Subject: The ability to Laugh at YOURSELF!
From: GUEST,Marty D.
Date: 15 Feb 01 - 05:37 PM

The missus and I were discussing how we've managed to happily tolerate each other for these many years, and what the 'secret ingedient' might be. After much throwing around things like 'similar interests, sense of humor, respecting each other's space, being in love' etc. we've come down down to this: We can both LAUGH AT OURSELVES.

Sometimes it's funny to see how some of our Mudcat friends avoid unpleasant situations with a little self-deprecation, and others get sooo testy sooo quickly.

I thought it might be interesting to find out who really thinks they can laugh at themselves without losing face. You know, maybe you're being a bit pedantic and someone calls you on it, or you like one kind of music and someone else absolutely HATES it! Or you're a Democrat, and a Republican says you're full of hot air. Or You're a 'believer' and an agnostic tries to get your goat. That kind of thing. Even when someone starts a thread you think is stupid (like this?). Anyway, can you laugh before you get mad?

Marty

Marty,

I don't find this to be a stupid thread. It is just along the lines I was hoping when I opened it. Being able to laugh at yourself is very important, atleast in my life it is.

To be honest, I am usually laughing so hard at myself that I am unable to get mad. Even when the rare occasion arrises that I get a little miffed over something I am still laughing and lose the reason why I was out of sorts in a very short time.

Thanks for helping us to look at ourselves in a way that we usually don't even think about. Laughter is the best thing I know for almost any situation short of a funeral and I've been to many of those where laughter was a great ingredient and a blessed relief.

I don't think I'm very funny but I have a hard time not laughing especially when I tell a joke. Now, there are a lot of you who make me laugh, and I love to laugh. Actually after the selfdeprecation and embarassment, I usually laugh at my stupidity. What else can you do?

Marty, this damn thread is completely screwed! What the hell is the matter with you anyway? This is a folk and blues site and yet you persist in posting tripe such as this!!! Get a life!! There are really important issues and research being discussed here you know? Or maybe you don't care what the third word in the second line of the 92nd verse of "Diddle My Fiddle" is, but a lot of us do and this crap of yours is taking up valuable bandwidth.

What's the point of it anyway? Just how is this supposed to have anything to do with folk music? You're another one of those inner-clique wannabes and that whole crew is the ruination of this fine site. If you have a question of merit, ask it. Otherwise I suggest you take this kind of posting somewhere else so that we can focus on the true meaning of Carrickfergus.

Now I, to get back to our muttons, have no sense of humour whatsoever as a quick check of my postings would tell you...and am famed near and far as a person of sober and respectable demeanour who applies with a light, but steady hand, the gentle applique of reason into all the froth and trivia that go on here.

Who, ME?

Actually, I got mad at someone on another forum once, because I thought that he wasn't respecting a serious idea that I had posted. I was worried that he would take that same attitude elsewhere if he wasn't given a response like "Ouch! You stepped on my foot! Get off!"

He responded very well, and even though the mods asked me to calm down, I was already calm about it. And now, I understand the other person a lot more than if I hadn't said "Ouch!" and had just gone away feeling put down.

So sometimes laughing at yourself isn't the best thing you can do.

I learned how to laugh at myself out of self defense. My father was one who would sense a serious lack of humor about one's self, and be all over it. He was persistant to the point of making me so mad I'd be near tears. My mother taught me (I must have been about 6 years old) how to deal with this - be able to laugh with him, give him a hard (but humorous) time right back, or ignore it. I normally opted for the first or second thing - the third didn't often work. (He just kept going anyway, and I couldn't keep my mouth shut that long.)

Marty, I don't know if it's being able to laugh at one's self as much as what's behind it - humility. People who take themselves very seriously are hard to get along with - you never know when you might accidentally insult them.

Laughing at yourself, what a way to get rid of tension, I set my self up to be laughed at, as well as teasing others. I work in an office with a crowd that are about half my age, and boy do I like to tease them, but I get as good as I give. It makes for a friendlier work place. Quote from the last line of a pay review letter I received. Thanks for all your hard work - and for keeping the troops entertained. Just shows even the bosses notice an happy environment.

Jeez Paw, give the guy a break! I happen to know he's a Doc Watson fan, and probably doesn't even KNOW the hidden meanings in Carrickfergus. But that's the problem isn't it? YOU'VE just never been able to laugh at yourself! Personally, I go into hysterics at the mention of your name.

However.....it's a good point. After all, I've used the term "nurd knowledge" for virtually everything I've ever learned about folk-music, or life, for as long as I can remember. I DO get mad at times but only if I think some other person has been knowingly vicious...but NEVER if I think there was a possiblity they might have been joking (and I just didn't get it) or they just don't have social skills. I think some folks can only operate when they're in defensive mode. I mean there are whole industries that have sprung up with people just LOOKING to be offended.

