From: nutty Date: 24 Feb 01 - 01:18 PM I've just been listening to the TV and it said that The Beatles appeared at the Cavern 40 years ago........ 40 years...... they have just got to be joking I know the old joints are not as supple...... the feet not as nimble........ the brain not as agile ........ the eyes not as bright ..... but 40 years I refuse to believe that I am 40 years worth of older .......... 30 I might accept .... 20 is more how I feel How do these years creep up on us?????? I really think folk music is to blame ...... it lets us grow old and yet still participate You can sing and play sitting down ..... no need to be agile You can still sing and play as well or even better than you used to as a teenager All your friends are ageing alongside of you ...... so you don't notice it as much You are much more discerning about your activities and have learned to pace yourself A friend of mine says .... GROWING OLD IS INEVITABLE..... GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL .... I believe her ... I,ve done the long climb to the top -- now I'm on the gentle slide down the otherside -- How about you???? |

I have taken them a day at a time ever since. It is a pity that, thanks to George W. Bush, the next generation will have to return to that stupid childhood fear, due to the coming new arms race. There is a decadal generation that was freed from that fear, and the masters of war are closing in again. As I age I learn more, and I refine more. I still play the same games but experience tells me when to slide and when to take the out at second. 100 yards are just a far but I'm in less of a hurry and there is some great things to see along the way. The Swiss naturalist Louis Agassi said of vacations that he took them in his back yard because there were undiscovered worlds under the grasses in his lawn. I still sing the same songs I use too only I understand the passions that inspired them now. Which makes them more passionate in of themselves. I understand now the meaning of " Its the trip, not the destination thats important". As we age we still do the same stuff we did as kids but now we savor when we used to sample. And we've learned to appreciate as well. Ain't nothing wrong with 50, my Sweetie is nearly there and I doubt we will be able to tell the difference tween 49 and 50, any more than we could at 17 and 18 or 22 and 23. When I reached the magic 40, I found myself turning my life completely on its head. Maybe it was the classical midlife crisis setting in! Anyway, I got out of a relationship which had definatly run its course, dumped a pretty good job in industry and decided it was time to start trying to follow a few of the dreams that had been lurking somewhere deep inside for as long as I can remember. I simply had the feeling that I´d been given a second (and last) chance and was bloody sure I was going to take it! So I stopped earning decent money and started working with severly handicapped adults - and I love every minute. And I´ve got a really good band together (which would have been impossible in my earlier life) and a CD out which isnt selling badly at all.Lots of TV and radio coverage. And, and, and.....the list could go on and on! Ok, so it isnt all a bed of roses.....crises come and crises go.....but its all down to weathering the storm and thats something I´ve learned to do pretty well. But the most important thing - my relationship to my kids couldnt be better. Now that they are growing up, they are turning into really good friends and I´m getting to be very proud of them! So much so that my daughter, who is 14 and is going through a very difficult phase, has just camped herself down on my floor and has decided to move in with me. For good!! So I am now sharing my 30m² with 6 guitars, a banjo, a mandolin, and a daughter! Looks like the next couple of years could be veeeeery interesting. (Must start looking for a bigger flat!!) So, what I´m trying to say - 40 is the time to take your chances, roll with the changes and make your life what YOU want it to be! All the best, John |

It hit me when I turned 40 and realized that I was doing my adult work, that I was in the midst of a couple of careers, and that I wasn't waiting to find out what I was going to do with my life anymore -- I was already doing it. Now, seven years later, I am conscious of the fact that I am middle aged, and thouroughly enjoying it. We have to age in order to be the elders of our communities. I feel like I have learned a lot and seen a lot. Every once in a while I am asked to pass some of it on. The young folks don't get asked that. I hope that continues. I am thoroughly enjoying it. I think the secret to success as an aging person is to thoroughly enjoy whatever stage of your life you are in. I suspect that is what people really mean when they talk about being young at heart. But I don't see myself as being young at heart or in any other way. I'm having too much fun being the age I am -- I'm getting older all the time and enjoying in thoroughly. John Peekstok |

The word for the day, I suddenly realized...people used to use, when I was young! I could recall saying it (Happened to be the word, 'daw.')-- or, I thought we used to say it.

