I'm the adventurous one.I could be playing or listening to, well, ANYTHING. We share a love of folk and classical. He's crazy for bagpipes. I really couln't appreciate the old Johnny Horton tape he had, or the "Trucker" songs.

I have a group of interesting, caring girlfriends whose company I enjoy immensely. They all share the same fault: they don't like folk music! Opera and classical are more their speed. I need not mention the friend who still worships the Doors. Oh well.

Reen, you just need to get a girlfriend who likes the same kind of concerts you do. It would be even better if her husband was just as boring musically as yours; then they could sit at home and nod off on the couch while the two of you go to see Gordon Bok or Elizabeth Cotten or whoever's in town.

Mousethief, your Lady is my kind of girl! Love Jean Redpath. Understand, the only instrument I can play is my stereo. That said, my old china will tolerate most of my music. Out of respect for him, I save the bagpipes and such for in the car or when he's not home. He really prefers smooooooooooth jazz and soft rock, you know, snooze music. So I generally miss live performances or go alone. Doesn't that sound pathetic? ;- (

Tim and my musical tastes are broadly similar and very wide ranging. I have a liking for Opera which he dispises, a tolerence for things with a jazzy influence which he can't bear and tendancy to certain novelty records which he adopts a sort of smug isn't she quaint attitude to. I do find some of the heavier rock stuff a tad old hat (ie the current American stuff - Limp Biscuit - you need to lighten up) and we do have problems when he hits an obsessive phase. The main problem is his tendancy to buy CDs while I'm working on my 10 year plan to rid us of all debt and set us up for life. We are also running out of room.

Now our daughter Cat complains that she is the only person she knows of her age who likes her parents music - although some of the folk song is too traditional for her (at the moment). It brings a warm feeling to your heart when you are sitting working on the computer listening her join in to the greates punk anthems ever. Perhaps that's why she wants purple streaks in her hair!

I don't know what I would do if Tim and I didn't go out an bounce up and down at concerts together- it would certainly cut the amount we talk to each other down dramatically.

My Beautiful Wife (of 37 years standing) is a classical pianist. One of the things that made me immediately attractive when we met, she says, was my taste in music--classical guitar, some chamber music, symphonic-- and a large collection of folk music records. I wooed her, in part, singing Robert Burns' "Bonnie Wee Thing" to her. I still call her "Bonnie Wee Thing" occasionally.

One problem: I'll be playing the banjo in the living room, and she will banish me to other parts of the house because she has to practice the piano. You can't tuck a 5' 6" Steinway Grand under your arm and take it elsewhere, can you?

Mrs. John (Joy) is not much into music these days. Occcsionally I catch her listening to the Music of Your Life type station, but that's about it.

Most folk music is "no teeth music" to her, but she has seen Patty Larkin and enjoyed, Peggy Seeger not as well and is going to see Nancy Griffith with me tonight. But I usually go to folk events sans herself.

Interestingly enough, and quite surprising to me, she loves Dave Van Ronk's version of "Both Sides Now". Go figger!----John

Spice and I met folkdancing, and shared an interest in Balkan and Israeli music and 60s-era folk that is going on 35 years now. She prefers to be elsewhere when I'm stacking Celtic on the CD player, however, and I really don't understand Prarie Home Companion's attraction for her.

Karen jonasen - if my boyfriend put in a tape while I was singing, I'd dump him on the side of the road. Talk about rude! If he doens't like it, asking you please not to politely might be acceptable, but putting on a tape is like putting on the jukebox at a live music session. (seen that done...)

My current boyfriend and I don't share much in the way of musical tastes - he likes modern alternative stuff, Radiohead, Divine Comedy, and lots of bands I haven't heard of, and my taste is very... varied... but I can listen to his and not mine, and he at least doesn't complain about mine. Our opinions meet in the classical zone, fortunately.

Better than my ex, who liked lots of trance / hardcore dance music, and lots of the recent pop stuff that all sounds the same. (not the distinction - it doesn't all sound the same, just some of it.) I could tolerate a little bit, but...

My Extremely Beloved's guilty secret is that she listens to Top 40 radio every chance she gets -- you know, boom WHACK boom boom WHACK. She has little or no interest in cowboy, traditional, or modern folk music. Except when I play it. She'll listen to me do other people's songs for hours but couldn't be bothered to spend five minutes listening to the originals. Better than the other way around, I s'pose. The only people I can think of off the top of my head that we listen to together are Dire Straits, Chris Spheeris, and Vivaldi. Would I trade her for someone who likes all the music I like? Nuh-uh, no way, never. This here's one cowboy who knows when he's well off.

