There are 3 versions of ILL WIND performed by Flanders and/or Swann at YouTube. None of these are real videos (or films).

1. This one has a spoken introduction. It has still photos of F&S.

2. This one has no introduction, but it displays the lyrics on the screen.

3. Here, Flanders sings accompanied by an orchestra. (With photos.)

You can also find a couple of actual videos of performances by other artists—amateurs, perhaps.

Here is a rather explicit updated parody about the Mark Foley congressional page incident.

By the way, there is also an unrelated jazz piece called ILL WIND.

It's called Ill Wind. If you want an mp3 of it email me and I'll see if I can rip it for you and send it on.

I once had a whim and I had to obey it
To buy a French Horn in a second-hand shop;
I polished it up and I started to play it
In spite of the neighbours who begged me to stop.

To sound my Horn, I had to develop my embouchure;
I found my Horn was a bit of a devil to play.

So artfully wound
To give you a sound,
A beautiful sound so rich and round.

Oh, the hours I had to spend
Before I mastered it in the end.

But that was yesterday and just today I looked in the usual place-
There was the case but the Horn itself was missing.

Oh, where can it have gone?
Haven't you-hasn't anyone seen my Horn?
Oh, where can it have gone?
What a blow! Now I know
I'm unable to play my Allegro.

Who swiped that Horn?
I'll bet you a quid
Somebody did,
Knowing I'd found a concerto and wanted to play it,
Afraid of my talent at playing the Horn.
For early today to my utter dismay
it had vanished away like the dew in the mom.

I've lost that Horn—I know I was using it yesterday.
I've lost that Horn, lost that Horn, found that Horn ... gorn.
There's not much hope of getting it back though I'd willingly pay a reward.

I know some Hearty Folk whose party joke's
Pretending to hunt with the Quorn,
Gone away! Gone away! Was it one of them took it away?
Will you kindly return that Horn? Where is the devil who pinched my Horn?

I shall tell the Police I want that French Horn back.
I miss its music more and more and more.
Without that Horn I'm feeling sad and so forlorn.

I found a concerto, I wanted to play it,
Displaying my talent at playing the Horn,
But early today to my utter dismay it had totally vanished away.
I practised the Horn, and I wanted to play it but somebody took it away.
I practised the Horn and was longing to play it but somebody took it away.

My neighbour's asleep in his bed.
I'll soon make him wish he were dead.
I'll take up the Tuba instead!

That's the one. A thing called 'The road goes ever, ever on'. Donald Swann is alas no longer performing. He died about a year or two back. For those out there who liked At the Drop of A Hat/Another Hat it's worth giving the Beyond the Fringe team a listen (the show that followed Flanders and Swann in the West End when they went to Broadway). It's pretty different but fun nonetheless. Anyway, enough comedy!

Isn't it Swann who worked with JRR Tolkien on putting a batch of his songs to music? Lord only knows what happened to my 1970s vinyl, but I think my mother still has the piano scores.

A Flanders & Swann fan? From childhood! We used to stomp around singing "Mud, mud, glorious mud!" and "G'no, g'no, g'no, I'm a gnu!" until our parents considered feeding us the record player.

One of the pleasures of growing up was the slow process of deciphering the irony of songs like "The Reluctant Cannibal," at the same time as beginning to get half the jokes in Pogo.

And every now and then, when a Tom-Lehrer-fan friend starts to sing me "The Elements," I respond with the steam-train rhythm "Work is heat and heat is work!" from "The First and Second Laws."

Subject: Lyr Add: ILL WIND (M Flanders, W A Mozart)
From: Alex

It's called Ill Wind on At The Drop Of Another Hat by Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. There are a couple of bits (???) which are indistinct because of audience laughter, but it's close. ILL WIND (lyrics: Michael Flanders Music: Mozart - Horn Concerto in Eb Rondo Allegro Vivace)

I once had a whim and I had to obey it,
To buy a French Horn in a second-hand shop.
I polished it up and I started to play it
In spite of the neighbours, who begged me to stop.

To sound my horn, I had to develop my embouchure.
I found my horn was a bit of a devil to play.
So artfully wound, to give you a sound,
A beautiful sound, so rich and round.
Oh, the hours I had to spend
Before I mastered it in the end.

But that was yesterday and just today
I looked in the usual place.
There was the case but the horn, itself, was missing.
Where can it have gone?
Haven't you, hasn't anyone seen my horn?
Where can it have gone?
What a blow, now I know I'm unable to play my allegro.
Who - swiped - that - horn? (swiped=stole)
I bet you a quid somebody did. (quid=one British pound)

Knowing I'd found the concerto and wanted to play it
Afraid of my talent at playing the horn.
For early today, to my utter dismay,
It had vanished away, like the dew in the morn.

I've lost that horn, I know I was using it yesterday,
I've lost that horn, lost that horn,
Found that horn gorn. (gorn = Cockney pronounciation of gone).
There's not much I could pay
If I really (???) could pay a reward.

I know some hearty folk whose party jokes
Pretending to hunt with the corps. (???)
Gone away, gone away, was it one of them took it away?
Can you kindly return that horn.
Oh, where is the devil who pinched my-y h-horn? (pinched = stole)
I shall tell the police, I want that French Horn back.

(slowly) I miss its music more and more and more,
Without that horn, I'm feeling sad and so forlorn.
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (etc.)

I found the concerto and wanted to play it
Displaying my talent at playing the horn.
But early today, to my utter dismay,
It had totally vanished away.

I practiced the horn and I wanted to play it
But somebody took it away.
I practiced the horn and was longing to play it
But somebody took it away.

My neighbour's asleep in his bed,
I'll soon make him wish he were dead,
I'll take up the tuba instead, wah, wah.

I have the album and it is indeed the song you seek. I'll dig it out and see if I can figure out the lyrics. If no-one else has them, I'll post them later today.

Checking for Flanders & Swann on the web, I find that AT THE DROP OF ANOTHER HAT has a song titled "Sounding Brass," which seems likely. However, I haven't found online lyrics. Does anyone have this album to check?

There's a Flanders & Swann piece like that; probably off DROP OF A HAT or DROP OF ANOTHER HAT.

I vaguely remember the first & third lines of the chorus being "I lost my horn." Anyone remember?

Hi, I'm looking for the lyrics of a song on a tune by Mozart? The tune is normally played by a horn soloist (this is were my knowledge of classical music fails lamentably...), and the lyrics are a story of someone who gets a new horn, and infuriates the neighbours by playing it all the time...

If it's in the DB then sorry I didn't know where to look. Anyone recognises?

Charles
