Subject: Brave boys died, down in Alabam... From: Ebbie Date: 18 Feb 01 - 07:37 PM Does anyone know the lyrics and some history on a fiddle tune/song I've heard done around town? I suspect that it's in opposition to Abe Lincoln- for instance, some words are 'Old yaller dog came out of the wilderness'; another verse says 'Old Abe Lincoln came out of the wilderness, and the chorus is 'Brave boys died, brave boys died, brave boys died, down in Alabam.' Who better to ask than the good ol' Cat? Ebbie |

And the song as given in the link doesn't have the words or tune for the "brave boys died" lines. The site says the song was written in 1858. Obviously pro-Lincoln. I wonder if the further verses were added by someone in the south to put a different spin on it? I just tried to call a local man who brought back the song from Pittsburgh PA a few years ago. Didn't reach him but I'll try again later. Again, thank you. Ebbie

Subject: Lyr Add: GO IN THE WILDERNESS From: raredance Date: 18 Feb 01 - 11:09 PM This song is from "Slave songs of the United States" by Allen, Ware and Garrison first published in 1867 (reprinted once in 1929 and again in the 1960's by Oak Publications, the latter with upgraded musical arrangements) Essentially the same song was printed more recently in "Slave Songs" compiled by Jerry Silverman (Chelsea House 1994) GO IN THE WILDERNESS

From: Lighter Date: 17 Mar 23 - 05:38 PM Eighteen years later, I can report that nobody has uncovered a text of "Old Abe Lincoln Came Out of the Wilderness" earlier than that supplied by Carl Sandburg in "The American Songbag" (1927). Indeed, nobody's found a later text that doesn't derive from that one. "Torchlight processions of Republicans," he tells us, "sang this in the summer and fall months of 1860." There's just the one stanza. Nothing about Jeff Davis, who in 1860 was still a U.S. Senator and hadn't torn down the government. The two Davis stanzas originated with Hermes Nye on his 1954 album "Ballads of the Civil War." Sandburg was born in Galesburg, Ill., in 1878. Presumably he heard the simple lyrics, to a very popular tune, from members of his parents' generation in Illinois. |
