Thanks Jon for putting the blue clicky thing in. I will have to put you in Norfolk and take you out of Wales. Fibula I thought Wales was in Avon. I also grouped Manchester in Lancashire. What county is Peterborough in?

KitKat - I'll probably be going to Readifolk on Sunday - will look out for you. I might be wearing a M'cat t-shirt, but only if I can find it & if it fits me...
Otherwise - I'm short & wide with dyed black hair & batwing eye-makeup, so come & say hello if you recognise someone of that nature!!
Then I can tell you all about the Swan sessions.

Well Big J my memory does not seem to go that far back, I was still living in the Durham area then. It was in the days before I became a missionary and was sent to convert the buggers in deepest darkest Yorkshire (which I never did. You can always tell a yorkshire man but you can't tell him much). Where did you meet me? is that in your diary too. It reminds me of the night a few years back when I played at Stockton folk club. I had not played there for about eighteen years (because of my missionary work)and Ron Angel the organiser puled out a little moth eaten book and said "Now Bill Ye cant sing any of these songs" and gave me a long list of donts. I asked why not and he said "Ye sung them the last time ye were here" It seemed that since the opening of the club, about thirty years ago, they had kept a list of every song sung by every singer at the club. That list must be worth a fortune in the wrong hands.

Yep, that story about Stockton folk club is about the strength of it! At that time I was involved - along with playwright Willy Russell, in the Top Lock Folk Club in Runcorn where you appeared that night. If it's of any interest, the week after you were there the guest was Dave Burland and then on the 28th of February it was Nic Jones. Regards.

That is amazing Big J I didn't think anyone remembered me these days. Now when I go into a club they say "Err What was your name again" I am thinking of changing my name to Bill Who. It only goes to show though that old folksingers never die they just go on to Mudcat.
Now that there are three of you over there why not organise a Mudcat Gathering we might be able to get a boat full with all the UK catters. There are now 134 on the list. Im sure the craik would be ninety at that gathering.

Sugestion about posible location for a Gathering of UK Mudcatters. As there seems to be a festival on each weekend in the summer. Why not link to an established festival this could be to the benifit of all. Mudcat would not have to worry about campsites/acomodation provision of. The festival organisers would not have to worry about a rival gathering on there established weekend. As to which weekend a bank holiday would be best for people who have to travel long distances. Anouther Thread to try could be how many UK Mudcaters are Folk Festival Organisers? The Whitby Folk Festival Week 2001 clashes as you probably Know with Whitby Regatter. This is due to the Tides. So be warned Whitby will be very busy pub space will be at a premium. The Moore and Coast Festival is on a Bank Holiday Weekend (May) How about linking a gatering to that! See www.moorandcoast.co.uk

I'd like to see a general practice of putting up a thread any time you're planning to go to a festival, and then via that maybe setting up some arrangements to meet up at some time and place.

But I'd also like to have a get together that didn't coincide or clash with a festival, which would give more chance to swap songs and make music together.

Do we need to go for something on a weekend, or would weekdays be OK?

If weekdays are OK, one possibility might be to tag it on to an existing festival, as a kind of fringe event before or after. For example Fylde starts on a Thursday and goes on to the Sunday, so if we were to arrange to gather on the previous Monday or Tuesday it'd make a week of it, which I suspect might quite fit in with what Alan Bell is doing anyway, by arranging folkish concerts on the days leading up to the festival proper, which might make it easier getting approval for camping or whatever, and there would probably pubs which would have no problem with welcoming sessions.

Fylde is a long way from where I live - but it is actually pretty close to the geographical centre of Great Britain, and getting there by pubic transport isn't too much of a problem. (That was a problem for me with Llanfair.)

Or there might be other festivals where that kind of thing could be done. Walton in Essex for example, or Leigh-on-Sea.

Otherwise if it's a question of a weekend which won't clash with other festivals, there aren't many that don't, up until the coldish end of the year.

But the idea of a Mudcat gathering makes a lot of sense. A Mudfest.

Well, I think it might be a bit of a problem - the mind boggles...\

That magic spell checker I've got does have a few problems sometimes!

Reminds me of the time our local Childminders' Association put out a leaflet inviting everyone to come along to their "Pubic display" in a Harlow community centre.

I'll be at the Moor and Coast and I think it's a great idea to have a gathering as this festival isn't very busy compared to some, and a weekend in Whitby makes a great start to the season. Also I'd like to meet people after six months of (mainly) lurking here!

This link might be useful to Fionn. I got it from http://web.ukonline.co.uk/martin.nail/Folkmus.htm - Martin Neill's pages - English folk and traditional music on the Internet - which says there's a folk club in Mansfield - "The Brown Cow Folk Club - but the link to it which he gives (http://www.sbarrier.freeserve.co.uk/) doesn't seem to work.

Whether that's any use for Irish sessions, I don't know - but if there are any existing or in prospect, those links should help winkle them out.

Who said Peterborough is in Cambridgeshire . . Not any more it isn't; it's a Unitary Authority all on its own (but still operates jointly with Cambridgeshire on a number of things . . )

As I recall (but others certainly disagree with this interpretation) the Boundary Commission investigated Unitary Status for Huntingdon, Peterborough and Cambridge (city). First time round they rejected all three . . Huntingdon wasn't happy, and at that time their MP (one John Major) had a degree of influence. So all three were re-examined, and Peterborough (alone) was given (had forced upon it!) Unitary status . . without any strong desire for it. (In fact of the three proposals the one for Cambridge made most sense, but that's yet another story . .)