Take music for example: I absolutely LOVE Dylan, the Beatles, early Elvis, Freddie Mercury, and many current bands. Some of my "trad" friends, have absolutely NO use (and naturally no real knowledge) of those musicians, so I could take it personally if someone I care about completely denigrates them. Or I could rant on about my devoting literally every waking hour to loving or playing or learning about folk music and folk musicians...but what would be the point? To me, arguments should ONLY be about life and death issues......AND THE BLUE JAYS! Our time here is just too damn short.

Rick

Great post, Rick. Oh, by the way, the Blue Jays stink!

Hee! Hee!

:-D

Getting back to the original subject of this thread, I have a fairly easy time laughing at myself when on Mudcat, because I guess I feel fairly safe on Mudcat most of the time.

I have a pretty hard time laughing at myself in real life, however. I am more inclined to criticize myself unmercifully. Not good.

I find that people in real life can be rather dangerous to my state of mind, but not so much on Mudcat. Not that Mudcat is not real, but it's at arm's length. And I can go offline any time I want to if it starts to get to me. It's optional. Many other connections are not.

I feel that if I can't find the humor in the silly things I do. I shouldn't allow myself to find the humor in the silly things others do. In other words, If I can accept my shortcomings, I can accept the shortcomings of others. This philosophy makes for a much better day.

If you Folks want to have a good laugh on me just ask Sorcha, Naemanson, Nynia, and Max about some correspondence we had recently about failed communications. What a dummy I can be sometimes, but this anecdote might save other new Mudcatters from experiencing the same frustration I had.

Interesting thought, Spaw.

Last time we went to the Newmarket Coffeehouse, flattop and I had a comptetition to see who would get hit on the most. We assigned point values to different kinds of people. I would get 5 points if the owner of the place hit on me, and 50 points if a Scotsman hit on me. Everyone else would be 1 point. flattop would get 50 points if a (female) professional skater hit on him, and one point for everyone else.

flattop got hit on by two women at the gas station. He claims they were young women, but I didn't see them. So he started off two points ahead of me. By the end of the night, I was ahead, six to two.

I got my fifty points a week ago Monday. "Johnny Death", a Scotsman who goes to the Orillia song circle hit on me in the Tim Horton's where we gathered after song circle was over. That was after I asked him what he thought of the anus as a w/hole. flattop said I shouldn't be gentle with Johnny. I didn't realize at the time that flattop was trying to set me up with him.

I'm always laughing at myself, usually because I have fallen over, or tripped up somewhere, or banged into a lampost, dropped a load of things, or come out with something, which has a double meaning.,.... before I know what I am saying...

Fell over in the Louvre once, right smack bang in the middle of a rather lovely set of marble steps, in one of the grand open rooms.

WIth loads of people around me, I fell UP!! the steps.

Just sat down and laughed..

I am accident prone...

Woody Allen has made a career out of self-deprecating humor, and it's interesting that people seem so divided in their opinions regarding his humor, in other words, you either like him or you don't, not much middle ground.

Perhaps there are two camps; those that have the ability to laugh at themselves and those that don't.

Perhaps there are three camps; those that have the ability to laugh at themselves, those that don't and those that feel guilty about laughing at themselves.

Myself,.. I prefer to smerk.

I definitely DON'T possess that ability. If someone gets at me I get really edgy and I don't mind admitting it! Even my boyfriend agrees with me!!!!!!

I usually defend myself by saying that it's a defence mechanism from school because I was perpetually bullied, and I now find it hard to tell if people are joking or being serious when they're teasing me!

Martha Stewart came in for a little flack in another thread but she went up a few notches in my opinion when she invited the 'Martha Stewart' from Saturday Night Live as her guest.

It was a great show and if you love OR hate Martha Stewart you shouldn't miss it. Seeing the two of them side by side with the real Martha taking it with a smile was great.

I can laugh at myself most of the time these days, though it wasn't always like that. I can relate to firecat's school experiences. :`P

What *always* gets my goat is injustice. Man, I boil over faster than a raindrop in a lavaflow! LOL! Just the other day my partner's daughter was telling us about this "cruel" teacher who forced them to use rubber bands to tie their (longish) hair into pony tails, and how it hurt. My blood began to boil. I said, "That's not right! Boy that makes me mad!" and was just about to get into a really hot rant about the school systems, when she interrupted me to say it was a "Tech Ed" class, and explain that "Tech Ed" is what we used to call "shop". A pretty dangerous place for kids with long hair!

LOL! I was laughing at myself that time!

If there are two camps regarding Woody Allen's humour, is this what is known as camp humour?? I think the ability NOT to take yourself seriously all the time helps to relieve the stress of those times when you DO need to take yourself seriously about issues that are important to you and your immediate family and friends

Hi "Guest, Mike Putt". You said:

Catspaw has been making a SUPERHUMAN effort to get us back on the straight and narrow. Like you, I'm gonna try like hell to follow his good example!

