Just as the UK cannot be called insular.

It would be nice to know.

We deny citizenship since Bush became president. Besides some of us southerners get offended at being called "Yanks".

Shambles knows lots of you Yanks don't like being called Yanks, so he didn't call you that...(And we'd never call you Yankees!)

But you seem a bit reluctant to come out - I don't just mean on this thread, but even on the Locator, it's pretty clear there are a lot more US 'Catters than the 85 or so who have located themselves.

And please - that's not intended as an insult or a provoaction, it's an observation. Maybe the stereotype about how much more outgoing Amwericans are than the English is another of those stereotypes that need revising.

Is it true that the word Yankee was used as a collective name for an American from one of the New England states, Maine, Connecticut,Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, like we in England would call anyone from Newcastle Geordies or Londoners Cockneys. And does this also include New York state.

There used to be someone going by campfire on the locator but she seems to have disappeared and I haven't seen her on the threads in ages.

Hi, i'm here, although I hate to admit it these days, I'm so ashamed of the new Administartion. Hey, Canadian 'Catters, since my Grandmother was CAnadian, can I emigrate?

Bill, technically a New Yorker (which I am) is not a Yankee. Why we have a baseball team called that is beyond me. Yankees are only from New England, of which New York is not a part, being originally settled by the Dutch. But I don't mind being called a Yank, anyway.

Cheers, Becca

I really do wonder what happened to campfire. We could have used her expertise on a thread about turtle sex the other day. Anybody seen her?

I've never watched turtles copulate :/. and fyi, Yankees came from the words John Cheese, it got corrupted along the way, Jon cheez----yon keys-----yankees, that's what i remember from 8th grade history anyway. And yes, I am an american, and i don't believe our president defines who we are.

As for not being in the locator, I simply don't know how that works. When I put all of my information on here I automatically thought it became available to all Mudcatters since I checked the "yes" circles. Would someone explain what more steps need to be taken so that we Americans can be counted properly.

Katcina, the locator started life elsewhere (bbc set it up) and alhough it is now on the Mudcat site, it is a seperate entity and is maintained by Pene Azul. I think that the procedure is to email him with details but he doesn't appear to be around at the moment.

Yes, I read in a book that "John Cheese" was a derogatory name for Americans by the Dutch, or as they said "Jan Kees". Or so "The Rest Of The Story" said.
