Maine President's weekend?

Anything exciting happening in the environs of Portland? I'll be in Falmouth, and may be able to talk my friends into something (they are classical music buffs primarily, but cross the line a little.) Barring any available good music, how about recommendations for places to eat really good fish? (Vegetarian chef goes on vacation!!!!)

Oh man, not another misconception!! I thought perhaps if there was a main(e) president, there was a secondary president too.......shhoo, I bin hangin' out wit spaw and bert too much I guess. Or if there is a Maine prez, is there a New Hampshire one too? (shut up Sorch)

Maine has produced many great men and women down through the ages but one who would debase themselves by being president.

Susan, you will be only 20 or so miles from me when you are in Falmouth. Uncle Jaque lives nearer there. Kendall lives about 30 miles south of there but I believe he is still in Florida. We might be able to scrounge up some people for a musical soiree.

Musically you have chosen a quiet time to visit. That is why I run my House Full Of Song Sundays but this month's is the day after tomorrow.

BUT! On Friday evening, February 16, at the Unitarian Church in Brunswick is the Side Door Coffeehouse. Doors open at 7:00 with open mike sign up at that time.

Doubt we'll be there by then. Looks like we will not leave VT until after 4:30 Friday, at the earliest. I'll check in with the other folks to see what their thoughts are on some sort of convivial gathering.

Sorcha, the entire thought of a NH president sends chills up me spine (although the Texas variant is doing more than that these days, I fear.)

Us Vermonters have a thing about New Hampster (sorry Barry, Jeri, and co. but you know how it is, it's that VT NH thing

Actually, I'm not in Florida, and would love to get together somewhere... Vermont did produce one president, Cal Coolidge. Probably the king of "Do nothing" He slept 18 hours a day so they say. Someone told H.L. Mencken that former President Coolidge was dead...he asked "How can they tell"? You probably dont care, but, Hannibal Hamlin was Lincolns first VP. And, if James G Blaine had not been "The continental liar from the state of Maine" he might have beaten Grover Cleveland. In those days, it was ok to father a child out of wedlock,AS Cleveland did, but, being a liar was not cool...my. how things have changed.

Um, and don't I remember something about Chseter Arthur? (speaking of bright lights. We stay out of the presidential business now.)

Any good place where we could all get together and eat FISH!!? I know that the others are up for that. Not sure how much of their classical music impairment they can get over as far as singing goes, but now eating is another matter. Saturday or Sunday lunch or dinner would be options.

The very best fish is created in my own kitchen..however, The Cannery in Yarmouth is good, the Muddy Rudder, also in Yarmouth, Or, The Snow Squall in South Portland. If you want cheap, The Weathervane in South Portland.

I'm in favor of cheap. The Weathervane is mostly fried seafood. Unfortunately it also has quick service so we wouldn't have much of an opportunity to sit and talk.

Farther north there are a few good places to eat but I generally have to work from hearsay. As a single parent with a kid in college and one on her way there I don't get out much. And when I do I go cheap. But I can make an exception for a Mudcat gathering.

Hey! It just occurred to me that the weekend is upon us and nothing has been established as a meeting place.

Also there is another event to consider. In Waldoboro, at the Waldo Theater is a Celtic concert featuring Castlebay and a number of other very talented musicians and dancers. The concert is on Saturday night and starts at 8:00. If we plan it right we can get supper at Moody's Diner.

Must be the lack of sophistication that brings out the people. According to Kenneth Roberts in his pamphlet "Don't Say That About Maine!" (1948) the Century Dictionary And Cyclopedia has the following definition of the transitive verb "sophisticate".

I would wish I was a sophist but definitely not a sciolist. (Lacking in sophistication, or even proper book larnin', I had to look up one of those words. At first I thought it a misspelling!)

Of course, I would expect a true sophisticate (as defined above) to use words like that...

Further instructions to finding the Sidedoor Coffee House in Brunwick. The UU Church is located at 15 Pleasant St., accross from the town post office and next to the library; the coffee house is actually in the basement. Always a good crowd of singers and listeners. Time again is 7 pm on 3rd fridays; you need to be there early for open-mike sign-up. This friday there's Carter Ruff as featured blues performer beginning at 9 pm. Oh, have to sign off. The kitty wants to chase the starlings in the parking lot.

Sorry to have missed Naemanson's Song-House last week, but a plethora of (fortunately minor) crises all week seemed to conspire against it, and there was just too much left to do sunday.

I have to be out of town tomorrow (Sat. 02/17) but would be interested in anything Sunday PM.

Re local eateries; Word has it that the Cannery here in Yarmouth was closed down for a spell due to repeated code infractions - "Child Labor" issues, and I'm not sure what else. The buzz is that it has been "going downhill" recently, but I don't know what it's current status is. The last time we ate there was last Summer, and it seemed OK then. I would be inclined to reccomend the "Rudder" up Rt. 1 just a little ways (which has a bar), or the "Down East" also on Rt. 1 in Yarmouth, which I think might be a little more "family" oriented.

For the in-between compromise between "elegant dining" and the "golden arches", we have "Chowderheads" also on Rt. 1 near the CVS Pharmacy and Romeo's Pizza. Simple but sustantial fare in an informal setting.

Whatever the itinerarry, enjoy your visit to Maine, Susan!

Susan..........if you still need a good resturant try one called STREET. It is off Fore Street and has the best fish I have eaten in Portland. Reservations are a good idea or going really early or late.....but always busy. You will love meeting the owner/chef if he is there over this weekend since you are one? Good luck....hope you have a great time.
