The very bawdy version "THE TRAVELER" in Rugby Songs (recapitulated in The Hash Hymnal) has six verses and but the time you've (or, at least, I've,) sung six your audience wouldn't want any more. It has a very interesting aspect in that the husband is also unfaithful. But still a drunken fool.

Child's 'A' version is, I believe, the first ever collected - and my favorite (MacColl is the only I've heard sing it - with spoken dialog in the refrain) also has six verses. The 'B' version has a full seven.

I wouldn't make too much of this. As said above there are many versions and countless things he sees in the house. There are never any "missing" verses, just different versions. I've heard excellent versions with only three nights.

I think this is one of the very rare Child ballads that developed a blues version. At least I can't think of any others.

It isn't on any of the Corries albums I have, nor did I ever hear them do it live but for a definitive answer look at the webpage www.corries.com maintained by Ronnie Browne's son ,Gavin, which has songbooks, discography, re-releases, news of Ronnie's performance dates etc. Gavin is very helpful if you need information.

I agree about the intro: I think the Dubliners did it on More of The Hardstuff. Ronnie Drew itros the song by saying, "This song is called The Seven Drunken Nights" un fortunately we are only allowed to sing about five of them."

I alsp don't believe The Corries ever recorded it. They did record Maids When You're Young which I believe the Dubliners did about the same time.

As far as the two remaining nights are concerned, make up your own. The more vulgar the better. Most people I know have.

As MMario pointed out, this song has been discussed many times here, and a good few additional "nights" have been posted in various threads; these may be found by doing a search of the site as he suggested.  Even I don't feel like trawling through them all and providing shortcuts!

Maybe the guy in the song doesn't come back home drunk EVERY night but keeps two Sober Nights a week. Or maybe his wife doesn't betray him EVERY night but keeps two Fidelity Nights a week.

That intro of which you speak is the Dubliners. I don't think the Corries ever recorded 7 Drunken Nights. I asked Ronnie Drew once about the other two nights and he told me there were only five--at least as far he was concerned. I have heard verses--of the other two nights over the years and I think people just made them up themselves. Nothing wrong with that.

there are a bunch of versions of this song. You can find it in the DT under "our Goodman" - and at least a couple discussions of it in the forum. I would try "nights drunk" in the digitrad and forum search box on the main page.

I have and also heard the recording seven drunken nights by the Corries. They preface it with something like "this is a song called 7 drunken nights but we're only allowed to sing 5 of them" Are there really two more verses or is it 5 drunken nights? Any help would be appreciated
