We almost lost my mother two weeks ago and my dad was so upset he was almost speechless. She made it and she is still with us. I was reminded of this song...It is waltz tempo with a 1,4,5 progression...hg

I thought this song was older. Words and music 1973 by Jud Strunk, and Strunk made the recording. Sounds like it could be one of those old sentimental songs of the late 19th century.

It is a nice love song. Have you heard Palace Grand? it was recorded by Dave Para and Kathy Barton on Folk Legacy, and I also did it on Beginners Luck. I'm also very fond of Utah Phillips' Faded Roses of December, and his, I Remember Loving You.

David Mallett has written a song-tribute to his friend Jud Strunk. I can't recall the title, but it's worth searching out. I heard it on Tom May's radio show a few years ago.

I'd be willing to bet that Kendall does a knockup job on "Daisy". K. , your "Make Hay While The Sun Shines" is one of my all-time favorites.

Kendall, I too love "I Remember Loving You." My song circle does it frequently. I especially like Utah Phillps and Priscilla Herdman in a duet. For anyone interested in the song, Sing Out magazine printed it in Vol.44 No. 1 Fall 1999.

I remember this song from the early 70's. I always liked it,but haven't heard it in years. Seems like I never heard of Jud Strunk again after this song. What else has he done? Also, is Palace Grand the same song as Lady Mary?

A few Mudcat musicians have sung it for me at request and it will be done again in the concert this week. Jed wrote several others but this is the only real hit he made. It is a shame too because he was a great talent.

Jud Strunk was tragically killed in a plane crash in the mid (?) seventies. As far as I know he only made one album- there was a great song about a general store on it Kendall- what else can you tell us about Jud? Fred crossed paths with him a few times..surely you did?

Hi Julia. I didnt know you were hanging around here! I didnt know Jud very well, but, I do know one of his side musicians, Glen Jenks of Camden. Glen is the best ragtime piano player I have ever seen. He is also one of the most accomplished performers I know. He has a few stories about travel with Jud.
Anyway, The song you refer to is Bill Jones General Store. Dont know if I can recall all the words, but, I'll try.

Was Jud from Maine?

I met Glen Jenks one fine night at the Paton's in Sharon, CT. He and Gordon B. were on the road doing gigs. I was out East on tour and "field collecting" from Sandy & Caroline's record collection. We sat around and sang and all of us changed strings if I remember correctly. And Mr. Bok does have a ton of strings to change.

Many good memories of the Folk Legacy oasis.

To answer Art Thieme- yes Jud was from Maine.In addition to being a folksinger/ songwriter (before they were called that) he was doing the talk show circuit as kind of a Maine humorist (LL Bean boots, plaid shirt etc)- he had a schtick about his amazing product "real wood" as a response to those rolled up newspaper logs. My brother had his album which he played constantly- in fact I should see if he can remember that general store song.Hey Kendall, maybe between us we can figure it out.

I hate to contradict someone I like a lot, but, originally, Jud came from Buffalo NY. He lived in Eustice Maine for years, but, alas, he was "from away". I still cant find that damn tape. Art, I also have fond memories of gatherings around Folk Legacy. Remember the humor work shop you and I did at the Hartford festival? What fun! I'm still chuckling about your tale of an uncle who had a wooden leg from the knee up!!

I have the first album, and was able to find the listing for the second, and I found a wav sound file on this page, Lost Island Music. The versions are different, but only slightly. Q: I see you have recorded at least two songs by Judd Strunk, "Daisy a Day" and "Bill Jones General Store". Did you know Judd before he passed away? I am from the town where he is buried.

A: Yes, Judd Strunk was a very good friend of mine. Shirley and I and the children visited him and his wife Marnie on a number of occasions when he lived in Farmington Maine. Judd called me from Los Angeles one time when he was working with Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. He told me that he had just written a song for me to record. He sang a few lines, and I loved it. I told him to send it up, as I was recording another album in two weeks. Before he could get the song to me, his own producer insisted that he record it himself. I was really pleased that he had so much success with the song. I finally got a chance to record it, and it is one that I never get tired of singing. That song is "Daisy a Day".

Another song of Judd's that was a big hit for me was "Bill Jones' General Store". The story behind that song was absolutely true, and I actually met some of the characters that he wrote about in the song, like Herky Wright and Whitey.

It seems as though "Daisy A Day" is one of those "underground hits". I was really surprised how many people here remembered the song with such fondness and many weere even singing it. When my marriage broke up, I remember thinking tha tthe hopes I once had, as expressed in the song, would not take place - we would never be like that couple.

When I went to follow the link to fortunecity.com\tinpanalley\albums, I got the dreaded 404 error message. Any other suggestions? I would love to get the tune down well enough to learn the song. I think I can do it now without tearing up too much.

Hi, John -if you go to an online CD retailer like CDNOW.com, you can do a search by song title. You'll find recordings of "Daisy a Day" by the Mike Curb Congregation, Jim Nabors, the Killarney singers, Wilma Lee Cooper, and on collections by Hank Snow and Ernest Tubb. There's also a volume of the "Have a Nice Day" series that has a Jud Strunk recording of this song.
I suppose it's kind of sappy, but it's one of those songs you can't help singing along with.

Jud was a regular on the old "Laugh In" show in the sixties as a humorist rather than a musician, but he still gained popular recognition from it. I remember seeing him in 78 or 79 at a festival. He's still the only performer I can recall having a trombone in his band for a bluegrass get together.

In the song Bill Jones General Store, the Herky Wright is my Grandpa! I never met him but my Dad told me about this song. His whole family lived in Stratton Maine.
