Subject: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Kim C Date: 08 Feb 01 - 10:10 AM I have a question for all our English friends, regarding the Prince Formerly Known as Windsor. I see that he is now calling himself Edward Wessex. Meaning absolutely no disrespect whatsoever... what's up with that? I'm just curious. |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: English Jon Date: 08 Feb 01 - 10:23 AM Well, the Windsors are in fact Sax-Coburgs so you might be better off asking some Germans. Personally, my family were all killed off at Stamford Bridge, so I can't really comment... ;) Maybe he just wants to distance himself from the rest of the family? Can't blame him. Cheers, Jon

Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Gervase Date: 08 Feb 01 - 11:11 AM When the balding twerp finally got around to marrying the PR bint he's currently semi-shacked up with, his ma gave him an extra wedding present - to whit, the Earldom of Wessex (very handy down the Rotary Club, that...) As a result, said balding twerp now calls himself Edward Wessex. I wish I was a citizen! I can't help but resent being the subject of a family like that... |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: nutty Date: 08 Feb 01 - 11:25 AM I considered it an entirely appropriate title as Wessex is a non-extistent, fictional county. PS.His wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex is also known as Sophie Wessex |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Kim C Date: 08 Feb 01 - 11:57 AM So he is now Edward, Earl of Wessex? Hmmm.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Lox Date: 08 Feb 01 - 12:05 PM What does that say about David Essex? And what do you think about Prince Charles decision to name himself George VII when he becomes king (if). And why isn't there a Norsex? The truth needs to be told. lox |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Steve Parkes Date: 08 Feb 01 - 12:20 PM Well, there's a Surbiton and a Norbiton; there really ought to be an Eabiton and a Webiton too. Steve And an East Bromwich! |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Morticia Date: 08 Feb 01 - 12:22 PM Lox, you must have heard of Norsex please, we're British. |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Lox Date: 08 Feb 01 - 12:43 PM Ah, you must be thinking of "Norsex please we're Vikings" lox |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Les from Hull Date: 08 Feb 01 - 12:52 PM Of course, there's no South Riding of Yorkshire, because Riding comes from thirding (or so I was told). So when I asked a Tipperary man why Tipperary only had two Ridings, he thought for about two-fifths of a second and said "Jaze, any fool can get it right!" Les from Hull from the East Riding |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Lox Date: 08 Feb 01 - 01:05 PM I thought it was Humberside * lox |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Les from Hull Date: 08 Feb 01 - 01:14 PM Careful what you say, Lox. Don't make me come over there! |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Lox Date: 08 Feb 01 - 01:21 PM Nya ha haaaaa *GGG* |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: IanC Date: 09 Feb 01 - 05:39 AM Wessex is neither a county nor is it nonexistent (though it only exists in a historical sense). It is the kingdom of the West Saxons, which at one time included most of southern England. Thomas Hardy didn't invent it, you know.
Cheers! |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: wes.w Date: 09 Feb 01 - 10:39 AM As a resident of this 'Wessex', we've had Bath (he of the wifelets) and his Free Wessex party on the political area in the past, and I've had a Free Wessex badge for longer than that (25 years?). See my name tho'. But being born near Surbiton, I can only add Effingham, Horsley, Clandon, London Road and Guildford. Mind the doors..... wes |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 09 Feb 01 - 10:56 AM English Jon said his family were all killed at Stamford Bridge- that's what you get for supporting Chelsea instad of Aston Villa RtS |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: wes.w Date: 09 Feb 01 - 11:14 AM Logic problem: If all his family were killed, how come he's alive? |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Greyeyes Date: 09 Feb 01 - 03:53 PM As one who hails from the ancient kingdom of Wessex, I should point out that it eventually developed into the most powerful English kingdom, included Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Dorset and part of Somerset, and ultimately, under Egbert, Alfred and their successors, developed into what we now know as England. The creation of an Earl of Wessex was welcomed by many of us, it was just a pity it had to be that slap-headed loser. |
Subject: RE: BS: Edward Windsor/Wessex From: Fiolar Date: 10 Feb 01 - 04:46 AM It was a great tragedy that Harold got killed at Hastings. Pity he hadn't waited for the rest of his army after defeating Hardrada at Stamford Bridge rather than rushing south to face William the Bastard. |
