Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Katcina Date: 26 Feb 01 - 01:01 AM First I couldn't get in here to post and then I didn't even think about it anymore because it was such a fantastic night. Anyone who wasn't there really missed out. Everyone who was there, THANK YOU for making it such a fine evening. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Amergin Date: 26 Feb 01 - 01:10 AM Katcina here has gotten pretty ballsy....at the end she even had the gall to boot Max out of the room.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Katcina Date: 26 Feb 01 - 01:14 AM I didn't see you offering to sit up and sing to him Amergin. LOL |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Amergin Date: 26 Feb 01 - 01:19 AM Katcina, how romantic that sounds and everything, I'm a bit too tired tonight... |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Jon Freeman Date: 26 Feb 01 - 08:29 AM I agree it was a great night - another of the best I have experienced in Hearme/Paltalk. The music was excellent and there was such a variety of styles - in terms of getting a contrast between the singers/players while retaining a nice balance, it was the best mix I can remember. Not quite sure what happened to Max. He must have either got booted and was still showing on the list or fallen asleep at the computer! I doubt if Max does the latter but I have done that a few times over the past couple of years. Jon |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Katcina Date: 26 Feb 01 - 08:54 AM Done that myself Jon. Spent 4 days straight running a room with no sleep and my keyboard was imprinted in my forehead for a week after I woke up. One of the things that made the evening good was finally getting to hear Max perform. That was a real treat. Songmanofalaska comming back in to sing for us was another. Heck, I could fill several posts with all of the greats from last night. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Jon Freeman Date: 26 Feb 01 - 09:45 AM It's funny how it all goes - pretty much like a real life singers night in a folk club (which I have MC'd in the past) - you never know what it will be like or who will turn up until the night. The previous 2 nights had been pleasant but quiet and I found it quite hard work at times just to keep things going even though we managed to keep open until about 6:30. I had wondered whether to open up last night but I'm glad I did with the way things turned out and I had a much easier night as admin - I may be alone on this but I find a room with a reasonable number of people always willing (and better still putting their hands up in advance) far easier than a quiet room as they more or less run themselves and I can just sit back, listen and enjoy. As with the folk clubs, the occasional surprise visitor turns up and alsaka was one of those last night and he certainly added another dimension to it all. Jon |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Katcina Date: 26 Feb 01 - 10:16 AM I agree totally on the admin part Jon. It's always easier when preformers keep a line going for me so I don't have to be concerned with how I am going to get someone up there. I have done some strange things to keep a room going. Everything from telling childhood stories on myself to once singing a bit of "Dunderbeck". That last was a huge success at keeping them comming to the mic for a long time. People that haven't done it do not realise the work nor the personal concern that the room go well that an admin has. I really appreciate it whenever the musicians help make it easier. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Margaret V Date: 26 Feb 01 - 10:22 AM Last night was full of great stuff. I'm feeling nostalgic for the days when people would post what they played; it was a good way of referring back to the evening and having titles (and authors where applicable) in case one felt inspired to learn a song. Anyone else interested in that? I'll start (wait... this is the hard part... remembering what I played...!): well, as far as I remember I sang "Broken-Hearted I'll Wander" (trad) "Urge for Going" (J. Mitchell) "The Mortician's Daughter" (F. Johnston) "Down Where the Drunkards Roll" (R. Thompson) and I played "Bonny Portmore" and "Lady Gethin" on the harp. Margaret

Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: GUEST,Matt_R Date: 26 Feb 01 - 10:26 AM Thanks Margaret...I was wondering if we were still posting what songs we did..or if we'd dropped that. In any case, I played:
Luv --Travus |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: nutty Date: 26 Feb 01 - 10:33 AM I really do wish that sleep wouldn't keep getting in the way of all this enjoyment ...... seems as if I missed another great night |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Katcina Date: 26 Feb 01 - 10:38 AM What a great idea Margaret. I hope it catches and stays caught. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 26 Feb 01 - 11:00 AM Yes, last night was special. I try to make notes of the songs I like so I can request them again. Margaret's Bonny Portmore is always a favorite, and Jon's Donkey Riding is on THE LIST (along with I Once Loved a Lass, hint, hint.) Matt, I want to hear your fiddle again...and Sorcha!...I missed your fiddle earlier, hint, hint! |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: GUEST,Matt_R Date: 26 Feb 01 - 11:08 AM Wow..fiddle...it's been a while. I'm usually more harmonica-driven these days... |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Jon Freeman Date: 26 Feb 01 - 11:17 AM I can't remember much of what I did last night and I didn't do a lot. As well as Donkey Riding, I can remember playing Hola Hi and Valse Clogue/Man in the Moon on Melodeon and making a complete pigs ear of The FFV. Katcina, this idea is more one that was caught but somehow slipped the net. Jon |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Amergin Date: 26 Feb 01 - 11:18 AM I just sang Silent Voices. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Francy Date: 26 Feb 01 - 11:27 AM It was a wonderful evening of great music by all. I had just returned from Portland after a great song circle Sat nite, and was tired, but not too tired to join in. I think it's a good idea to list what you sang for other people to retain in the future and maybe use. I did two, "Stoney" by Jerry Jeff Walker and "Veteran's Day" by Tom Russell. On Paltalk I'm Toledo-3. My son put that in and I can't change it, or he won't let me use the computer. Oh well, we parents and our privileges. Thanks for the great song get-together and I'll be looking forward to others. Frand of Toledo |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Jon Freeman Date: 26 Feb 01 - 11:38 AM Glad to have you joining in with us Frank. I was about to say "Welcome to Mudcat" but I see you have been a member here longer than me. Jon |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Amergin Date: 26 Feb 01 - 11:46 AM Which Portland? |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Katcina Date: 26 Feb 01 - 12:02 PM I still can't help the urge to type HOLY TOLEDO!! every time you enter a room I am in Frank. You were great last night. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Amergin Date: 26 Feb 01 - 12:11 PM Katcina you just can't help the urge to talk... |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Francy Date: 26 Feb 01 - 12:24 PM Portland Oregon. I live on the central coast just a few miles in from Newport............ |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Amergin Date: 26 Feb 01 - 12:47 PM Oh cool!! I live just outside of Portland. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Katcina Date: 26 Feb 01 - 05:19 PM Watch out Frank. That puts you in a dangerously close proximity to him. |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: bigchuck Date: 26 Feb 01 - 05:42 PM What! You expect me to remember what I sang the next morning? I can barely remember my Granddaughter's names sometimes. Grumple, grumph....Oh all right. I remember doing City of Chicago (Christy Moore), Green Rolling Hills of West Virginia (Phillips), Georgie on the IRT, Oh You Engineer (Silverstein), Double Diamond (Garry MacMahan), Come Back Baby (Dupree), and played Hills of Lorne and Over the Waterfall on the mandola, plus some other stuff in the Snug Room earlier which I can't remember. Sandy |
Subject: RE: BS: Mudcat Song Circle Open From: Margaret V Date: 27 Feb 01 - 08:08 AM Great, I'm glad other folks are interested in the big play-list. As Jon pointed out, this was in no way my idea -- it was in place when I first came to HearMe. Okay, now to reveal the unpleasant archivist side of my personality.... does anyone else care whether the date of each song circle is accurately reflected in the thread title? Right now the date sometimes does and sometimes doesn't appear in the title (same with the Snug). I'm afraid to even think about what a forum search would yield... mind you, paltalk's FUN and I don't actually feel as compulsive about making it orderly as this might sound....! Margaret |
