The sheet music will show up and below that are some links. Right click the link for the pdf file and you should have the sheet music file. One problem though. The music notation shows 4 sharps but then all the C, G, D notes (there are no F notes) have the natural sign so ignore the sharps and ignore the naturals and just play it in the key of C Major. It's a fairly simple tune by the look of it so hopefully you can wing it -pun intended :-) . Otherwise someone else with more ABC knowledge than me might be able to correct the ABC notation. I remember my grandfather had this record and I used to play it. I try to think who the artist was but all I can remember was 'Johnny Green and his White Mountain Boys' OR 'Johnny White and his Green Mountain Boys. I must have been about five or six but I always remembered the lyrics and the tune. Must have made a strong impression since I am now older than my grandfather was back then.... It was in the early 1920's... I also know that the record was one of the first small diameter discs. Not much bigger than a DVD disc is now. It was probably a hillbilly group performing this. |

Great song, one of very few that mention harps, appropriately for me. I sang it at a few folk clubs. Mostly it was totally new to the audience, but it certainly stirred a few of the "old-timers" who came up to me after with memories of their dad's singing this song after pub on Sunday lunchtime and suchlike. My copy is as performed by The George Mitchell Choir, but, like everything else of its period, would have been covered by half a dozen other performers and the only difference in the sheet music would have been the picture of a different artist cameoed on the cover. My old mate David 'Mick' Robinson of Hull used to sing a RN parody from WWII. He was stationed at Scapa Flow. It didn't look like Steve found any more words than Sorcha has, so maybe that's all there was. I was at the Yarra Junction Fiddler's Convention (Australia) last weekend and met an old (ish) man who was a bout tje same age as my father. We started swapping songs that we remembered from our old seventy-eights and this one came up. It sounds really nice done as an old time country style song. I still have a lot of my old seventy-eights but I'm trying to find out if anyone perfected that laser idea for playing them. What do you know? Here in Australia they are still pretty common in junk stores etc, in fact, I was at a church fete a while ago where they actually gave me a heap of them to get rid of them. When I got home there were songs by Little Richard and Gene Vincent and all sorts of great names that some people would kill for. It's a funny world. |
