Subject: What song do you finish with? From: Hawker Date: 16 Feb 01 - 09:47 PM Hi, I have just come home from a VERY LOUD musicains entertainment at our local pub (yes we did do a bit of after hours!) He described himself as folk with attitude - well er yes! Some was good some was bad some made me feel indifferent and all was LOUD, but he did get the whole pub to join in. He finished up with that nauseous old favourite "Show me the way to go home" and I say nauseous 'co usually if my old man has got to singing that he is..... and he was.....twice I had to stop the car on the way home (NO I don't drink & drive) anyway it got me thinking, we usually finish with 'The Farewell shanty@ at our gigs what do you people wind up your gigs with? Have a great weekend everybody, Love peace & Happiness!!!! Lucy |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Melani Date: 16 Feb 01 - 09:57 PM Which farewell chantey? We seem to be locked in to "Leave Her Johnny", though there have been some valient attempts in the past to try something different I guess it needs to be something with a repeating chorus, so people who don't know it can join in. |

Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: kendall Date: 16 Feb 01 - 10:24 PM I like to "finish up" with Bolero. I like to start with Bolero. For a gig, I often finish with Rolling Home. Or with something funny. |

Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Kara Date: 16 Feb 01 - 10:36 PM I usually aim to end on " Farewell to Whiskey", but often find that half waythough a gig the set list goes out the window and we do what we like. Next moth I am playing a couple of dates with my great friends " Mary Hail and the willing Sinners" and I don't think we will even have a set list? As we see each other so rarley and know so many tunes together, we tend to practice the new ones before a gig , and then spend the evening saying " hey do you remenber that one that goes diddley diddely diddely di" at which every one starts playing. A set list can look a bit stupid with diddley di written all down it. |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque from Maine Date: 16 Feb 01 - 10:48 PM Depends.... At campfire circles at reenactments and the like, I traditionally like to wind up with "Amazing Grace". Most of us seem to know it, and it seems to invoke a certain blessing of peace as the fires burns low and we wend our way to the tents. Now on the other hand if there is a sufficiency of ardent spirits going around and the young buckaroos have plenty of steam left, a Hymn is NOT what they want to hear, and chances are that the surrounding woods will be ringing to heroic verses of "Beer and Tobacco" and "One Ball Rielly" long after I have given up to exhaustion and crawled into my dog-tent for a couple hours of blissful coma before "Drummers' Call" is beat (@ about 0530)for us Musicians to take the field for the "Reville" ceremony. I have been learning "Parting Glass" over the Winter, thanks largely to this Mudcat, and will probably be using that a lot more in the future - a'capella or on tin whistle or open-holed low-"G" walnut flute I made. A little less "spiritual", perhaps, but I play to and with all sorts of crowds, and it seems most approprite to some. Another in the nautical vein which might be nice is "Fiddler's Green" - but I'd be hesitant to use it in a paying gig as it is of recent composition and not "public domain" as the preceeding two. "So Long, It's Been Good t' Know Ya"... "Happy Trails" (Roy Rodgers) Whoever that "Artist" was, if his performance inspired the audience to such gastric distress as you imply, one could only describe his music as "emetic". Of course, in some venues (England comes to mind), that could become immensely popular, I suppose. How should one end such a concert? Quickly, I would hope! |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Deckman Date: 16 Feb 01 - 10:53 PM Often, depending on the scene, I enjoy closing a concert with "Parting Glass." CHEERS, Bob (deckman) Nelson |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: katlaughing Date: 16 Feb 01 - 10:54 PM Don't do any gigs, but when I sing on PalTalk, it's kind of become traditional for me to close with Prairie Lullaby, depending on who is in there and how much I have been singing. It's been a while. Parting Glass is really beautiful.

Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Sarah2 Date: 16 Feb 01 - 11:05 PM It depends entirely upon what we're playing during the gig: If it's general folk, we finish with "The Mary Ellen Carter" or "What You Do with What You've Got" or some such. Saint Patrick's we almost always wind up with "The Wearin' of the Green." Hogmanay or any Scottish celebration, well, there's a traditional "must sing," isn't there? Sometimes it depends on the crowd, too. If they're older, I like to leave them with a song they remember from their own salad days, like "Sentimental Journey." So I guess I have a clutch of "enders" and just pick the one that seems to fit the circumstance. Sarah |

Subject: Lyr Add: SONG ABOUT LIFE (Robert Oneman Johnson) From: reggie miles Date: 17 Feb 01 - 02:53 AM They usually just stop me in mid song and tell me to get out while I still can cause they're locking up. I never seem to get a chance to do all the music I really enjoy in any given evening's performance. There's just not enough time. Of course my tendency of late to droll on and on between songs probably has a little something to do with my lack. One song comes to mind when I think of endings. It's called Song About Life written, as so much of what I perform is, by my very good friend Robert Oneman Johnson. She's a rough one, first it's there and then it's gone. It's a tough one, but you've got to keep on keepin' on. Life's a treat if you don't weaken, and let the bastards beat you down. She's a rough one, but she's the only one around. I've got a secret, I'm gonna share it here with you. Have no regrets. Just keep on doin' what you do. Cuz if you're doin' what you want to, when they finally lower you down, it might've been a rough one but she's the only one around. Life is short and it's seldom sweet and it sometimes makes you mad. But when it's gone you're gonna realize, it was the only chance you had. So just enjoy it and hope that the others like theirs too. Don't destroy it, cuz nothin's gained by feelin' blue. If you're laughin' and you're gigglin', about the way the world went round. If you're doing what you want to, when they finally lower you down. And if you grin while all those bastards, try their best to beat you down. It might've been a rough one but she's the only one around. It might've been a tough one but she's the only game in town. |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Mr Red Date: 17 Feb 01 - 04:56 AM I like Wild Mountain Time for a climax. With pauses in the right places it can smutticize a lovely song. It is such pretty song - or so I thought till one day I recorded the last song of the night. It was a crackin version of W M T. Hmmmmm. Next day I played back what was a bunch of alcos slurring through a durge. |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Sarah the flute Date: 17 Feb 01 - 07:32 AM Well it does depend on the event really doesn't it. The parting glass is a fav but with our singing trio we often do the Janet Russell one "All the tunes in the world" With the boys we do a fast irish medley culminating in Jennys Chickens. And if one needed a smutty (surely not) version of the Wild Mountain Time then I'm afraid the Kippers have that one covered with the infamous Wild Mounting Time !!! |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE FAREWELL SHANTY From: Hawker Date: 17 Feb 01 - 08:56 AM It's really interesting to hear what you all end with.... Spaw, I knew someone wouldn't be able to resist the temptation to lower the tone - but as you have on that thread, it depends in what the music was at the start, how long the recording is and how passionate the experience! Ho Hum... Melani, THE FAREWELL SHANTY is...
It's time to go now
Put her sails upon her
Feel the seas run under
Set her on her course now
When my days are over Sorry, can't tell you who wrote it, may be in the database, haven't looked, sure someone out there can give credit where credit due?
Happy singing and fond farewells!

Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Hawker Date: 17 Feb 01 - 07:37 PM My Husband has just told me that Farewell shanty was discovered by the late Mervyn Vincent of St Issey, Padstow, Cornwall, in Plymouth Library whilst looking up old books about ships and sailing. It was either written in a book or a manuscript within the cover of the book. It is attributed as traditional, and was recorded by Johnny Collins on his album The Travellers Rest. According to the sleve notes on that record, Johnny collins learned it from Alan Molyneaux of Plymouth (Breakwater Folk Club?) It was always used to finish Mervyn's GREAT Stable Loft Folk Club at Wadebridge, Cornwall (sadly no longer in existence).............So there you have it - clever clogs my husband....unless you know otherwise......... Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: John P Date: 18 Feb 01 - 08:07 AM We finish with something that is high-energy or intense, and that seems to cap off the feeling we have been creating throughout both the set and the evening as a whole. We tend to go for musical intensity rather than "goodbye, we're leaving" kind of words. This sort of thing is dependant on the arrangement rather than the song itself, but here are some we've been using: Hangman The Two Ravens Trois Pelerins/La Rotta The True Lover's Farewell/The Apes of Hell Nottamun Town The Sprig of Thyme More cynically, we finish with whatever song we currently think will be most likely to cause people to come up and buy a CD. Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Naemanson Date: 18 Feb 01 - 08:29 AM We always try to end with something bright and energetic. Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Mrs.Duck Date: 18 Feb 01 - 03:51 PM Up at Whitby folk week in the Tap and Spile and anywhere the same crowd congregate we finish with John Tams' Rolling Home, standing on chairs and linking hands for each chorus. This became a bit difficult on one occasion when we were gathered at the Jug in Chapel Haddlsey as the ceiling there is quite low and there are jugs hung from it so we hit on the idea of going down on our knees for the verses and then standing up for the choruses (it was 3am and it seemed very sensible at the time). |

