I have come across a great version of the Big Scioty that was video recorded at Clifftop 2009. It sounds like they are singing the words that nick p noted above.

Rachel Eddy (fiddle), Elizabeth Fitch (fiddle), Kristian Herner (banjo), Kevin Fitch (banjo uke), and Ashley Carder (guitar) play Big Scioty under a tarp while it rains at Clifftop 2009.

Forgot about this thread but I want to apologize to any and all for the West Virginia jokes especially in light of the tornado laden band of storms that just passed through there. Lots of destruction and even the governor is homeless as one took out the Governor's Mansion in Charleston. I saw some pictures and the entire trailer park was flattened...................

Ray's lyrics come from (via) Richie Stearns (Horse Flies) when he was in the Rnegades with James Leva, June Drucker and Carol Elizabeth Jones. A compilation of their now out of 'print' recordings (1993 & 1995) can be found as FRC605 from the Field Recorders Collective - www.fieldrecorder.com - and well worth every penny/cent (as are all of their catalogue.

If I get the time I'll listen to the lyrics and list them but it may not be for a few days so someone may be quicker.

The words I remember being sung to Big Scioto sounded a bit like:

And had lots of

Getting back to one of the original questions, I have ever only heard one person singing lyrics for the tune. And since his singing style is not easy to understand, I simply asked him what the lyrics are. Sung to the "a" part of the tune, they are:

FYI - he told me that he also sings two other verses from time to time, but usually can only remember them while in the middle of the tune. So I will just have to wait until the next time he's playing it to catch what they are.    :)

Ebbie, the word here is spelled S-C-I-O-T-O .....with an O on the end, so it maybe different. Oddly enough, the word is pronounced as the O as "uh".....Anyway, its pronounced sy-OH-tuh (emphasis on the middle OH) with the c being silent (sy or sigh for "sci"... as in science)

Living basically on the Scioto River, I can vouch for the fact it runs through Ohio and has some beautiful scenery and some really awful spots as well. It is west of me here and joins with the Olentangy in Columbus. The river bisects the southern half of the state (E/W) and enters the Ohio at Portsmouth.

I think the name is actually Mingo, an Iroquois tribe that lived along the Ohio and Scioto Rivers whose most famous chief was Logan and tried for years to maintain a peace.

Sorry, not much other info for you from here in Ohio where we are "eat up" with Indian names for rivers.....Tuscarawas, Muskingum, Olentangy, Scioto, Mohican, Ho-Hocking, Ohio................

Well, besides Ohio, the best well known Sciota is in PA, but there is also a township in IL called Sciota, and IL is where the Mormans began their migration to Utah from....(I think)

So...I have since discovered that there is a Sciota River in or near Cincinatti, Ohio, and that the word means "deer" in Iroquois. There also seems to be some connection between the name Sciota and the Mormon church. Anyone care to relate these shards of info to the tune?

Howdy all. Long time no write. A group I pick with over in Paris have discovered a fiddle tune called "Big Sciota". I listened to a rendition on the Web by something called Rhythm Exchange. The tune doesn't do much for me -- no blues in it. Anyways, my French "copins" are wondering if anyone has any information about the tune. They are under the impression that Sciota refers to the town in Pennsylvania and that there is a river of the same name nearby. They also allude to a connection with the Iroquois indians. Anyone able to shed further light on this?
