As we are come near to the end of February, a month of seeming blues for several members, I offer a thought of Spring (well metaphorical, at least) ala Shelley:

And, by the incantation of this verse,
Scatter, as from an unextinguished hearth
Ashes and sparks, my words among mankind!
Be through my lips to unwakened earth
The trumpet of a prophecy! O Wind,
If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?

Thirty years ago today I was not thinking about the long winter still ahaed. My son Benjamin was born and I felt as all new fathers feel, a new life, a new beginning and very proud. Today we celebrate again!

It doesn't seem like spring will ever get here. Granted, I have the patience of a 5yr old when it comes to spring. (When it comes to a LOT of things...like THAT'S a suprise!)

News I can report, however, is that the babies are coming. Rebirth in all it's forms. Seedlings in the greenhouse and on the windowsill, the ice breaking up on the river, puppies, kittens, lambs, calves, and frolicking foals...

The thing I long for most is the ENERGY. I read all the physics B.S. like everyone else, energy cannot be created or destroyed etc... But springtime seems to create an energy that I wait baited for, and then relish in memory during the rest of the year. Spring sunshine seems to be a bit warmer, and the raindrops taste like honey on your tongue.

May this spring shake all of the Mudcat Blues right down to it's very soul.

~Elle

Ah, Jen, the physicists don't know the half of it!!! They have to say that -- it's in their contract. The truth is not that energy can't be created. It's that you don't get it any OTHER way!!! It's a by-product of the most ferocious set of life-generated postulates ou ever did see, I am sure. And Springtime just naturally fires up the soul. That's where the energy comes from!!!

Love,

A

Amergin, by the time I am on SS, you will be sitting in a rocking chair, needing your nappies changed and your false teeth put in!**BG**

Last year this is how I felt about February and the coming spring:

Snow falls, cold and bleak,
Covering winter's soiled excess
Streets defined by dirt and ice,
Lead into dark and cold,
No destination, no detours.
Black despair and cold,
Naked trees hold no promise of spring,
Dead flowers do not sleep,
To spring again into blossom
With the warm touch of the sun.
Death stalks the land
And gazes with empty eyes into my soul.
February is in my heart.

And now I am touching on those feelings again.

Sorry to be a downer.

My neighbor's crocuses are bright gold, circling his young trees and bird feeders. The jonquils between my house and my other neighbor's are in full bloom. There is a carpet of wild onions bristling in the back yard, and sprigs of real grass are pushing up through the mud. When I walked by a nearby creek yesterday, there were tiny, tiny blue flowers looking like pieces of sky scattered over the moss. Forsythia has sprayed yards and hedges with yellow perfume.

We could have another snow (once we had an official blizzard in March here [East Tennessee]), and it will be really cold again, maybe several times. But right now, for a few days at least, we have the promise of Spring, and I welcome her, holding her in my arms.

On that note, think I'll go fishin'. I didn't say "catchin'" - just fishin'.

"C'mon, dogs, let's go."

No better time to repost the start of Leonard Cohen's poem.

It's Probably Spring

So-an-so is sick of all the shit but doesn't feel that bad today because it's probably spring. The laundry in the sunshine tells the obscene family story of power and love but it doesn't matter because it's probably spring. Jack is fat and Jane is twisted from the Plague but you don't have to choose today because it's probably spring...

I'm with Sorcha, we have a ways to go and best not be looking to Spring yet. These warm days in late Winter can be beguiling and then you think its here. Then the Spring snows really kick in and you end up feeling bitter. Up here on the mountain there have been Springs where I didn't see any ground peaking through the snow until May. You take what you get. Maybe I can get some more crosscountry ski trips in. I'm sure I will. Better dust off those snowshoes.

We have a week in the Lake District (UK) booked for first week in March each year. A week of walking in the hills clears out the cobwebs of winter and restores the spirits.

Weather sometimes less than perfect but psychologically we are almost there!! Rising Spirits to you all.Geordie.

Yeah, yeah...I know it is too early for Spring in the Rockies, at least, and it IS snowing here, today, BUT take a look at what I woke up to and you will see that I just can't let it bother me too much. I've got promises of the beauty of spring right here in my front room!

luvya'll

Actually Woody, when I posted that I was revisiting those feelings over another woman.

How many fish are there in the sea?

Hey, Naemanson, if you keep up that gloomy attitude, all the fish will be swimming in the opposite direction!!!

Coffeehouse last night. I'm doing much better. Moods come in cycles. I was in a trough and now I ride a crest. With luck and attitude adjustments I can stay on a crest for quite a while.
