Hi Susanne,
If it's John Wayne's Quiet Man you're looking for, then you can find the soundtrack and some sound clips here

It's my all time favourite film.....one day I'll live in a cottage like that with roses round the door......a girl can dream!!!

best wishes, Yvonne

Finbar Wright sings "Isle of Innisfree" on The Irish Tenors' "Live In Belfast" CD. I've been unable to determine if it's traditional or was written for the movie, however. "I think I'll join me comrades, and talk a little treason..."

What was the pretty little song Maureen O'Hara sang at the piano when she finally got it back?

"The Isle of Innsfree", of which there appears to be no such place, was written for the movie.

"The Rakes of Mallow" is the primary song we, in these parts, use for a "Siege of Innis", followed by almpest anyother reel, but always ending with "Mallow"

There is alittle jig that keeps popping up from time to time that sounds like a harmony version of "Haste to the Wedding".

To my way of thinking, John Wayne deserved and oscar many times but none more so than he did with this film. Not quite the short story, By Jack Finney I believe, but a good solid glimpse at rural Irish life as seen by John Ford.

Ward Bond makes a believeable priest and a more believeable trout/salmon fisherman. Be sure to watch the full length film, not the shortened for commercial television film that is out and about.

No, Virginia, there is no "Innsfree," but luckily, the setting is the lake isle of Inishfree, which exists indeed--my step-dancing shoes came from that lovely location.

Forgot to mention the song the men are singing when they deliver the furniture the morning after the wedding. I'm not sure of the title but I think some call it the Mush Mush song;

"With me Mushmushmush toor-a-li-addy
Me mushmushmush toor-a-li-ay
I larupped him with me shillelagh
For he tread on the tail o' me coat".

A very funny moment in the film as most of them are a wee bit tipsy. Does anyone know the real title, or do I have it right?

Fitzgerald was terrific, -"And who gave you leave to be playing patty fingers in the holy water?" "When I drink whiskey I drink whiskey, when I drink water I drink water." Heard today that Victor McGlaughlin went 6 rounds with Jack Johnson. Oh hell, the picture was flawless. Mickey191 N.Y.

Is there any other movie whose dialogue is memorized by the public? (Perhaps Casablanca has a few lines) I saw the Quiet Man about 100 times as an usher in Pelham, N.Y.. There never was such a crowd pleaser, and I was asked countless times what Fitzgerald said when he spied the broken bed.The laughter drowned out his response. Mickey191

I can't honestly say, as I have the impression that the poem isn't meant to indicate a real place. I remember, vaguely, that "Inishfree," as with many other Irish place-names is an anglicization of a more ancient name in the Irish: "Inis Fraoigh," or "Island of the Meadow."

The only real "Inishfree" that I know of is on Lough Gill, county Sligo. This may or may not be the Isle of the poem.

While reading in an attempt to find all these answers, I find that The Quiet Man, ostensibly set it Inishfree, was actually filmed in the village of Cong, county Mayo. And here I've always wanted to visit Inishfree and see if it looks like the movie version. Guess not.

If you should ever encounter, say, fans of Mel Brooks or Monty Python, you'll hear movie quotes galore. Python-maniacs, especially, seem to memorize every detail of every scene of everything ever done by the Pythons.

As to your other question, I believe Mr. F., noting the broken bed and putting two and two together (or so he thought), said as his verdict: "Impetuous!"

It's sometimes called "The Tail of Me Coat"; or, simply, "Mush, mush". Words are in DigiTrad

There are 2 Inishfrees - the Lake Isle , and one of the smaller of the Aran Islands. The music used for the song in the film is clearly the same music as that used for the the Foster and Allan song "Isle of Inishfree" but the lyrics are not the same. tHE fOSTER AND aLLAN VERSION STARTS WITH "i'VE MET SOME FOLKS THAT SAY THAT i'M A DREAMER/ aND i'VE NO DOUBT THERE'S TRUTH IN WHAT THEY SAY/ bUT SURE A BODY'S BOUND TO BE A DREAMER/ wHEN ALL THE THINGS HE LOVES ARE FAR AWAY". Still so lovely!

"Mind you, I'm as fresh as a Daisy." "You look more like a black-eyed Susan to me!"

No Inishfree in the Aran Islands - you're probably thinking of the one off the coast of Donegal.

There is no town of Innisfree. But there is an uninhabited island in Lough Gill (a lake) with the name Innisfree, in County Sligo. That's the little island that Yeats wrote about.

Hello

Re: "The Isle of Innisfree"

I came across this interesting thread and I hope I can clear up a few misconceptions.

The song was written by my Dad, Irish songwriter Dick Farrelly in 1949 and it was published in 1950. It was actually not written for "The Quiet Man" but just another of many songs my dad wrote during his lifetime. During the making of "The Quiet Man" film director John Ford on hearing the song which was at the time a worldwide hit for Bing Crosby, loved it so much that he sought permission to use it as the film's main theme. He named the village of "Innisfree" in its honour taking it from the song's title, that's where the place "Innisfree" in the movie came from.

The "Isle of Innisfree" my father was writing about was in fact Ireland, another name for Ireland; not a village or the tiny island on Lough Gill in Co. Sligo.

Below are Wikipedia links for "The Isle of Innisfree" and "Dick Farrelly" which some of you who love the film and the soundtrack may be interested in reading.

I am 'tickled pink' to have found the words and title to the song sang by Berry Fitzgerald in the Quiet Man - the mushmush song -DigiTriad. We saw the movie #again# recently and I awakened to try to sing it but realize I din't have a clue as to the words.

I'm happy that I am not alone in my love of this sweet story and I'm not the only one who has memorized a great deal of the dialog.

Signed:
Another lover of GREAT MUSIC and MOVIES ;)