I just realised that they are organising festivals when I am out of the country. Are they trying to tell me something? Whitby's Moor and Coast is on when the German gathering is taking place and I will be in Belgium with Castleford Longsword team the same time as Chippenham.

I'd recommend that, rather than try for a generic thread about festivals in general, we put up individual threads for each one - less likely to get lost in the crowd.

Maybe with a common heading - "Mudcat England - who's for Sidmouth?" etc (I think the UK as such is too spread out. I imagine if you were living in Antrim you'd be more interested in what was happening in Donegal than in Essex.)

And if we have a generic one, maybe have this in addition to individual festival threads, and we could stick in a link to them when we start one.

I'd already noticed your club Sooz, and with this prompting I intend to get there soon. (A journely that will certainly challenge, and probably defeat, my commitment to public transport. Which would be a pity. with all that real ale on tap.)

And BTW Kevin, did you see ever see my query in another thread about whether you ever ran into an old hack called Les Mitchell?

Re a sugested get together at The Moor and Coast. I could have a word with the festival organisers this weekend as I should be in Whitby. That is if no one has any objections! I shall be at the Moor and Coast my self stagering about with Coblers Monday on the weekend of the 5th,6th&7th May. Its a pity Bill can't make it maybe I should take my Lap top and do a Link to the German Festival Via Pal Talk from the campsite if anyone has a tent with a Phone? Let me know again how many mudcaters will be going or would be going if there was a get together by posting to the Thread called How many Moor and Coast Mudcaters. Please only post if you will be going or would go if there was a gathering. I will then have a good idea how big the room should be. May be if we all posted a list of festivals that we can get to and or free weekends we could organise a larger gathering. That Bill can get to, It was his idea after all! But I see no reason why we can't have a session at the Moor and Coast.

Cavia

Yes, false as opposed to real. I know, it's a pretty crap name for a band but we're used to it now. We used to be called the Ballistic Brothers but we discovered there was another band of that name in London so we decided we should change our name quickly. So we came up with False McCoy to meet the deadline for some gig publicity. Since then we've heared nothing more about the other Ballistic Brothers.

I don't attend the Cottingham club these days, or for the last six years for that matter, though I was the founder member and ran it from 1985 to 1995.

We tend to play to pub audiences now. We will be playing at the Sun Inn (formerly Tap&Spile), Beverley on 18 March and Hessle Golf Club the night before (St Patrick's).

Cheers - Captain Swing

So far there have been 13 postings to the I will be at the Moor & Coast Festival type Thread. This includes one from I am a confused mudcater that I will apologise to now for my dyslexia. Even if there was a spell checker on this site it would not help. As their seems to be no objections to a gathering so far so I'll try and make a few tentative inquires this weekend. Gathering or not should the festival include Coblers Monday doing as we did last year a welcome to the festival Singaround we shall make everyone welcome give a special mention to Mudcaters. Hopefully the weather will be fine and sunny with no rain. I would hate to see Les playing his electric Bass in the Rain and starting to Link the Moor and Coast with the Franenstin branch of the Goths. PS is there any truth in the rumor that Mr and Mrs Duck are trying to produce there very own family Moris Side?

Well I'm just back from a long weekend in Whitby! It's a hard life but someone has to do it! As part of my dedication to the Mudcaters I have spent some considerable time this weekend making sure that the beer in all the Pubs in Whitby would meet with the approval of the any Mudcaters visiting Whitby. I took my several pint's of John Smith's Magnet Ale on special offer at £1 a pint in the Board Inn on Church Street and three or four visit's before I felt that I could recommend it to other Mudcater's.

However once I regained the use of my legs I managed to make it to the Endeavour for a couple of pints of Broadside. It was there I ran into one of the organisers of the Moor and Coast festival and he said that he would be only too happy to include a Mudcater's event within the festival. We then left the Endeavour along with one of the Organiser of the Whitby Folk Club Mick Haywood managed with some effort to cross the bridge and stagger into the Plough on Baxtergate the Beer Sam Smiths at £1.25 a pint is very good value. I was pleased to discover that the Plough, home of the Whitby Folk Club on Wednesday Nights, will be used this year for the first time by the Moor and Coast. After a few beers in the Plough we decided to reconvene in the Tap and Spile it was round and about here that thing seemed to get a little blurred and my memory is a little weak. But I think it is safe to say that a musical weekend in Whitby sound like a lot of fun! See you all there at the Moor and Coast

Whitby is always great - but with Moor and Coast being the date it is, it clashes with too many things down south.

I hope to get to Whitby week, and renew some acquaintances from last year.

But in the meantine, and even before Moor and Coast, there is the National Folk Festival at Sutton Bonnington. I'm hoping to get along again this year - and I've set up a thread asking if anyone else is planning to go.

Another good club in the area is Dougie McLean's Real Music Bar at the Taybank Hotel in Dunkeld (15 miles north of Perth)and you can find live music being played and sung there just about anytime. If its quiet when you go in - start playing or singing yourself. It is activly encouraged that you should do this.
