Subject: Doc Williams? From: Barbara Shaw Date: 19 Oct 97 - 09:05 PM Has anyone heard of someone named Doc Williams who had a song probably called "Roses Are Blooming"? Would like the music and lyrics. Heard it in Maine at the Thomas Point Bluegrass Festival. |
Subject: RE: Doc Williams? From: lesblank Date: 19 Oct 97 - 10:42 PM Back in the early 50's, there was a station that broadcast from Wheeling W Vaeach night hosted by Lee and Juanita Moore. They played bluegrass and "real" country. One of the featured groups, with several songs each night, was Doc Williams and the Border Riders. I specifically remember my favorite -- "Footprints in the Snow". Don't know if this is the one you're looking for. Point a thread directly to One, Gene Graham, resident expert. I'm sure he'd know. |

Subject: RE: Doc Williams? From: Barbara Shaw Date: 20 Oct 97 - 12:31 PM Thanks for the replies! So far, not the song I'm looking for. The lyrics go something like "Roses are blooming, come back to me darling," from what I remember, walking by a jam where they were doing it. They said it was written by someone named Doc Williams, whom I'd never heard of. Probably the guy mentioned by lesblank. By the way, When the Roses Bloom Again is a really pretty song. How nice to run into someone who's heard it. I'm going to try to find "Jerry's good ol tunes"! Sounds like my kinda site. |

Subject: RE: Doc Williams? From: Barbara Shaw Date: 08 Jul 98 - 01:00 PM Just found a song in a Bill Clifton old-time folk and gospel songbook that might be the song I'm looking for. He calls it "When the Spring Roses are Blooming" as recorded by the original A.P. Carter Family. So now I have the lyrics (I think), but can't remember the melody! Does anyone know where I can find this song? |
Subject: Lyr Add: HAPPY OR LONESOME From: GUEST,Dale Date: 12 May 01 - 10:16 AM Hi Barbara ~~ I hope you find this after 3 1/2 years!
Actually I first heard this last summer beautifully performed by a local student singing here at the Ozark Folk Center. Then last fall when I bought the complete Bear Family Carter Family set, there it was, recorded in 1934. Its proper name is Happy Or Lonesome. Charles Wolfe says it was previously recorded as Are You Happy Or Lonesome? by Burnett and Rutherford in 1927. More recently it has been recorded by Kay Justice and Ginny Hawker. While the Carter version is great, it doesn't stand up to Carrie's version for me.
PS, I like Doc Williams, too! I'll remind Gene about that album.
Happy Or Lonesome
Come back to me in my dreaming
I wonder if you still love me
Somewhere a heart is breaking
Absence makes my heart fonder
When the sun is sinking
Come tell me that you still love me I'll send a real audio on request. |

I remember going to live shows up here in Canada with Doc & Chickie Williams & their blind accordian player Marion Martin if I remember correctly. Chickie use to sing Roses Are Blooming with Doc at every show I attended you could hear a pin drop. I learned to play the guitar (a little) from the mail order guitar course he produced.
