Has anyone heard of someone named Doc Williams who had a song probably called "Roses Are Blooming"? Would like the music and lyrics. Heard it in Maine at the Thomas Point Bluegrass Festival.

Back in the early 50's, there was a station that broadcast from Wheeling W Vaeach night hosted by Lee and Juanita Moore. They played bluegrass and "real" country. One of the featured groups, with several songs each night, was Doc Williams and the Border Riders. I specifically remember my favorite -- "Footprints in the Snow". Don't know if this is the one you're looking for. Point a thread directly to One, Gene Graham, resident expert. I'm sure he'd know.

If it's "Footprints in the Snow" go to the Bluegrass links & follow links to Jerry's 'good ol tunes' you'll find footprints there. Sorry I don't know how to set a links up. Barry

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: WHEN THE ROSES BLOOM AGAIN
From: Gene
Date: 20 Oct 97 - 10:15 AM

Hello Barbara...There are many songs with Roses in the Title or verse....Here's an old one that is done at many bluegrass festivals....hope it is the one you are looking for.

WHEN THE ROSES BLOOM AGAIN
Recorded by Jim Greer and The Mac-O-Chee Valley Folks
Stars of the W.W.V.A. Jamboree

CAPO: 3rd FRET/KEY: F/PLAY: D
[D] They were strolling thru the gloaming as the roses were in bloom
A soldier and his sweetheart fond and [A7] true
And their [D] hearts were filled with sorrow
As their [G] thoughts were of tomorrow
As she [A7] pinned a rose upon his coat of [D] blue.

Do not [G] ask me love to linger for you [D] know not what you say
For duty calls your sweethearts' name a-[A7] gain
And your [D] heart ye not be sighing
If I [G] be among the dying
I'll be [A7] with you when the roses bloom a-[D] gain.

CHORUS
When the [G] roses bloom again beside the ri-[D] ver
And the Robin Redbreast sings his sweet re-[A7] frain
In the [D] days of Old Lang Syne
I'll be [G] with you, sweetheart mine
I'll be [A7] with you when the roses bloom a-[D] gain.

REPEAT CHORUS

TAG: I'll be [A7] with you when the roses bloom a-[D] gain.

Thanks for the replies! So far, not the song I'm looking for. The lyrics go something like "Roses are blooming, come back to me darling," from what I remember, walking by a jam where they were doing it. They said it was written by someone named Doc Williams, whom I'd never heard of. Probably the guy mentioned by lesblank. By the way, When the Roses Bloom Again is a really pretty song. How nice to run into someone who's heard it.

I'm going to try to find "Jerry's good ol tunes"! Sounds like my kinda site.

Just found a song in a Bill Clifton old-time folk and gospel songbook that might be the song I'm looking for. He calls it "When the Spring Roses are Blooming" as recorded by the original A.P. Carter Family.

So now I have the lyrics (I think), but can't remember the melody! Does anyone know where I can find this song?

Hi Barbara ~~ I hope you find this after 3 1/2 years!

Actually I first heard this last summer beautifully performed by a local student singing here at the Ozark Folk Center. Then last fall when I bought the complete Bear Family Carter Family set, there it was, recorded in 1934. Its proper name is Happy Or Lonesome. Charles Wolfe says it was previously recorded as Are You Happy Or Lonesome? by Burnett and Rutherford in 1927. More recently it has been recorded by Kay Justice and Ginny Hawker. While the Carter version is great, it doesn't stand up to Carrie's version for me.

PS, I like Doc Williams, too! I'll remind Gene about that album.

Happy Or Lonesome
(I haven't located composer credits yet)

Come back to me in my dreaming
Come back to me once more
Come with the love light beaming
Like in the days of yore

I wonder if you still love me
And if your heart is still true
When the spring roses are blooming
Then I'll come back to you

Somewhere a heart is breaking
Calling me back to you
Memories of loved ones waiting
Each happy home and you

Absence makes my heart fonder
Is it the same with you
Are you still happy I wonder
Or do you feel lonesome too

When the sun is sinking
In the golden west
And the birds and flowers
They have gone to rest

Come tell me that you still love me
And that your heart is still true
When the spring roses are blooming
Then I'll come back to you

I'll send a real audio on request.

Go to this site for quite a few songs by Doc Williams and also by his wife Chickie.http://members.spree.com/entertainment/recordlady/main.htm

I don't think the Roses song is present, at least it did not show up in my alphabetical search, but a lot of other good things there.

Dale emailed me a RealMedia File-

Lyrics are slightly different in this version-

Happy Or Lonesome
Recorded by: The Carter Family

[1] Come back to me in my dreaming
Come [4] back to me once [1] more
Come with the love light gleaming
As [2] in the days of [5] yore
Come [1] tell me that you still love me
And [4] that your heart is still [1] true
When the spring roses are blooming
Then [5] I'll come back to [1] you

CHORUS
[1] Somewhere a heart is breaking
[4] Calling me back to [1] you
Mem'ries of loved ones are waiting
Each [2] happy home and [5] you
[1] Absence makes my heart fonder
[4] Is it the same with [1] you
Are you still happy I wonder
Or [5] do you feel lonesome [1] too

When the sun is sinkin'
In the golden west
And the birds and flowers
They have gone to rest
Come tell me that you still love me
And that your heart is still true
When the spring roses are blooming
Then I'll come back to you

CHORUS

WOW talk about memories. I remember going to live shows up here in Canada with Doc & Chickie Williams & their blind accordian player Marion Martin if I remember correctly. Chickie use to sing Roses Are Blooming with Doc at every show I attended you could hear a pin drop. I learned to play the guitar (a little) from the mail order guitar course he produced. Still remember the base runs....

Wondering if anyone has recordings from Doc Williams and the Border Riders from the begining? My Grandfather was one of the original members (Sullenberger) and I would love to hear him play.

ROSES ARE BLOOMING   Key - FMajor Chord Prog. F - Bb- F Bb - F -Bb - C7 - F

Soft moonlight was shining the night that we parted
I held you and kissed you and called you my own
In words sweet and Tender, you said that you love me
And thay you'd return when the roses bloom.

Refrain:
Roses are blooming come back to me darling
Come back to me darling and never more roam
Robins are singing, church bells are ringing
Roses are blooming so come back my own.

The days have been long dear, the nights have been dreary
I've missed you my darling since you went away
But still I keep hoping that you will remember
That you will remember and come back some day.

From Doc Williams Song Book. Do not know how to post sheet music to this site. PM me - I will scan it and email it.