I'm married to a rock'n'roll drummer and at first he squawked loudly when I played Folk, calling it that old hippy stuff. After listening for almost two years and going to two FSGW Getaways, he has fallen in love with Folk and actually instigates listening to my CD's. Yes!

I have no spouse :-( but I'm in the car a LOT with my sister, she usually doesn't mind the stuff I play...in fact she enjoys a lot of it...which is pretty cool coming from someone who isn't into listening to music a lot. As far as I can tell, the only thing she doesn't like is Bob Dylan. She's pretty much banned him from the car.

My soulmate and lover of 7 months and I share the same tastes in music, mostly blues. When I played the "Crossroads" CD for her she was hooked. She had always liked blues but I was the first person in her life who had an extensive blues collection. Sometimes we put the "Crossroads" CD in and let it play all night.(Good thing it's not vinyl or it would have been replaced several times by now!!! LOL) We both appreciate most blues but both prefer the old blues or at least the new versions of the old blues.........Jim and Katie

Mark & I have pretty similar tastes. He's not keen on too much undiluted balladry, but other than that we agree on most things. He goes off to the bar in undiluted ballad sessions, so he's quite happy.

The Other Half and I have plenty of duplicates in our CD collection. One of the reaons we became friends in the first place was our similar music tastes. He's not into traditional Irish and folk as much as I would be, although he has a fondness for Planxty. He doesn't like musicals (I love 'em) and announced he was going to crash the car after my fourth rendition of "Getting to Know You", and I'm not sure if he meant it as a statement or a threat.

I realised living with my partner wasn't going to work when he left the room whenever I started singing or if I sang in the car, he immediately put on a loud rock tape. Once he'd moved out, I found myself singing all the time and my mental health was a helluva lot better! I think tolerance is what's important. I never complained about his music, only the volume

We both like many different kinds of music, but it is usually me who has something on. Fortunately, he is amendable to whatever that might be and quite often very interested. I would find it very difficult to live with someone who didn't share my love of music, esp. Even my first ex and I shared a love of the Doors and my second ex and I a love of Joan Baez and some other folkies! **BG**

The Yorkshire Tornado is into several kinds of music I'm not — opera, show tunes, Beach Boys, Beatles and various kinds of Latin. I can tolerate all in small doses except opera and the Beatles, so she must plays those when I'm not around. I love blues, which she can take only in small doses, so I return the favor.

We're extremely lucky, however, that we both like most other genres of folk music, we tend to like the same classical composers — she's a little higher on Elgar than I am — and our travelling music is likely to be Ray Stevens, Ravi Shankar, Ian Tyson and the first 10 years of rock'n'roll. We also both like bagpipes and "Celtic" (both in fairly small doses).

All in all, it works out pretty well.

Well, as my husband is also my partner in crime when it comes to making music , it's a damn good thing we do share similar tastes. His tended more to blues and mine to folk when we met but we've both shifted since then and now I'm really into blues and he's getting into folk. We both share unstinting admiration for the songs he writes or we write together .

My flatmate bought a violin just because it was £30 in a closing down sale at the local music store. For a whole week I suffered as she taught herself to scrape the first few notes of Auld Lang Syne (she chose this because she thought it would be 'easy'). She played it through once, and now the violin is behind the sofa, where it has lain for 10 months.

When Manitas and I got together the only records we had in common were the Kipper family 'Since time immoral' and the Goon's Ying Tong song.

He has since enlightened me to the older bands and singers, and I've turned all the tapes in his car into the Best of Queen....

Funny how when you actually want to listen to the best of Queen, all tapes then turn into Ally McBain.

Geoff and I met, got engaged and got married at Whitby folk week (3 successive years-we took 2 week old twins to the fourth) so on the whole we enjoy the same genre of music but within that there are people I like that he doesn't and vice versa. We included the lines 'I promise to sing, dance and make music together' in our wedding vows so that says something. Coincidently we also discovered we had duplicate albums from outside the folk scene so its not just one area we agree on.

I'm just nuts about Old-time music. Tommy Jarrell, Fred Cockerham, Kyle Creed, Wade Ward, in fact the whole Ward family, you get the idea. Then there are the new guys. Among them I include The New Lost City Ramblers, the Highwoods Stringband, a west coast group that only made one LP, the Gyspy Gyppo Stringband. The Missus writes off all that stuff as "silly old chicken songs." But get this, she likes Uncle Dave Macon! What a hoot! But she hates Gid Tanner & the Skillet Lickers. I don't get it.

Like everything else about me, Karen tolerates it. I listen to some of the radio with her while driving and all, and we do share a few people we both like. She likes Ungar and Mason, Arlo, Emmylou, and Tom Petty which we share.......Then we swap back and forth and listen to each other's stuff. There are some good individual albums that we both enjoy for different reasons too. Not too big a deal around here Mike.
