Subject: Lyr Add: AMAZING GRASS and TANK OF ALUMINUM
From: Suffet
Date: 02 Mar 01 - 06:03 AM

While I do not advocate drug abuse of any form, I believe it's a crying shame that we have so many wonderful songs about alcohol (for and agin) but so few about marijuana. Heck, I can even think of more songs about opiates ("Willie the Weeper") and about cocaine than I can about pot! Well, I have done my best to remedy the situation. Please take note of the two songs that follow.

--- Steve

---------------------------

AMAZING GRASS

Words: Stephen L. Suffet © 1997, 2001
Music: "Amazing Grace" by John Newton

Amazing grass, how sweet the smoke,
To make a wretch like me,
I once was straight, but now I'm stoned,
I'm blind when once I could see.

Twas grass alone that made me so,
To idle away my time,
To waste my days in a smokey haze,
Twas amazing grass sublime.

And now I've pissed my life away,
And from this world shall pass,
I clear my throat, and prepare to smoke,
From Heaven's amazing grass.

Amazing grass, how sweet the smoke,
To make a wretch like me,
I once was straight, but now I'm stoned,
I'm blind when once I could see.

TANK OF ALUMINUM

Words: Stephen L. Suffet © 2001
Music: "Copper Kettle" by Albert F. Beddoe

Get you a tank of aluminum,
Aluminum or stainless steel,
Fill it with good plant nutrients,
And the seeds from your latest deal...

And you'll lie there watching videos,
Eating pizza day and night,
As your plants keep growing,
In the artificial light.

Buy your supplies with currency,
Never let down your guard,
Don't buy anything on the Internet,
Or pay with a credit card...

And you'll lie there watching videos,
Eating pizza day and night,
As your plants keep growing,
In the artificial light.

My daddy brought weed in from Mexico,
But that was way back then,
And maybe in a year or two,
He'll get out of the pen...

And you'll lie there watching videos,
Eating pizza day and night,
As your plants keep growing,
In the artificial light.

Quite a few jazz tunes make references to marihuana, usually as "tea","gage" or "maryjane". Louis Armstrong was a daily user of "wacky baccy".

"Talking Vietnam Potluck Blues"? "Minnie the Moocher" is a seriously doped-up song - there was a thread about that a while back.

That first one is great - I know a few ppl who'd appreciate it.

There's 'La Cucuracha' (or however you spell it) It means something like:
The cockroach, the cockroach
He can't walk
Because he's not no marijuana to smoke.
Correct me if I'm barking up the wrong'un folks!
Also, on a lyrics search once, I got onto a 'Silly Lyrics' site. (Don't remember how to find it, suggestions welcome) and they had a song to the tune of 'The Monster Mash' called 'Monster Hash':
They smoked some hash(they smoked some monster hash)
They smoked some hash (from his personal stash)...and so on.
What about Light 'em up y'all
Light 'em up y'all...

From: GUEST,Fretless
Date: 02 Mar 01 - 08:38 AM

Panama Red

Lyrics: Peter Rowan
Music: Peter Rowan

Jerry played this in 1973 with Peter Rowan in Old And In The Way.

Panama Red, Panama Red
He'll steal your woman, then he'll rob your head
Panama Red, Panama Red
On his white horse, Mescalito
He come breezin' through town
I'll bet your woman's up in bed with
Panama Red

The judge don't know when Red's in town
He keeps well hidden underground
But everybody's acting lazy
Falling out and hangin' 'round

My woman said, "Hey Pedro
you're actin' crazy like a clown"
Nobody feels like working
Panama Red is back in town

[chorus]

Everybody's looking out for him
'Cause they know Red's satisfies
Little girls love to listen to him
Sing and tell sweet lies

But when things get too confusing, honey
You're better off in bed
And I'll be searching all the joints in town for
Panama Red

[chorus]

Recordings

1 Oct 1973 Breakdown (Old And In The Way)
8 Oct 1973 Old And In The Way

Peter Rowan recorded this in 1978 on "Peter Rowan." The New Riders recorded it on "The Adventures Of Panama Red" and a number of other albums (including a backward version on "Before Time Began"!).

Some researcher has deduced from traces found in pipes in the garden of Shakespeare's house in Stratford that there was chemical asistance to the bard's works.
Following on from that, the same team that found the earliest attempt by the HFA to claim copyright of a traditional tune, have unearthed a hitherto unknown Shakespearian manuscript, extracts below:
"To be, and wow, man, like, you know, maybe not to be, whether 'tis nobler in the blown mind to suffer, man, how I suffer, (giggle) the slings and arrows, whoah, don't talk arrows, man they hurt, bad kharma.." and "'twas a lover and his groovy chick, man, with a no and hey nonny, nonny, nonny nonny nonny, (giggle) nonny, nonny ,nooooo, far out , man."

Now you ask was I holdin', I said they no I'm not holdin
I thought you were holdin it's true
So here you're not holdin you thought I was holdin
My dear what on earth will you do
Now you know when I'm holdin
there's no need you holdin
And you know the same about me
And if you run out before I run out
You know you could get some from me
But if you ain't got none and if I ain't got none
Let's go find some other hit
Find out if they're holdin, get down and start rollin

From: catspaw49
Date: 02 Mar 01 - 10:24 AM

Here's one mentioned and not in the DT or on the forum:

DON'T BOGART THAT JOINT

Lyrics: Elliot Ingber
Music: Elliot Ingber

Played by Little Feat's Paul Barrere and Bill Payne with Phil & Friends. The original verson (on the soundtrack of "Easy Rider") was by Fraternity Of Man. It was subsequently covered by Little Feat.