From: Sarah the flute Date: 19 Feb 01 - 06:22 AM Mr Red - my friends laugh at my songwriting too - being inspired by those Norfolk stalwarts of Folk I attempted a little ditty involving jolly sheep working down a coal mine while fathoming the bowl with a punch ladle - but nobody appreciated the subtlty of the lyrical arrangement (OK maybe I'd had a few nipperkins of the black stuff) and I had to defer to their superior talents for the closing song |

But now that I am getting into swing standards a bit, I am muchly taken by "We'll Meet Again". ...Don't know where, don't know when, The trouble with these really good closing songs is that's about the only time you can play them, in any logical set-ordering scheme. So you have to choose one, it seems. Can't have them leaving all night. Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: MikeofNorthumbria Date: 19 Feb 01 - 12:46 PM For audiences where those who can sing, do, and those who can't sing, listen - the Copper Family's "Thousands or More" has few equals as a finisher. For audiences where those who think they can sing are bellowing at full volume, and those who can't be bothered to sing are dropping glasses, knocking over chairs, and arguing among themselves - Leadbelly's "Midnight Special" often hits the right spot. I hear that some folk have had considerable success finishing with John Denver's "Annie's Song", but that's too syrupy for my taste. (Though we did it once, at a wedding ceilidh, because the bride's name was Annie.) There are some gigs where the only alternative to finishing with some local lad joining you for "Danny Boy" is probably a thump in the kisser. ("What key do you sing it in?" "Bugger the key, just play it, sonny!") And if the crowd insists on ending with "The Wild Rover", let them get on with it ... it's a free country, ain't it? But with almost any audience, anywhere, "Goodnight Irene" usually sends people home in a mellow mood. OK, so it's a cliche ... but it's still a pretty effective cliche. Wassail! |

Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: GUEST,Bob Pegritz Date: 20 Feb 01 - 03:43 PM In a reply to this thread, Lyrical Lady wrote the words to a song attributed to Mendelsohn. O wert thou in the cauld blast, On yonder lea, on yonder lea, My plaidie to the angry airt, I'd shelter thee, I'd shelter thee; Or did Misfortune's bitter storms Around the blaw, around thee blaw, Thy bield should be my bosom, To share it a', to share it a'. Or were I in the wildest waste, Sae black and bare, sae black and bare The desert were a Paradise, If thou wert there, if thou wert there; Or were I Monarch o' the globe, Wi' thee to reign, wi thee to reign, The brightest jewel in my Crown Wad be my Queen, wad be my Queen. I recall someone singing it early one night after which no one sang again because thats the way it is One particular song that has struck me as a good un which lends itself to some lovely harmonies is a song recorded by Mike Agranoff, written by Bob Coltman on 1971 entitled 'Before they close the Minstrel Show' I have only used a couple of times but it was magical on each occasion unless you've been lucky to get to catch Mike Agranoff who comes over here [uk] for very short tours then it will remain a 'hidden gem' of a song in his vast and high qualty repertoire. Probably better known on the East Coast of the U S but not widely. I sat on Merv's chair last week. S Y B |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 02 Oct 09 - 11:02 AM That's varied over the years. In recent years though, I finish folk concerts with Handful of Songs and gospel concerts with Sweet, Quiet Peace, one of the gospel songs I've written with the chorus: "One thing I know, and this for certain All will be well no matter what the future holds He will be there to share your every burden You'll find a sweet, quiet peace in your soul." Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: PoppaGator Date: 02 Oct 09 - 02:36 PM While in exile after Katrina, I learned the chords, and came up with a nice fingerpicking arrangement, for "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans." Since I've been back, that's been my pretty-much-regular closing number. In earlier years, "Goodnight Irene" was a favorite, and as noted above, you have to sing "I'll get you in my dreams." My other favorite closing number is one that needs to be sung unaccompanied: Dave Van Ronk's "Last Call": http://dezji.wordpress.com/2007/10/05/song-of-the-day-dave-van-ronk-last-call-1973-1994/ (Scroll down just a tad, past the opening paragraph, for lyrics.) |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Soldier boy Date: 02 Oct 09 - 03:28 PM I agree with many of the above. Some of my firm favourites have to be: Rolling Home The Holmfirth Anthem (Pratty Flowers) Goodnight Irene What shall we do with a drunken sailor? The wild rover Will ye go lassie go Dad's drunk again These are all songs that tug on the heart strings or bring out big smiles on peoples faces. Nearly everyone knows the chorus in these songs which means everyone can join in,raise the volume and lift the rafters. I think that, (where possible and politically correct), you should aim to go out with a bang/ finish on a high note, with a song that is both memorable and a proven crowd-pleaser. |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Barbara Shaw Date: 02 Oct 09 - 04:54 PM We often start and finish with "Keep on the Sunnyside" as did the Carter Family. Sometimes we end with "I'll Fly Away" and most often we end with "Hold What You Got (I'm Comin' Home Baby)." Whenever we do a program where people from several groups all come to the stage for a grand finale, it almost invariably is "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Soldier boy Date: 02 Oct 09 - 07:31 PM Yeah, I agree Barbara, I hadn't thought of that one; it's a great song and you can really belt it out. Nice one. In fact I think we finished with that one at Otley FF this year. |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Deckman Date: 02 Oct 09 - 11:18 PM I usually sing concerts that are carefully planned with themes, variety, etc. I usually build to something of a closing thought. This last tour I found great success with Peter Amberly. Bob(deckman)Nelson |

From: open mike Date: 02 Oct 09 - 11:31 PM when singing with my partner Bob we usually wrap up our set with Islanders by Gary Fjellgaard, as he used to live on an island in B.C. in jams/circles we usually end up with will the circle be unbroken and i often like to end my solo gigs with the toast A Health to the Company which states "we may and might never all meet here again" |

Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 04 Oct 09 - 03:42 AM If I'm in Greece it's usually Goodnight Irene in tribute to The Cook. In this country and if I've had too much brandy it's usually Blue Suede Shoes. RtS "I've emptied bigger rooms than this". |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: Soldier boy Date: 04 Oct 09 - 08:30 PM Sorry Barbara, I didn't make it very clear did I? I was refering to the song: "Will the circle be unbroken". This is a great song and has a special meaning to me. For me it always kind of sums up the feeling I have that the folk fraternity and all my folkie friends are one big, vibrant, close and loving "extended family"; where the bonds I have formed over the years will never be broken. Bless them all, because I feel blessed to have gotten to know them and count them as very special people and very special firm friends in my life. I treasure them all and I am so taken and feel so moved at the moment by this thought that I might just start a new thread to celebrate such relationships formed on the folk curcuit and invite you good people to say what such relationships mean to you... so look out for a new thread headed 'The Folk Fraternity...my treasured "extended family"' starting pretty soon. Thank you. Chris |
Subject: RE: What song do you finish with? From: autoharpbob Date: 05 Oct 09 - 07:23 AM Just a point that the Carter Family original was "CAN the circle be unbroken". And do you sing it crooked, or straightened out? My favourite closer is "No Time to Tarry Here" Mothers all, fare you well (x3) I'm on my journey home No time to tarry here, No time to wait for you, No time to tarry here, I'm on my journey home Fathers all.... Brothers all..... Sisters all..... Neighbours all.... Sinners all.... The audience soon gets the hang of it! |