She was so afraid I would embarrass her that she wanted to advise me on what to wear each day. When I finally resisted and told her I'd wear what I wanted, she informed me, "OK, go ahead, everybody will laugh." Hollowfox, a good friend and I were talking to her mother about how we couldn't work half as hard as our mothers. This lady said the same thing about her mother. Then she remarked, "Guess you girls were just diluted by your fathers' genes." Kendall and Amos, I'm really enjoying my granddaughter. The funiest thing is when my daughter realizes that I just might know a thing or two about kids. She always leaves Hubby and I with instructions on how to babysit...we can't wait 'til she walks out the door! Dave, I remember when I was 31 and somebody told me I was closer to 40 than 20. I never planned to be 50, it just sort of happened, and I'm not sure I even know what it really means. My memory extends farther than some, not as far as others, I'm still in college (my father avoids answering any question about my age when his friends ask him how old his daughters are), I have a grandchild (!)who's 8, I don't own a house--I can't quite get used to the fact that it's 2001. I remember thinking when I was 10 or 12 that MAYBE I'd be alive when the century turned. I think I work with teenagers because I like to remember what it's like to be so alive, so torn by hormones and emotions and uncertainties--even though I think teenagers today have to deal with things I was thankfully unaware of (and some that weren't even invented yet when I was 16). There is also something very poignant about realizing that I'm no longer an adolescent, a state of being I think I dragged out for a much longer time than I could have. If I had any doubts that I'm an adult, they're certainly gone now. I've worked for the last week with a gently autistic 15 year old girl, who has a tendency to say exactly what's on her mind--the first day I met her, she said, you're kinda old, huh. I agreed that I was, kind of. She wanted to know exactly how old. I said I was over 40. Oh, she said, really, really, really old. Then she said, you have kinda thick eyebrows and you should really shave off that mustache. I have to admit that I felt more than a little self-conscious the rest of the evening. Little whippersnapper. I had half a mind to give him a good talking to, but the prunes kicked in right about then, and I had taken my dentures out for the hockey game, and anyway it was time for my TV program - Mac and Rachel had a big fight and Janet was standing by the door listening when the show ended on Friday,and I didn't want to miss this episode. And the outreach nurse was coming to do my feet. Also I needed to put some unwrapped candies into my cardigan pocket so I would have something to give to visiting children. |

I lived in a co-ed dorm at university, and for a few bright shining weeks the majority of us were hooked on that bloody program. Saved a lot of money by not going to the pub those afternoons, but other than that, I'm not too proud of that aspect of my education. I remember walking between the two residence halls one afternoon, when a huge roar erupted from all the common rooms on all the floors. This was when Rachel stabbed Janet in the pool. Or vice versa. Or Mac stabbed Janet. Or Colonel Mustard poked Rex Morgan in the arm with a penknife.Or something. Don't think I watched much after that. He is 47 and just retired from the Air Force and now works for CSX railroading, My 26 year old grandaughter works for Tri-rail as an Engineer driving trains and my 6 1/2 year old great grandaugter is learning to dance. I work everyday as a aircraft tech rep, drive and repair my bosses 72 foot yacht, carry a 188 average in bowling, shoot in the low hundreds in golf, I am learning to play the five string banjo, and my Irish heritage keeps the Guinness flowing, the Vodka and tonic flowing and can maintain a steady step with a snootful. My most fervent wish is to play the banjo and dance with my wife at my Great Grandaughters. I am going to be 69 in June, and dont have time to be grow up or grow old. I am active in my Parish and keep telling the Pastor that when I grow up I want to be like my friend ED who is like a Leprechaun. I still turn and look at a pretty girl amd a pretty woman. There may be snow on the roof but theres still fire in the furnace and not just in my mind. The head is still covered with hair, its silver gray, and not to thin. Hell, with my great-grandaughter I dont have time to get old?? Besides who wants to, I hate rocking chairs and I would miss to much fun. And everyday I thank My Lord for the first breath in my lungs and the sight of daylight and the realization that whatever happens for the rest of the day is up to me and him. The books were on growing up in the 50s and being young in the 60s. They mix people's reminiscences with ads and photos of the period. I remembered an awful lot! They showed 5 typical albums of the late 60s - Pink Floyd, Doors, Moody Blues and a couple of others. Guess which ones I've still got in one form or another! Those of you who want to get wry comments on growing old disgracefully should listen to Terry Wogan on BBC Radio 2 between 7.30 and 9.30 am GMT. The audience does appear to be international. Andrea
