Subject: MacIntosh program

I was wondering if anyone knows what program I could get for a MacIntosh computer to be able to hear the music at the bottom of the pages where it says "click to hear". I have a Power Mac and I can play audio CD's on it and have good speakers, but nothing happens when I click so I assume I don't have the proper software. I would love to be able to hear some of these songs. Any help would be appreciated. I love your site!

you want realplayer or something along those lines. I'm pretty sure they have a mac compatible version.

QuickTime, which comes with the Mac, should be able to play the various sound files.
However, you may have to go to the preferences for your browser and remind it to associate various file types - like midi, .wav, .mpg, .avi or what-have-you - with the relevant programs and plug-ins on your Mac
If QuickTime won't work for whatever reason, then RealPlayer should do the trick.

Keep asking, if these suggestions do not help. There are a number of Mac users at Mudcat. There was a thread once about a Mac Mudcat Users Group if you want to try to see who else is using Mac and what some of the issues are about using Mudcat features. Other threads with [Mac] in the title should be searchable as well.

Hope you will be joining Mudcat!

Netscape, at least, will tell you what plug-in you need to get if you can't play or view something, and it usually will give you the option of downloading it--

SoundApp is a handy program to have,(you can download it free from ZDNet--Click here) because it will allow you to play almost any of the music files you might download (though it won't help with streaming audio). Also, FYI, any MIDI files that you might listen to on-line are stored in Netscape in the Netscape Preferences folder the cache folder, or, with Internet Explorer, in the Temporary Files folder in Explorer Preferences folder. You can just pull them out and keep them in a folder on your hard drive, and you can play them back with Quicktime or with SoundApp.

Also, the MIDI files can be opened in Music Notation programs as sheet music, and opened in a sequencer program where you can edit them and play them back on a synthesizer--

MMario, I have a number of tunes which I would like to add to the DT data base. I no longer have my piano here, but "Eureka!" I just realized I have an old keyboard which I could probably plug in to the hard drive and use the SoundJam Programme which I have, to make mp3s of the tunes. Would I send these mp3 files to you to put in the DT? And if so, should I send them to Driveway or something like that, in order for you to download them?

By the way, SoundJam is an excellent programme for making mp3 files from sound input on the Mac.

I have been looking around my computer and find I do have Realplayer installed. I had to reinstall my system software a few months ago. Before that time I was able to hear the music when I went to Bluemountain cards. Now I can't hear that either. I think I just need to tweak the system but have no idea how to do that. Everything that I have tried has failed. If any Mac users can help me I would appreciate it. I became a member yesterday because I really enjoy your site. Thanks for all the help so far. Gwenzsl

Gwenzs, check under the Apple Emblem for Control Panel then go to Sound and Monitor and make sure that the mute button is not on. For some reason or other on this machine, every so often I can't get sound and the mute has been turned on even though I didn't have it set like that before. Gremlins.....

Mets - is that keyboard audio output only or do you have a midi feed on it? You should be able to plug the sucker in and produce MIDI files, which are a lot more useful then MP3's (as far as I know, no one has mangaed to print sheet music from an MP3. As I mentioned above - there are programs for the Mac that will do that.

Unfortunately MMario I looked for the keyboard last night and I think my youngest daughter took it over to Vancouver with her because I can't find it. I will see if she can bring it back for awhile and see what I can do. Although it may be a mute point, the keyboard only has an audio output. Although I could make an attempt at writing the notation out by hand and emailing them.

We have a Finale Programme that my daughter used to use on the old Mac but its not compatible with the current system and we have been promised a Sibelius programme from a friend, but its been a long time coming. In either case, neither would probably be of much use to me for quite some time, I am a bit of a clutz when it comes to computers and it's my eldest daughter who's the music major. I can sometimes figure stuff out on my own, but it often takes a very long time and the occasional hand holding.

I checked out Barfly, but because of my ignorance regarding Midis, I had trouble making the leap on some of the terminology, etc. Too bad, I guess its back to the drawing board. SoundJam and mp3s seemed such an easy solution to pass on tunes, especially, since I thought only the melody would be required and I assumed the file would be very small.

Gwenszi just reread your post and realized that wouldn't be the problem if you are having no problem playing CDs.

MP3's are sound files and as such are still pretty large. Whereas midi's and abc are miniscule. There should be some program where you can put the music notation in and just save as a midi or abc.. That's what I do on my PC - just copy the notation into NoteWorthy Composer and then save as a midi (except now I also add lyrics and send joe the NWC file - killing two birds with one stone)

(Sorry - Barfly is actual for ABC tunes - but that would work as well!!!!)

Check out Harmony Assistant or Melody Assistant.Sorry, I don't have the URL handy. They might not solve your problem, but are robust packages and fun to play with. ie. transpose a midi of Danny Boy into a marching band score. Should the desire ever arise.
Cheers, Bardford

I finally got my computer working and can hear the music. It seems I did not have the version of Quicktime that I needed, and after much trouble I was able to download it and get it to work. I really appreciate all the messages and help from members. I am glad I joined and hope to be as helpful to others whenever possible. Thank you all.

Just now saw this thread. Glad things are working, Gwenzsi, but there may be another thing that has not been mentioned. If you have quicktime and you click on a site to play something, and nothing happens, it may be that you have to reset your default system under the preferences menu. Are you using Netscape? If so, downloading other sound players is simple, and the method of preference selection is well documented.

Callie:

I think your best bet is to get one of the two '486/'586 emulators (SoftWindows or VirtualPC) and use it to run Paltalk/.

You can get native ICQ for the Mac. Not something I have done a lot of, though.
