Subject: Which battle cry of freedom? From: JennieG Date: 18 Feb 01 - 05:20 AM I was listening again to the CD of music from Ken Burns' movie 'The Civil War', and decided to check Digitrad for the words to "Battle Cry of Freedom". The words are there but the tune is entirely different - doesn't seem to be related at all! Is there a set of words to the tune from the film? Cheers JennieG |
Subject: RE: Which battle cry of freedom? From: Banjer Date: 18 Feb 01 - 05:26 AM Don't know what tune is on the CD but as a CW Reenactor I would definetely recognize the tune in the trad as Battle Cry of Freedom. |
Subject: RE: Which battle cry of freedom? From: Jeri Date: 18 Feb 01 - 08:53 AM The DT tune is here - file name BATTLCRY. It's the only tune I've ever heard to the song. Jennie, you said the words were in the DT, but you asked for the words to the song on the CD. I'm a bit confused. |
Subject: RE: Which battle cry of freedom? From: Jeri Date: 18 Feb 01 - 09:02 AM I got the CD out - the tune is the same. (I love the tune, by the way.) The words in the DT are the right ones. (On the CD, the tune is played, not sung.) |
Subject: RE: Which battle cry of freedom? From: Amos Date: 19 Feb 01 - 01:45 AM I believe the tune is to "Rally Round the Flag, Boys", which includes the phrase, "Shouting the battle cry of Freedom!". A |
Subject: RE: Which battle cry of freedom? From: Kim C Date: 19 Feb 01 - 10:28 AM Let me further complicate the issue and say there was a Union version and a Confederate version. Same tune, different words. |
Subject: RE: Which battle cry of freedom? From: Sorcha Date: 19 Feb 01 - 10:43 AM I thought so, too, Kim, but my sleepy, foggy brain is not coming up with the Confederate words......... |
Subject: RE: Which battle cry of freedom? From: Jeri Date: 19 Feb 01 - 10:45 AM At this site with lots of Civil War songs, (lyrics and tunes) there are: The Battle Cry of Freedom by George F. Root and The Battle Cry of Freedom - Southern version, same tune as the original. |
Subject: RE: Which battle cry of freedom? From: IanC Date: 19 Feb 01 - 11:16 AM When I first read this thread, I thought we were talking about the English civil war, some 200 years before this one. The interesting thing is that I was an English Civil War reenactor in a past life. We sang a wide variety of songs from Puritan hymns to Cavalier marching songs to rugby songs. One of the songs we sang very frequently seems to be a parody on The Battle Cry of Freedom. The chorus went:
Hurrah for Mary! Hurrah for the lamb!
Cheers! |
Subject: RE: Which battle cry of freedom? From: Irish sergeant Date: 19 Feb 01 - 03:45 PM Ian: You're right that is a parody of The BAttle-cry of Freedom My Civil War re-enacting unit (American) sings it thus: Mary had a little lamb its fleece was white as snow, Shouting the Battle-cry of Freedom! And every where that Mary went the Lamb was sure to go, Shouting the battle-cry of freedom! Hurrah for Mary! Hurrah for the Lamb, Hurrah for the soldiers who don't give a damn, SHouting the battle-cry of freedom! It's always a pleasure to share parodies with those who enjoy them, Kindest reguards, Neil |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Battle Cry of Freedom From: GUEST,Azizi Date: 04 Sep 12 - 08:53 AM Here's a link to a post about "Battle Cry For Freedom" that I just published on my cultural blog: http://pancocojams.blogspot.com/2012/09/shouting-battle-cry-of-freedom-lyrics.html My post includes information and comments about that song as well as lyrics of that song. In addition, that post includes a sound file of a conventional version of "Battle Cry Of Freedom" and a video of an accapela group singing a slower version of that song. |
Subject: Lyr Add: BATTLE CRY OF FREEDOM (Confederate versn) From: GUEST,999 Date: 21 Feb 13 - 08:58 AM While looking around for another Civil War lyric I tripped over the following. The is one lyric in the DT at http://mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=525 and I thought the following could be added to the DT somewhere. Confederate version lyrics to THE BATTLE CRY OF FREEDOM: Our flag is proudly floating on the land and on the main, Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom! Beneath it oft we've conquered, and we'll conquer oft again! Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom! Our Dixie forever! She's never at a loss! Down with the eagle and up with the cross! We'll rally 'round the bonny flag, we'll rally once again, Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom! Our gallant boys have marched to the rolling of the drums. Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom! And the leaders in charge cry out, "Come, boys, come!" Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!-- Our Dixie forever! She's never at a loss! Down with the eagle and up with the cross! We'll rally 'round the bonny flag, we'll rally once again, Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom! They have laid down their lives on the bloody battle field. Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom! Their motto is resistance -- "To tyrants we'll not yield!" Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!-- Our Dixie forever! She's never at a loss! Down with the eagle and up with the cross! We'll rally 'round the bonny flag, we'll rally once again, Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom! While our boys have responded and to the fields have gone. Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom! Our noble women also have aided them at home. Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!-- Our Dixie forever! She's never at a loss! Down with the eagle and up with the cross! We'll rally 'round the bonny flag, we'll rally once again, Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom! That is from http://www.civilwarheritagetrails.org/American_Civil_War/Battle_Cry_of_Freedom.html There are other songs on that site from the Civil War, so people interested in stuff from that era might wish to take note of the site itself if you don't already have it bookmarked. |
