Still puzzled as to how Chatroom works..go there, but get nothing..something about Null Point Ext at bottom of Screen, and something about Applechat loading..I am a novice at this..anyone enlighten me? You can use my personal page, or here if you wish. I do recall a few weeks ago others were having probs too..are they just working out some bugs?

Seems to work pretty well for me now, Gary. I think the main thing is that if you've had "chat" problems in the past, you have to get rid of corrupted or faulty chat session pages by clearing your "internet files" folder (copies of pages you've visited, stored on your hard drive). there's a way to clear it under "opitions" on Microsoft Internet Explorer - don't recall how to do it on Netscape. Sometimes, expecially if you get dumped from "chat,' you can get back in by hitting the "reload" button on your browser. Good luck.

It is worth it to keep trying. The folks who show up to chat are always (IMHO) friendly and a pleasure to chat with. The other problem is being alone in the chat room. Only slightly better than solitare with 51 cards. Keep going and "they" will come.

I just want to know who the Bartender is.

It's me, Max. For the chatroom, I have programmed a digital clone to keep tabs on the situation. The only difference between me and him is that he is always logical.

I've never seen anyone in the chatroom, except for the bartender, and he is not at all chatty!

Yeah, Max you need to program that Bartender to chat when we visit there. I can't even get an order filled, I go there and the bartender says hi and I order one burbon, one scotch and one beer but I don't ever get 'em. What's up?

It's your choice of drinks, Elwood. Ours is a very high-class bartender. He'll never mix scotch with anything......

Is anyone ever in the chatroom here? I've looked and have ever only seen 0 people in chatroom. Have even gone in to make sure and, sure enough, there's only Max and me. Hmmmm...there's only ever Max and me....not very grammatical attractive, but maybe there's an idea for a song...

It takes strategy, Rosebrook. Watch who's posting messages, and then you can tell who's online. Then send them a "get someone's attention" message. It's still a hit-or-miss proposition, but that does increase your chances.

Does anyone know who wrote "You Were on My Mind" back in the sixties? I think it was Peter, Paul and Mary, but haven't been able to confirm this? Thanks in advance for your help.

Ian & Sylvia =>the famous Canadian duo from the 60's - Ian Tyson and Sylvia Fricker. Check out on "Ian & Sylvia's Greatest Hits" on Vanguard CD; VCD-5/6. I saw it at Borders' bookstore last night; cover picture is different (I like it better) than my CD, aquired last year, but the songs are apparently the same.

Cheers, BK

Dear jhmelody, and BK,

Thought "You Were On My Mind" deserved a thread of its own; gave it one.

You're welcome,

Seems like this thread is a chat room to me. That's ok, it's just that most tof what we're doing here is chatting in slow motion. If we would hop into the chatroom as soon as we log in we would have real "chat." Don't get me wrong I really like the threads here, OBVIOUSLY, but lots of our postings are chatty! ENOUGH, I quit.

I am really a novice at chat rooms. I go there and find only the Mudcat Cafe logo and the words "Chat Room" What more do I need to do?

I even spent a half hour in the chatroom typing a blues song to the bartender and nobody else even knocked oin the door.

Thought I'd given up on this thread?..Not yet!..This is many months later, but wondering what is the status of the chatroom now?..While I'm at it, who can use it? & can someone on AOL come up on it and meet me?.. If not, do any of you know where such a meeting is easy to do without downloading AOL software?..Gary

HINT---every browser allows you to open a 2nd window(or 3rd & 4th maybe)...so, if you think you might have time to chat...go to Mudcat, then open 2nd browser and go into the chatroom...that way you are shown as being there to anyone else who comes by....and you can continue reading threads and posting neat stuff and flip to the chatroom every little bit to see if anyone has found you...I have gotten a couple of chats that way

We'll give it a shot, Bill..Although not right now..I'm on short time.. Thanks for the input. Anyone out there give me info on my AOL friend situation? I know I can use AOL, but their suggestion to download their software doesn't sit well with me. When I was on AOL, their files were so invasive, I couldn't get my computer to do much without going through THEM all the time & it was incredibly slow ..took a while to delete all of their stuff. Can someone on AOL get away from them & Chat with those who aren't? Sounds like a stupid question, but I am still a novice to this stuff. Thanks..Gary

Actually, I use a great little program called ICQ. You can get it here:

http://www.mirabilis.com

It's free, and it works like an AOL "buddy list" except for anyone on the internet who also uses ICQ. (And yes, it should work for AOL users too.

It has realtime messaging (like IM), private chats are *easy* and you can send files, URLs, and play games as well -- all while you're still doing OTHER things, if your computer can handle it.

As to the chat room here, you just have to sign up as a member. It's pretty slow and I've never seen it handle more than three people at a time. (Which is, of course, PLENTY unless you're an IRC Junkie.)

Not to cast aspersions on Max, who has of course done a *FINE* job. ;^)

Good luck!

yes, you can go 'thru' AOL to chat with others in various chat rooms...but you ALWAYS have AOL's border surrounding you...and you are at the mercy of their browser, which is a thinly disguised Internet Explorer, and their availability, which is often spotty...I would NEVER use AOL unless I lived in the sticks where there was no other choice...they are slow, expensive, don't allow you very many newsgroups, hassle you with ads, and filter what they want you to see...almost everything on the NET except their inbred little chat groups (which are usually full) is available somewhere else.

And electra is right...ICQ & IRC are great ways to meet and chat...singly , or in groups..(as is POWWOW). ICQ and POWWOW are similar...IRC is different, and a 'bit' trickier...ICQ & IRC actually allow you to see others as they type...backspaces, partial thoughts & all....IRC has a lot of chatrooms, plus the ability to define your own... and 2 years ago, I knew NOTHING about any of this...

for those who are 'power users', you can even have sound and cameras as you chat...I guess we could easily sing these songs to each other and demonstrate guitar chords, if we all had fast enough machines and had the need...just wait 10 years!!Online Hootenannies!!

Dear God! That would be great! Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give them a try. Cindy is moving back to Minnesota next summer, and I'm going to try to get her to dump AOL & go with a user friendly local server like mine.

Incidentally, I'm amused that my server is actually a local coffee house called CyberBean which instead of entertaining folks with musicians, offers computers & the internet to play with!... My, how times change! (To be fair, they do offer a Jazz night)... Gary