Hi Bert. I agree. Martha has a reputation as a bit of an ogre, but she definitely DOES have the ability to laugh at her most distinguishing characteristics...which makes her OK in my book.

Well, we all had a lot of fun laughing at LH in Newmarket yesterday. He was invited to play harmonica with Rick during the set, and wasn't too bad!

I don't laugh at myself, because I couldn't tell a joke well, even to save my life!

For what it's worth, the voluable Mr. Hawk, who may be a thorn in the side of some, was a "rose" on stage. He has the ability to "listen" when he plays with someone else. T'is a rare quality. And that ain't no laughin' matter!

As usual I was completely wrong in how I pictured Mudcatters actually looking. Thought "the hawk" would be a Randy Bachman clone...possibly an ex-biker type. He ain't.

Pictured Hesperis as a sort of large "Earth-Mother" draped in yards of silk. Whew! I've never been more wrong!

Saw a picture of Carol C. but she's prettier.

Didn't know Flatop was six two with muttonchop sideburns, but he carries them well.

Regarding this entertaining thread: Today I'm laughing at my inability to get off my ass and do a few chores. Ha, Ha, I'm a lazy sod! Why is Heather not laughing as much?

Yeah, funny allright! There is no doorframe that flattop has to worry about hitting his head on when he passes through it...except maybe in Hobbiton (for you Lord of the Rings fans).

Me a Randy Bachmann clone? Ha! Ha! Ha! It would take probably four of me to equal the weight of Randy Bachmann. Rick didn't look quite like what I expected either...I thought he was going to look like Steve McKeown for some reason (half of the Ontario duo "Even Steven"), but he doesn't look too much like that.

It was indeed a great treat to play harmonica with Rick Fielding. The man is a superb folk performer with an enormous repertoire. He did what I would call a mostly "trad" set...some songs I had not heard in many years, such as "Ring Tail Tom", and some gospel numbers, all really old stuff. I originally heard "Ring Tail Tom" on a Vanguard recording of some jug band, as I recall...Jim Kweskin or something?

As for Rick's guitar playing? Deadly. The man must do nothing but practice in his spare time. Yeeesh.

OK, I have to come clean here. (and laugh at myself, of course) Flatop is not six two with muttonchop sideburns. He/she's really a very attractive silver haired lady of indeterminate age.

Ya know, after just reading another thread where a deliciously ironic post was actually taken seriously by several people....I better stop kiddin' around altogether.

There IS no Flatop.

LH, thanks for the nice words. Oh, and ya you're right...very trad set. Sometimes when I start, I have no idea what direction it's going.

A mattock it like a pickax. It has an pick on one end and a flat curved section on the other end. See here for pics (no pun intended).

Yes, Thorin's cousin Dain, from the Iron Hills, brought over 500 grim drawf warriors, clothed in a short hauberk, fine mail on their legs, a steel helm on their heads. They had small bucklers slung at their backs, weilded large double handed mattocks, and had small short swords at their sides. Their beads were forked, plaited, and thrust into their belts. And their faces were grim.

But that's just from memory.

Folks,

If you can't laugh at yourself, how is anyone else gonna know that you are real? I laugh at myself because I make silly mistakes all the time. I guess it's a form of self-forgivenss and that allows me to forgive others. When something's funny I just have to laugh.

There is nothing humorous in being a middle aged menopausal female. Chin hairs are not humorous. Searching for one's keys while carrying them around with you is not humorous. Calling your cats by dead cats' names is not humorous. Rising blood pressure and falling boobs are not humorous. Thinking you are being followed on a dark street only to realize that the sound is the sound of your corduroy encased thighs squishing is not humorous. Have I made my point?

I write and sing (hopefully) humourous songs. I use the humour to hide a not too brilliant voice. When people are laughing, they aren't thinking "he's got a voice like a bullfrog". I find that people laugh the most at songs where I am making fun of myself. Maybe its because I feel more comfortable making a fool of myself rather than having a go at someone else. It is a good way of keeping your feet on the ground - looking at what you do that is daft, stupid, pathetic, etc.

Well, I consider humor a serious business. Therefore, I have a hard time laughing at myself when I'm being funny. However, when I'm being serious, I find myself absolutely hilarious. This has lead to some interesting incidents of what some might call "inappropriate laughter" on my part, and several attempts by members of my immediate family to have me restrained. Apparently, some people just can't take a joke.

Hey, Dunc I try to put humour into my songs, too. But don't you find that people assume that you're not serious about 'the music' (Maaaan!) just because you happen to have included some observation on life, and tried to put a humourous slant on it? Sorry I'm not singing about being destroyed by drugs, or feeling so heartbroken that I can't breathe. I'd rather sing about the time I was so heartbroken that I got really angry and kicked someone in the head (in an amusing self-mocking way, obviously!) tiggerdooley
