Subject: seeking pop lyric: I Love to Love
From: balladeer
Date: 11 Feb 01 - 11:22 PM

I'm looking for the lyrics to a song titled (I think) I Love To Love. I don't know the author. If memory serves, Lena Horne sang it, backed by Lennie Hayton and orchestra, possibly on the Live At The Copa Cabana album circa late fifties. I'm hoping that someone out there has a pop background or knows a good pop site. None of the Lena sites seem to know it. Sample:

I love to love, want plenty of love each night. I love to love, it's so good it can't be right. Cherchez me, s'il vous plait me When the iron is hot, strike it. I like it, I like it, I like it.

In case that jogs anyone's memory...

Nina Simone recorded it on "Forbidden Fruit" in 1961. No lyrics yet, though.

Tina Charles apparently also recorded it.

I hit a snag - when I clickied on the song title at (I think) International Lyrics Server, all I got was a "copyright 2001 Fox agency". Wasn't Fox the agency that doesn't think lyrics should BE on the internet? Maybe they've been pulled off?

Whoo hoo, took a while, but I got them suckers!!!

I Love To Love
(Hayton Baker)

I love to love
Want plenty of love each night
Say I love to love it's so good it can't be right

I don't want a man with Harvard of Yale degrees
Because I don't intend to play information please
Just squeeze me or baby you gonna freeze me
You've got to Romeo me make feel like I'm Salomè

Don't want a man to sit there and talk too much
I just need a guy with a Frank Sinatra touch
Cos I'm tired of all the times I felt
Like a piece of butter about to melt
I wanna press your lips against mine
I wanna feel lightning tickle my spine
I want what there can never to be too much of
Yes I love to love

Just squeeze me or baby you gonna freeze me
When the iron is hot strike it
Hold me I like it I like it

Don't want a man to sit there and talk too much
I just need me a guy with a Frank Sinatra touch
Just build me an earthquake as fast as you can
I got me a hobby and my hobby is men
He's what I intend to build my collection of
Because I love to love

--Thank you to Roger Nupie for the translation of the lyrics

Wow! I'm impressed. Thanks to all - especially to you, Sorcha. But there's still stuff missing. As in, "I don't like baseball, the game's insane. What I like can't be called on account of rain." And, "Inflame me, go on and maim me." Could you dig a little deeper into that dead site, please?

Sorcha, I went to the Nina site. Thanks so much for that lead. Perhaps the rest of the ILTL lyric only exists on Lena's live album. Perhaps she was improvising those embellishments I still hear in my head - a la Frank Sinatra on Lady is a Tramp.

Balladeer.....I was thinking the same thing. Lena Horne is Lena Horne and Nina Simone is, well, not the same thing anyway.................

Too true, 'Spaw. Lena is divine and Nina is, well...scary- at least the only time I saw her live. I would have needed a change of trousers if I'd been one of her band, being in the audience was frightening enough! I still enjoy her records though.

Ignore that reference to Tina Charles - same title, different song. (I love to love, but my baby, he loves to dance)

Hi all:

I began this thread in 2001, when online shopping wasn't what it is today. I got a lot of help from you folks at that time, but we couldn't    find all the Lena lyrics. Time passed, and in 2003 I located Lena's original LP - in Germany.

Today, Paul Mills and I committed our own folkie version to posterity. We recorded I Love To Love on our first-ever Crabtree&Mills CD. Our duet is a meeting of minds between Paul's guitar and my voice - and I couldn't be more thrilled.

De gustibus non disputandum est; chaqun à son goût
[Latin: 'There's no disputing tastes'. French: 'Each to his own taste']
Which means you do what you like to do best,
it's strictly up to you.

Well, I've been around from coast to coast,
and there's only one 'chaqun', I dig the most!

I love to love need plenty of love each night,
I love to love is so good it can't be right.

Don't want a man with Harvard or Yale degrees,
I don't intend to play information please.

Squeeze me or you'll freeze me,
You've got to Romeo me, make me feel like I'm Salome.

Don't want a man to sit there and talk too much,
just need a guy with a Marlon Brando touch.

Cause I'm tired of all the times I've felt
like a piece of butter, about to melt
Want him to crush his lips against mine,
wanna feel lightnin' tickle my spine,
I want what there can never be too much of,
I love to love.

Inflame me, go on and maim me,
when the iron is hot, strike it,
Stop it! I like it! I like it!

Don't need a moon above when the magic starts,
Cupid, where'd ya get those crazy darts?

I can't stand baseball, the game's insane,
what I like can't be called on account of rain
Don't wanna be like Madame Curie,
discoverin' things means nothin' to me,
It's all been discovered in what I'm thinkin' of,
I love to love.

Cherchez me, s'il vous plait me,
gimme that real life drama,
Baby, this is Sin-o-Rama [Cinerama]

Want him to hug me, hold me, and whisper low,
don't mean for him to leave when I holler, go!
To sit me on the couch where I can't resist,
you don't have to be a psychiatrist,
Just build me an earthquake fast as you can,
I got me a hobby, my hobby is … man …,
It's what I intend to build my collection of,
Mmmmm, I love to love!

[my additions quoted from memory; it was one of myfavorite songs 50 years ago when I was a radio writer/producer! Haven't heard it since but it still is. Lena was married to bandleader Lennie Hayton]

I have it on 78 by Lena.trouble is- no player,no space and funds are low.I have not found it on the net.The lyrics above are correct as far as I remember.well done.It is the same song as the one by Nina Simone but definitely NOT the same as the one by Tina Charles! Lena's version was very hot! Maybe it has been banned by all the nouveau-puritans under the banner of "political correctness" ?

The Waldorf Astoria live version is on YouTube.
It's a fabulous version by the great late Lady Lena Horne.
Enjoy it.
