Lyr Req: Battle Cry of Freedom

Subject: Which battle cry of freedom?

I was listening again to the CD of music from Ken Burns' movie 'The Civil War', and decided to check Digitrad for the words to "Battle Cry of Freedom". The words are there but the tune is entirely different - doesn't seem to be related at all! Is there a set of words to the tune from the film?

Don't know what tune is on the CD but as a CW Reenactor I would definetely recognize the tune in the trad as Battle Cry of Freedom.

The DT tune is here - file name BATTLCRY. It's the only tune I've ever heard to the song.

Jennie, you said the words were in the DT, but you asked for the words to the song on the CD. I'm a bit confused.

I got the CD out - the tune is the same. (I love the tune, by the way.)

The words in the DT are the right ones. (On the CD, the tune is played, not sung.)

I believe the tune is to "Rally Round the Flag, Boys", which includes the phrase, "Shouting the battle cry of Freedom!".

Let me further complicate the issue and say there was a Union version and a Confederate version. Same tune, different words.

The Battle Cry of Freedom by George F. Root
and
The Battle Cry of Freedom - Southern version, same tune as the original.

When I first read this thread, I thought we were talking about the English civil war, some 200 years before this one. The interesting thing is that I was an English Civil War reenactor in a past life. We sang a wide variety of songs from Puritan hymns to Cavalier marching songs to rugby songs. One of the songs we sang very frequently seems to be a parody on The Battle Cry of Freedom. The chorus went:

Hurrah for Mary! Hurrah for the lamb!
Hurrah for the little boy, who didn't give a little bit
And everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go
Shouting out the battle cry of Freedom

Ian: You're right that is a parody of The BAttle-cry of Freedom My Civil War re-enacting unit (American) sings it thus: Mary had a little lamb its fleece was white as snow, Shouting the Battle-cry of Freedom! And every where that Mary went the Lamb was sure to go, Shouting the battle-cry of freedom! Hurrah for Mary!
