But I often think as I tumble into bed, of little WILLIE WEE and he's dead dead dead. Part of Polly Garter's song from the greatest piece of literature in the English language that I've ever read. I'm sure that someone out there has all the words, and can input them quicker than me, but if anyone wants them all I can always listen to the tapes again and transcribe, but it would probably take forever. Subject: RE: How many UK catters: Part 3 From: Gareth Date: 06 Jul 01 - 02:11 PM A Pint of S.A. to Pavane for getting it correct, And a pint of whatever Matthew Edwards wishes to drink - for first up - Sorry Matthew the BBC "bowdlerised" Llareggub and the edit stuck. I'll have a go at transcribing Polly Garters Song on Sunday, if nobody has posted it first. The Cats Whiskers Skull Attack aka Brains S.A. A local Cardiff Brew, strong & bitter bitter. Not a session beer, its in the Youngs Special or Fullers ESB catagory. Your probably right in suggesting its not the Ale for a long evening. To be honest a fammily illness has kept me confined to drinking within a few minutes walk of home for the last 2 years. But any suggestions for venues near General, or Queen St Station would be appreciated. Gareth |
Subject: RE: How many UK catters: Part 3 From: Matthew Edwards Date: 06 Jul 01 - 12:05 PM RE Llaregyb.pavane, I spelt it that way because thats the way its printed in my copy of Under Milk Wood.BTW has anyone posted Polly Garter's song here? |
Subject: RE: How many UK catters: Part 3 From: The Cat's Whiskers Date: 06 Jul 01 - 04:24 AM Sooooo... Where are the best folk clubs/venues in the Cardiff area then? I must admit, I'm pretty stumped. Do they all insist on mics and amps and Big Scarey Things like those? Eeeeeek! Prefer the quieter accoustic thingummy m'self. And could someone tell me what "Skull Attack" is please! Sounds like a drink that heavy metal fans knock back, not a peaceable, romantic, folkie beverage at all... TCW |
Subject: RE: How many UK catters: Part 3 From: pavane Date: 06 Jul 01 - 02:46 AM Why hide the origins of Dylan Thomas's fictional village by misspelling the name? Llareggub is 'bugger all' spelt backwards, deliberately by the author. |
Subject: RE: How many UK catters: Part 3 From: Matthew Edwards Date: 05 Jul 01 - 08:16 PM That has to be the Reverend Eli Jenkins, poet and preacher, from "the small town, starless and bible-black" of Llaregyb. I'm not sure I could cope with a pint of Skull Attack, but perhaps I could follow Willy Nilly postman's example and down a bucket of black brackish tea! nos da,Matthew |
Subject: RE: How many UK catters: Part 3 From: Gareth Date: 05 Jul 01 - 07:22 PM South Wales This calls for a meet somewhere. Suggest somewhere within staggering distance from Cardiff General (sorry Central Station for the younger generation) om say a Friday or Saturday. Just a thought. Now for the quiz. "Thank the Lord we are a musical Nation". Who, and which backwards Welsh Village. First correct answer posted wins a pint of "Skull Atack" in a Kairdiff Pub. Gareth (aka Garydd)

Given half a chance I'm sure she would have quite happily physically destroyed the place as well. However we are still here, abstaining against whichever government happens to be in power! Actually I am a Brummie by birth, Welsh and Lancastrian and Black Country by ancestry, and spent a muddled childhood getting comprehensively miseducated in Birmingham, Dublin,Ann Arbour in Michigan, Colchester,Willamstown Mass., and Norwich, until I ended up here quarter of a century ago. Wuth these divided loyalties I support England in cricket, Ireland in rugby, Tranmere Rovers in soccer,Wales for mountain walking, the Holy Modal Rounders against the spirit of blandness in American music, and finally Harry Cox against the world in singing! |

Subject: RE: How many UK catters: Part 3 From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 12 May 01 - 05:49 AM But Sue M, it looks like you're not truly in the club yet! Membership has one or two advantages (you can track the threads that interest you, and send private messages direct to other catters without having to disclose email address, etc) and of course it costs nothing. But maybe you're stuck with having to use other people's PCs. |

Subject: RE: How many UK catters: Part 3 From: Sue vG Date: 11 May 01 - 01:47 PM Bob and I are Cheshire Sweetie - but don't hold that against us! Actually Bob comes from Anglesey and I was born and raised in Manchester, but they are both North of Watford so I guess we qualify as Northerners! We have also introduced someone from Chipping Campden and someone from Sth Normanton in Derbyshire so you can add them to the list too. Sue vG |

Subject: RE: How many UK catters: Part 3 From: bill\sables Date: 02 Mar 01 - 07:10 PM Here are the results so far; I have put All of Scotland under Scotland and All of Wales under Wales. Yorkshire is all North South East and West, from the Humber up to the Tees Other counties are as they were before new ones were introduced eg. Manchester is still in Lancashire. You may notice that one or two places have lost people, Wales has lost a few because some people have moved and some whom I thought were in Wales in fact lived in Shropshire. This is a list made up from those who have posted to this thread and others I know exist Cheers Bill Scotland 12 Wales 8
England 132
Yorkshire 45
