Hallo all, I was wandering what kind of microphones do you bodhrán players use.??? I am getting sheinhauser 604 have anyone tryed that one???, if so let me know how you like it. all the best skarpi Iceland.. bless.

Sounds like a good swap...

Seriously, it would depend on how it's played.

If played 'damped' - more of a 'clicky' sound, something like a Shure SM57 or Sennheiser E845 should work well.

If played more 'open' - more of a bass drum sound than clicks, then the old AKG D12 (if you can find a good secondhand one) is the best bet.

If it's for recording purposes, the AKG C414 would be ideal, but very expensive.

Visit your local sound hire company, and get them to show you what mics they have. Hire one for a gig or two, until you find something you like.

actually, i just got the AKGC418, clip on mic, designed as a percussion mic.. used it this weekend for the first time... was really pleased....gives me the freedom to move about a bit on stage while playing.. not stuck to a stand mic..... resonable price too... $195 Cdn.....

$195 Canadian is NOT a reasonable price for a mic!! My tie-clip mic works great at 35 bucks from Radio Shack...

I wish my gigs supported me spending $195 on a bodhran mic!

I have a second hand AKG. (I don't know the model #) It's one of those tringular ones that are built like a tank. I tried a kick drum mic, and it sounded great for the bodhrán but not good at all for bones, shaker etc. I also, play a lot of high end stuff on my drum. Rim shots, flat hand inside the drum, glissandras, etc. I often end up playing every thing through one mic. (Like when the house PA turns out to only have 6 channels) At any rate, I paid $70 used about a year and a half ago and have never had any complaints. I've tried playing with those clip on things and the one obvious problem is you can't get closer or further away from the mic. Granted, you can do more with dynamics by tipper control, but why give up mic proximity if you don't have to. On a crowded stage it could be a good thing, but I'm pretty good at carving out enough space for a boom stand.

My $25 (Aus) tie clip from Tandy (Radio Shack) works great....... is the Sennhauser one the one that is shaped like a pencil, and lies flat along the rim of the drum? If so I ahve heard very good reports of them.. but wouldn't be prepared to spend so much on them.......

even playing the drum holding the skin near to a Shure vocal mic does a good job....

I use a Sure mic, on a boom stand.... though have been looking at the swan mics to clip to rim... just so I have a little more freedom to move more...

The bodhrán microphone that I use is a Beyerdynamic TG-X5 percussion mic, which has a flexible swan neck and a really simple clip-on clamp to attach it to the rim.

In democratic countries you should be free to own and posess a bodhran mike. What should be illegal however is plugging it in.

As I use Microvox systems for the concertinas I just put a Velcro pad on the inside of the rim pointing towards the skin. Also use them for whistles by sticking a pad below the fipple. The only time I really need to is when recording stuff.

No but it usually enables everyone else to be louder.

In order to make one quieter, it is necessary to use a different beater. I can recommend a Stanley knife.

usually clear plastic sound reducing barriers constructed around drum kits...

If you mean a bassy one you play with a stick as opposed to a high one played with your hands, I'd go for a jts tx-2, you can pick them up for £20 secondhand on eBay.

Here are my friends, Clan Hannigan, Steaf (Dad), Saskia (Mom) and Oisin (Son).
If you listen to the whole video GUEST, you'll notice that both Steafan and Oisin use their hands as well as a stick.
GUEST,patriot will notice that they sometimes play with jingles on the tambourine as well.

I think Skarpi deserves a serious answer. There's a discussion and some useful looking advice in This thread on gearslutz.com.

It looks like the all purpose SM57 is a possibility. The suggestion of a Beyerdynamic M201 is probably a good one: I have one of those and it does everything an SM57 does, but better.

It depends to some extent on whether you are talking about recording (which I think the Gearslutz thread is about) or live sound. Also, especially with any kind of drums, the position of the microphone will make a big difference to the sound, so you need to experiment.
