Can anyone supply biog info on Tom Hickland formerly of Five Hand Reel. I know he is from Belfast and wrote the music for Florence Wilson's "Man from God Knows where", which is why I am keen to find out more about hum

Big Tim,

You may check out Dick Gaughan's website (I managed to get to it by putting Dick Gaughan on the alta vista search engine and it came right up). I recall he was mentioning in the recordings section some information about the various five hand reel members. I remember being in London in 1977 when For A' That was released and seeing the band at the Marquee club. I was bowled over by how good the whole band was. That night Tom sang "P Stands for Paddy" and "Maid of Listowell." Not to mention the fiddling. That should give you a little more information.

There was a thread on - I think - uk.music.folk recently where Dick gave a brief summary of whatb he knows about the other 5HR members. I can't remember what he said about Tom Hickland, only that there was one guy who hadn't been heard of for some time.

Phil. thnaks, I knew most of that but good to hear about live performance, I never saw the band live, just BE and DG solo. I've been in touch with someone at QUB whose neighbour was at school with TH, if I hear anything I will post it. All the best, Tim.

I have only just discovered this site and was amazed to find so much interest in both "the man from God knows where" and myself. The poem I had known from childhood in Belfast and I regard the whole piece as the greatest musical achievement of my professional career. It was met with mediocre reviews at the time, which was probably to do with the fact that the views of many people where clouded by the fact that the unmistakable musical talents of Dick Gaughan were no longer with the band and a certtain opinion prevailed that we could not exist without him. It is pleasing that there are people out there, who appreciate it, even if it is 25 years on.
As for me, I am a primary school teacher in SW London and get a lot of pleasure out of getting young children to perform musically to a level that other local schools can only dream about. Some people expressed a desire to contact me. my email address is tomhickland@yahoo.co.uk

Tom, Good to see you surface. Glad to see you're putting your musical skills to good use with the kids.
