furious Scotsman in highland dress charging towards him did help him to make that decision. It never ceases to amaze me how insensitive and stupid people can be about horses.I'm in Denmark so there are a lot of Fjord horses here for fairly cheap I like the idea of a Halflinger or a Friesan but they are expensive and not so hardy.

myself as a raging red haired Scot also, albeit more terrier size, I'd give an arm and a leg for a Icelandic pony or any gaited horse at my age, as long as it was bomb proof. But they are pricey, so I'll keep posting (non electronically) and just dream my dreams.

My wife is after an Icelandic(but I'm after a Bechstein upright piano)but they're a bit small for me.Over here bombproof means it's been out on the road once and there were no accidents I once saw a farmer grab a Fjord horse by the ear to catch it and then slap it on the face because it wouldn't let him lift its hoof. They give all the Fjord horses a mohican as well it looks pretty mad with the eel stripe and all.

Scots abroad so true the family of my wife(Danish)have given all my kids nicknames because they can't pronounce their real names and my kids think modern Scotland is full of people speaking Gaelic, wearing kilts and battling the English.Where are you from back home Metchosin?

Wesley, thanks for the update and Happy B-day to Brendan!

My daughter's little 3/4 Arab 1/4 Connemarra mare, who just died this past year at I think it was 30/31 yrs old never took any crap from the geldings or mares. She was smaller than almost all of them, but they never got near her when she ate. She had a wicked and fast hind kick, both feet at once, and used her voice like a mustang protecting her foal. otherwise she was completely bombproof and a very sweet ride.

Frank, your opening post is adorable, and there ARE things I could share, but I am going to have to go with my first thought upon reading the thread title. I've tried to hold this in since I first saw it, but it's hurting too much to keep it in!

Now I see this is YOUR thread, and it's even better!

So Thought One was: "THEY HAVE FLEAS."

Thought Two: "You will have to come investigate personally to see exactly what I mean by that!"

I am sure the right kind of music will drive out the fleas. Perhaps you will be the Pied Piper of... no, we are not in Potter County, lessee.... hafta work on that one!

We'll use the amps. Electrric Exterminators. Porch band. Do you want to play the distortion-pedaled bass?

have not got any childers... but got two lovely neices, who I adore and are great fun... even if they do nag me about hurrying up and finding someone to marry, so they can be my bridesmaids... I keep telling them.. I would rather have a huge party than spend loads of money on frivolities... invite a load of musicians, have a marquee on an aunts farm... clean up the barns... for camping space... have a ceremony of sorts (not religious) at my fave quiet spot... and then play great music till the wee small hours.... lol...

My neices are 10 and 5... the ten year old is a proper miss... and the 5 year old is a right tomboy... and has the same sense of humour and adventure as her aunty... But the 10 year old is as prone to worrying about allsorts just like her aunty too..

I have two puddy cats...

Monty Moo - the daft wild cat, now tamed (sort of) and rescued out of a river - he was thrown in with his 3 other kitty brothers and sisters. He's naughty, a pest to my other cat, but capable of being really loving too... he likes micers, birds and rabbits... and is really interested in Hodge and Heg... the gardens two hedgehogs.. he also can be found in next doors house.. as he has taken a fancy to the two girl cats there...

Tigger Thomas, is the rather rotund counter part... he is lazy... exerts himself, only when he has to - can't catch much for toffee... apart from Moths and Butterflies... and he likes to lick their wings....

he is often the brunt of Montys over playful attacks and can usually be found hiding from him.

He is a pest in the middle of the night, and wakes you up for cuddles...

Ella

One Daughter - 15 now. The last few weeks have brought a new diversion - she has aquired a young man. The game now is to find out about this young man - so that every time she decides to tell me something - I already know ( please note this is a game for two players - Tim and myself - when she tells us things - we act surprised and also note - we stay out of her room). It is a really funny feeling , having a daughter who is dating. My brothers have promised to come round and be intimidating - big lads , my brothers .

As for pets - we were reduced to mice as I'm somewhat allergic to cats, dogs etc. They were fun. We had two male mice - Gandalf and Bilbo. When they were young they kept getting out of their cage and we had to have a net curtain nearby to throw over them as they scurried past. I came home one day to find a very round mouse fast asleep in the food bag. However, when they got older all they did was fight viciously and we had to separate them.

