Subject: McArthur/Bryan Bowers folk songs From: GUEST,jobrien@fec.gov Date: 01-Mar-01 - 03:22 PM

I am looking for a folk song by Bryan Bowers (the Seattle auto harpist) would like lyrics and possible recordings it might be on--it was about Adam and Eve and the sixties and I think it starts: "Oh Adam get away from that tree, you'll pick the apple and they'll blame it on me!"

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm wondering if it is Bowers. I have checked several discogaraphies, and it's not on any album I can find....

I have heard Bryan do it live at least twice in concerts in DC, many years ago, but have never been able to find it on any of his recordings or anywhere else. Always assumed he wrote it, but could be wrong. That and another song he used to do called the Dogs They Had a Party to the tune of the Church's One Foundation.

I have all of his CDs and don't remember this one. I'll check when I get home.

Driving me crazy. I have heard this song (not sure if it was Bowers) and I know I have a recording of it. Only a couple of hundred LPs to go. I hate when this happens. Somebody help. I can even remember an introduction to the effect that this was a women's lib song (tongue in cheek).

It's Bryan Bowers' "Garden of Eden". I have it along with his introduction of how it came to him in a dream on a tape of an 80's concert from the World Theater in St. Paul, MN. I guess I should sit down and transcribe it , huh.

Here it is with a couple uncertainties concerning specific words in parentheses.

THE GARDEN OF EDEN (Bryan Bowers)

Eve told Adam, get away from that tree
You'll pick the apple and they'll blame it on me.
I'm quite content to live as we are,
But you, poor fool, you wanna be a star.
And God has given us paradise
And before you act, you better think twice
He warned us clear and plain as could be,
To eat of everything but not of that tree.
Then Adam picked the apple while Eve finished his pants
And the pendulum of the ages began its cursed dance

Jesus told the devil on top of a hill,
Get thee behind me, with a look that could kill.
I need your riches like a hole in the head
And you still haven't heard a word God said.
The father I love gives me peace in my heart
When life's road is crooked and the way is dark.
Helps me through the night until I sing out soaring,
Thank you for the dawn and its glory
While the children here in Eden never cast a backward glance
And the pendulum of the ages continues its eternal dance.

And I don't want you're one night stand,
Get another man to kick up your sand
I need about a week just to cut through (roles),
And (quick) has only put holes in my soul.
The woman I love holds my head to her breast
When (the asthma or miasma?) comes, it crunches my chest.
Rocks me through the night when I wake up screaming
What about the 60's, were we dreaming?
With our flowers and gun barrels, give peace a chance,
While the pendulum of the ages continues its eternal dance

Eve told Adam, get away from that tree
You'll pick the apple and they'll blame it on me.

rich r
