I have a question for all our English friends, regarding the Prince Formerly Known as Windsor. I see that he is now calling himself Edward Wessex. Meaning absolutely no disrespect whatsoever... what's up with that? I'm just curious.

Well, the Windsors are in fact Sax-Coburgs so you might be better off asking some Germans.

Personally, my family were all killed off at Stamford Bridge, so I can't really comment... ;)

Maybe he just wants to distance himself from the rest of the family? Can't blame him.

When the balding twerp finally got around to marrying the PR bint he's currently semi-shacked up with, his ma gave him an extra wedding present - to whit, the Earldom of Wessex (very handy down the Rotary Club, that...)
As a result, said balding twerp now calls himself Edward Wessex.


I wish I was a citizen! I can't help but resent being the subject of a family like that...

I considered it an entirely appropriate title as Wessex is a non-extistent, fictional county.
PS.His wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex is also known as Sophie Wessex

Wessex is neither a county nor is it nonexistent (though it only exists in a historical sense). It is the kingdom of the West Saxons, which at one time included most of southern England.

Thomas Hardy didn't invent it, you know.

As a resident of this 'Wessex', we've had Bath (he of the wifelets) and his Free Wessex party on the political area in the past, and I've had a Free Wessex badge for longer than that (25 years?). See my name tho'.

But being born near Surbiton, I can only add Effingham, Horsley, Clandon, London Road and Guildford.

As one who hails from the ancient kingdom of Wessex, I should point out that it eventually developed into the most powerful English kingdom, included Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Dorset and part of Somerset, and ultimately, under Egbert, Alfred and their successors, developed into what we now know as England. The creation of an Earl of Wessex was welcomed by many of us, it was just a pity it had to be that slap-headed loser.

It was a great tragedy that Harold got killed at Hastings. Pity he hadn't waited for the rest of his army after defeating Hardrada at Stamford Bridge rather than rushing south to face William the Bastard.