All the best

Julie

There's a cat, but no kids at our house. I work in a children's hospital, though, so am reminded daily of the spectrum of possibilities. It is very instructive and humbling to see these people who exist effortlessly in the present. When does that ability evaporate? When is it that we become focussed on the future? Is it when adults start asking us " What are you going to be when you grow up?"

I teach a night course to 9-12 year olds. "Anybody here have a job?", I ask. A 12 year old girl puts up her hand. "My job is being a kid." Brilliant.

Our cat is called CSIS, (See-sis, after the Canadian government spy outfit}. Aside from the normal cat activities (inactivity) she enjoys jumping onto the dining room table (forbidden) and breakdancing to whatever is playing on the stereo. No kidding. She lies on her back and squirms like a salted slug. She's partial to fiddle music. Perhaps some atavistic connection to her ancestors and kinfolk who sacrificed their abdomens to music.

Here is the first poem I remember writing, about a cat we had when I was a kid. She was orange/gold and was a consistent part of my childhood, from kindergarten til I left home for college. This poem from grade one or two:

We have a cat called Nugget.
My mom won't let you bug it.

Cheers, Bardford

3) Flown to china and taken a tour down the Yang-tze (November)

4)- spent a week in Auckland

5) toured Australia - a whirlwind month! (December)

6) and are currently traveling back to Cape Cod from Seattle - via California, Texas, Georgia, New York. - by car mind you...

They already have their next trip - a tour of Nunivat - planned and signed up.

They do check in every couple of weeks.

My kids are both grown up and moved out on their own (though one is not really an "empty-nester" until they get their stuff out of the house...). Actually, some 'Catters may have met one or both of them at Getaways and elsewhere--they're both fine folksingers. The oldest, Ken Schatz, is an actor and acting coach in New York City, and one-half of "The NexTradition." Dan Schatz is a Unitarian minister in New Hampshire and a multi-instrumentalist and singer of traditional, "new folk" and original songs. Little kids are cute and fun, but the real payoff comes when they grow up to be perfectly nice people you enjoy spending time with! I also have a silly gray cat named Roscoe, though Dan calls him "Underfoot," because that's where he usually is.

Cheers, Nancy

you should see them in their matching sweatshirts - the ones with "parents of" and all the "kids" names on the front- and on the back "grandparents of" and all the grandkids names - colour coded to the parents name. It wasn't easy fitting all the names on the sweatshirts! (I am one of nine siblings) But they like them because they are great ice-breeakers when they are meeting new people. (Not that either of them has ever really had a problem with that.)

Last summer Mom was bewailing the fact that her "baby" is over 35. (and a good thing, too, since his older daughter is going to be a HS senior this year!)

And that as of july he will be the only one of her children still under 40.

One wonderful hubby, two delicious cats. No kids of our own but lots of kids in my life, through work and church, that I'm proud of.

I'm not sure who is higher maintenance, though, the hubby or the cats. Both yowl when they're hungry. Neither seem to be capable of cleaning their own bathroom. Both leave piles of hair lying around, and sleep a lot. But they're all warm and cuddly on cold nights... and none of them snore. Well, Lucy snores a little if her head is pushed into the pillow.

Lucy the Obese Calico is 17 pounds on a little body that should weigh 7 or 8 pounds. She most resembles a wallowing harbor seal. Simber the Long-Haired Red Tabby is a large and muscle-y creature, fearless when stalking pieces of paper but terrified of the door buzzer. Kitty the Weird and Skinny Maine Coon, rest her furry little soul, died last May from FIV. Thankfully, neither of the other two have shown any signs of it. I haven't had the heart to have them tested, as they are devoted to one another and I couldn't bear having one infected cat put down if the other was negative. May as well let them live in happy ignorance, poor little creeters.

No kids; all my dependants have four feet:

Bentley, the Labra-Dane, who is the best dog in the whole world.

Buddy, the elderly Basset hound, who recently got his Therapy Dog certificate. He doesn't think its a big deal, he just sits there and gets petted lots and lots. But the seniors really enjoy him.

Jack, the huge orange tabby. Knows how to say "FEED ME" in six languages, all of them annoying. But he comes when he's called and fetches.

