I recorded the Scots travellers Cameron & Jane Turriff singing this song in unison in 1971.

My sister Maeve recorded Will the Angels Play their Harps for Me?
back in 1968 when she was very well known in Ireland on Emerald Records. She then emigrated to the USA with her husband to be Butch Moore, Irelands first entry in the Eurovision Song contest.

Ok, I'm going to stop tinkering now but I think I've fixed it.

I took out the "=" signs from the notes and also changed the key signature to G Major.

Same instructions as my previous post with the ABC notation but copy and paste this one instead into the Mandolin Tab Converter.

Oops. There are a couple of F notes, so maybe try playing it in the key of G Major.

Hi Vanessa,

You can get the sheet music with a bit of mucking about.

I went to the previous thread on this topic and scrolled down to the post by
Steve Parkes 11 May 99 - 05:09 AM

Copy the ABC notation shown here. Make sure you copy all of the lines:

X:1
T:Will the angels play their harps for me?

Go to this link:

Mandolin tab converter

Paste the ABC lines into the box and click submit.

The sheet music will show up and below that are some links. Right click the link for the pdf file and you should have the sheet music file.

One problem though. The music notation shows 4 sharps but then all the C, G, D notes (there are no F notes) have the natural sign so ignore the sharps and ignore the naturals and just play it in the key of C Major. It's a fairly simple tune by the look of it so hopefully you can wing it -pun intended :-) .

Otherwise someone else with more ABC knowledge than me might be able to correct the ABC notation.

I hope I am in time for your funeral music practice.

Helen

Hi Steve

I notice from your post that you have the sheet music for Will the angels play their harps for me. I’ve been asked to play this at a funeral service tomorrow but I can’t find a sheet music download anywhere. I’m wondering if you’d be able to email a scanned copy of the music? My email address is vanessa701@btinternet.com

It’s a long shot but thanks in anticipation

Vanessa

It's on the Jane Turriff CD. "Singin is Ma Life" on Springthyme SPRCD 1038 and the notes say she got it from her husband Cameron, who may have got it from a 78 of Music Hall singer Dick Henderson. Lovely version

My dad sand. Will I ride up to the pearly gates in glory. In a chariot of shining gold. Will I see the folks that went up there before me. When I'm safely gathered in their fold.

We never sand anything about our feet being weary or hearts being dreary but the rest is the same. I would ,over to find a copy of this.

WILL THE ANGELS PLAY THEIR HARPS FOR ME?
(D. White / Hirsch)

Josef Locke

I was passing by the churchyard in the city
and I saw a beggar old and grey.
With his hands outstretched he asked the folks for pity,
and it made me sad to hear him say:

Oh I wonder, yes I wonder, will the angels way up yonder
will the angels play their harps for me?
For my heart is growing dreary and my feet are growing weary.
Will the angels play their haprs for me?

Oh a million miles I've travelled, and a million sights I've seen
and I'm ready for the glory soon to be.
Oh I wonder, yes I wonder, will the angels way up yonder
will the angels play their harps for me?

Oh I wonder, yes I wonder, will the angels way up yonder
will the angels play their harps for me?

Oh my heart is growing dreary, and my feet are growing weary
will the angels play their harps for me?

Oh a million miles I've travelled, and a million sights I've seen
and I'm ready for the glory soon to be.
Oh I wonder yes, I wonder, will the angels way up yonder
will the angels play their harps for me?

Will the angels play their harps for me?

I have looked for mention of this song for years. I love it. I remember my grandfather had this record and I used to play it. I try to think who the artist was but all I can remember was 'Johnny Green and his White Mountain Boys' OR 'Johnny White and his Green Mountain Boys.
I must have been about five or six but I always remembered the lyrics and the tune. Must have made a strong impression since I am now older than my grandfather was back then.... It was in the early 1920's... I also know that the record was one of the first small diameter discs. Not much bigger than a DVD disc is now. It was probably a hillbilly group performing this.

I found this thanks to Bob Fish at a UK Autoharps Day. Great song, one of very few that mention harps, appropriately for me. I sang it at a few folk clubs. Mostly it was totally new to the audience, but it certainly stirred a few of the "old-timers" who came up to me after with memories of their dad's singing this song after pub on Sunday lunchtime and suchlike. This link lets you hear Frank Luther and his pards singing it.

Indiana University gives the following description of the sheet music:

WILL THE ANGELS PLAY THEIR HARPS FOR ME?
Words by Walter Hirsch. Music by Monte Wilhite.
Chicago: Ted Browne Music Co. Inc., 1928.

First line of verse: I was passing by the churchyard in the city and I saw a beggar old and gray
First line of chorus: Oh I wonder, yes I wonder, will the angels way up yonder, will the angels play their harps for me?

WorldCat.org says there is also a copy in Brigham Young University Library.

Okay, original sheet music in front of me.
Words Walter Hirsch
Music, Monte White
Pub. Keith Prowse Music Co. Inc. 1928

The text above is almost correct.
The last 4 lines of the chorus are the second verse.
The 'heart' and 'feet' lines need swapping.

My copy is as performed by The George Mitchell Choir, but, like everything else of its period, would have been covered by half a dozen other performers and the only difference in the sheet music would have been the picture of a different artist cameoed on the cover.

My old mate David 'Mick' Robinson of Hull used to sing a RN parody from WWII. He was stationed at Scapa Flow.

Oh I wonder, yes, I wonder, did the Jaunty make a blunder,
When he made this draft chit out for me.
For a million miles I've travelled and a million sights I've seen,
And I've always said good morning to the chief.
(Spoken..Good morning, Chief, you old bastard!)

Oh, I've been a barrack stanchion
An' I've lived at Jago's mansion
And I always got my morning cup of tea.
Oh I wonder, yes, I wonder, did the Jaunty make a blunder,
When he made this draft chit out for me.

(Apologies for possible spelling errors. I'm not familiar with the lingo.)

Hi:

The version my Dad sang in the 30's didn't have the lines about the feet growing weary in the chorus.

After the chorus he sang "Will I ride up to the pearly gates of glory,.... in the fold. Oh, a million miles I've travelled and amillion.....soon to be." followed by the chorus.

My Dad has been gone for 55 years now and every time I sing that song it brings tears to my eyes.

Thanks for the memories.

Thamks folks. I found that earlier trace after I posted the request. It didn't look like Steve found any more words than Sorcha has, so maybe that's all there was. I was at the Yarra Junction Fiddler's Convention (Australia) last weekend and met an old (ish) man who was a bout tje same age as my father. We started swapping songs that we remembered from our old seventy-eights and this one came up. It sounds really nice done as an old time country style song. I still have a lot of my old seventy-eights but I'm trying to find out if anyone perfected that laser idea for playing them. What do you know? Here in Australia they are still pretty common in junk stores etc, in fact, I was at a church fete a while ago where they actually gave me a heap of them to get rid of them. When I got home there were songs by Little Richard and Gene Vincent and all sorts of great names that some people would kill for. It's a funny world.

I've been trying to find an old song that my father sang, I think it's from the thirties. The bit I can remember says:

I was passing by a churchyard in the city
When I saw a feller old and grey
With his hand outstretched he asked the folks for pity
And it made me sad to hear him say
Oh I wonder yes I wonder willthe angels way up yonder
Will the angels play their harps for me
For a million miles I've travelled and a million sights I've seen
And I'm ready for the glory soon to be
Oh I wonder yes I wonder will the angels way up yonder
Will the angels play their harps for me.

Does anyone know the rest?