Bones, the not-so-large black cat. Survived being run over (before I knew him) and three months in a body cast. Now he can jump my six-foot stockade fence without thinking twice about it (which is why he doesn't get to go outside anymore!) No mouse lives that he can't catch (another reason to keep him in - he only eats the heads and leaves the poor headless bodies as "presents" for me). Can't sleep unless his paw is entwined around my ankle.

Three box turtles; the sexual prowess of the male is documented on the Turtle Mating thread.

Daviddw, thanks very much for the link. That is a fine and powerful story. I hope the attorneys are successful for the widow. Monica really captured the stark realities tinged with such odd bits here and there of colour...the marigolds, candle, incense...no wonder you are so proud! Wow, she's only 27?! That's just wonderful!!

LOL

2 boys did navy nuke school and took fleas to active duty, 1 sub and one carrier, and the carrier one, my stepson Mike, is in port for the first time in 4 months and called us first, tonight. The other, Hardi's stepson David, has a plan for regaining custody of the boat he was on before being pressganged onto a rival sub. AND they are not in jail!

1 daughter overcoming her third round of mono to be a college frosh on campus 10 minutes away, and brave enough and smart enough to fail a class rather than make herself sicker, while getting great grades in the rest of the classes, all honors level.

1 cat who gave up catatonia (not kidding) in favor of lap occupation and such, my son's cat who has adopted me finally after going into shock when he left.

1 cat who has found every possible spot in my house to pee, poop, amd spit up on, who looked SO cute when he got a 6" styrofoam ball stuck on, with burrs, to the fluffy underside of his gray plumy tail... bouncy bouncy down the stairs, funny sight-- but who has accepted incarceration with grace (Grace is happy too) and who escaped an attempted catnap, no a kidnap, today by marauding cat-needers who came by to take him away...

1 dead wild bird in the burnt storage addition of the house, half eaten by...

numerous barn rats who have moved into same area again this winter despite roof being open to the rain and snow and wind, DUMB rats...

I can't claim the dog, a tiny red dalmatian. We feed her and love her, but she belongs to MMario AND HE KNOWS IT. Little Ruby Hoobie Dooby. She's OK for a soul-scarred kennel rat from a puppy mill who had never been touched by a human bean til she was liberated at 8 months by the SPCA, never saw a door open and close, never been in a house, never been on a leash, everything terrifying-- she plays and snuggles and then lurks in her corner, it all being much too much for her... Oh she has her own computer chair now and was "at" Mudcat with me the other day for about a half hour, holding hands. Dogs at PalTalk. I'll give ya a Pal! Man's best friend that's who! Give her an admin button...

And fleas.

OH AND THE CLUSTER FLIES, billions! Come on-- who has cluster flies???

(Yo, Frank, you still coming over????)

~Susan

David, that was a powerful story you're daughter wrote, please pass along my congratulations to her....I was deeply moved and delighted to know there are such journalists still in the world......as for that poor family, I wish there was something we could do.Is there?

Though I do wonder if I am ever going to grow up.

And any ways... taming of the shrew has NOTHING on me...

Lol - once (and then some) bitten twice shy!

I've never been able to decide if Matt knows what he is saying sometimes and chortling merrily at his keyboard or if he hasn't a clue. Either way - I'm usually glad he's around

Frank, we'll cake-decorate you into the schedule. People may misunderstand your cheesecake comment BTW. I AM a pastor's wife you know. Tame that tongue! You gonna do mewzic with me for Saturday night service then? If so we need to collaborate on tunes. You pick six and I will, then we can run through them and see which ones work when we do them together, for a final list of 3-5 items?

Matt, Mon is OK, real bizz. She is here each Weds. evening. Maybe we phone you sometime and sing for you.

~S~

Oops, sorry about that cheesecake comment, although it's more fun to keep 'em wonderin than to explain so I'll just leave it at that!!! We know better and that's all that matters.... :)

*chuckle* Matt - not that I would advise it; but the problem is you keep thinking with your brain - which is actually a rare condition for us males at your age.

My son Daniel skied (skiied? whatever)a couple of miles earlier this week (cross-country). This is a major achievement for someone with balance and coordination problems who couldn't even stand up on skis a few years ago.

My daughter (who wishes to be known as Wharf Rat) will probably graduate from high school without having a nervous breakdown.

We have two rats, Olivia and Bianca. They like to eat spaghetti (we give them each an end of the same piece!) and dive down the neck of your shirt.