Chorus:
Don't bogart that joint my friend
Pass it over to me
Don't bogart that joint my friend
Pass it over to me

Roll another one
Just like the other one
You've been holding on to it
And I sure will like a hit

[chorus]

Roll another one
Just like the other one
That one's burned to the end
Come on and be a real friend

[chorus]

Subject: Lyr Add: ONE TOKE OVER THE LINE
From: Sorcha
Date: 02 Mar 01 - 10:37 AM

One Toke Over The Line
(Brewer & Shipley)
One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

Who do you love I hope it's me
I've been a changin' as you can plainly see
I felt the joy and I learned about the pain that my momma said
If I should choose to make a part of me will surely strike me dead
And now I'm

One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

I sail away a country mile
And now I'm returning and showing off my smile
I met all the girls and I loved myself a few
And to my surprise
Like everything else that I've been through
It opened up my eyes
And now I'm

One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Don't you know I'm just
Waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Don't you know I'm just
Waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

I was born to give and take
And as I keep growin' I'm gonna make some mistakes
The sun's gonna set and the bird is gonna wing they do not lie
My last wish will be just one thing
Be smilin' when I die
I wanna be

One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Don't you know I'm just
Waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
I wanna be
One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
One toke

You should all check out this great band from Austin, Texas called the Asylum Street Spankers. They play a mixture of styles from Western Swing, to Old Time, to Tin Pan Alley. They play all acoustic, no amps, no mics, just voices and acoustic instruments, and they sound great. Anyway, their last album, called "Spanker Madness" is basically all about beer and marijuana, both old songs and songs they wrote that sound old. Titles include "High as You can be," "Winning the War on Drugs," "Wake and Bake" "Knock Myself Out," "Amsterdam," "Gettin' High," and "It's Dry Down Here." They are downright hilarious. Check them out if you get a chance.

Subject: Lyr Add: BURN ONE DOWN
From: Max
Date: 02 Mar 01 - 12:05 PM

This my favorite one. By Ben Harper.

Burn One Down

Let us burn one
from end to end
and pass it over
to me my friend
burn it long, we'll burn it slow
to light me up before I go

if you don't like my fire
then don't come around
cause I'm gonna burn one down
yes I'm gonna burn one down

my choice is what I choose to do
and if I'm causing no harm
it shouldn't bother you
your choice is who you choose to be
and if your causin' no harm
then you're alright with me

if you don't like my fire
then don't come around
cause I'm gonna burn one down
yes I'm gonna burn one down

herb the gift from the earth
and what's from the earth
is of the greatest worth
so before you knock it try it first
you'll see it's a blessing
and not a curse

if you don't like my fire
then don't come around
cause I'm gonna burn one down
yes I'm gonna burn one down

Subject: Lyr Add: YOU DON'T KNOW HOW IT FEELS
From: catspaw49
Date: 02 Mar 01 - 12:08 PM

Here's one vaguely related but interesting in that the lyric was changed for the airplay version to "let's hit another joint" implying another bar, but the censor folks must have missed that with "hit" and "joint" together, it wasn't a big difference.

YOU DON'T KNOW HOW IT FEELS ....Tom Petty

Let me run with you tonight
I'll take you on a moonlight ride
There's someone I used to see
But she don't give a damn for me

But let me get to the point, let's roll another joint
And turn the radio loud, I'm too alone to be proud
You don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels to be me

People come, people go
Some grow young, some grow cold
I woke up in between
A memory and a dream

So let's get to the point, let's roll another joint
Let's head on down the road
There's somewhere I gotta go
And you don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels to be me

My old man was born to rock
He's still tryin' to beat the clock
Think of me what you will
I got a little space to fill

So let's get to the point, let's roll another joint
Let's head on down the road
There's somewhere I gotta go
And you don't know how it feels
No, you don't know how it feels to be me

STRIKE A MATCH AND LIGHT ANOTHER
(Jay Ungar)

In the first days of this country when the buffalo roamed the land
And the saddle tramps and cowboys used to roll their own by hand
They'd get up in the saddle of their mule or of their horse
And recite a little ditty that went like this of course

When your feet are in the stirrups and your ass is on the ground
'Cos the grass that he's been eating is the finest stuff around
So let us all remember boys, let us not forget
Strike a match and light another marijuana cigarette

You have heard of evil and you've heard of misery
And you've heard of Richard Nixon but you haven't heard of me
Well put them all together and think about what you gout
'Cos you won't be doing too much thinking now you've started smoking pot

You can smoke it, you can eat it, you can drink it with your beer
You can hang it all the wall or you can hang it from your ear
And if he's got the notion and if you've got the class
You can stuff it in your feedback and feed it to your ass.

Instead of Richard Nixon (which dates the song somewhat) I sing Slobodan Milosovitch (funny name, funny guy). Or you could replace it with the Mudcatter of your choice.

For anyone who remembers the 'Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers' there was a page with these words with illustrations by Gilbert Shelton featuring the Freak Brothers.

Peace, man
Les

Subject: Lyr Add: REEFER MAN
From: GUEST,Wendy
Date: 02 Mar 01 - 02:34 PM

I've always enjoyed Cab Calloway's "Reefer Man", because it's just so goofy. I think Don Redman did it too. I found the lyrics below at this site , which seems to be a list of drug related songs and their lyrics.

There's also this site, posted by the Indiana Prevention Resource Center at Indiana University: SOURCES OF OLD-TIME DRUG MUSIC .

THE REEEFER MAN
(sung by Cab Calloway)

Oh, have you ever met that funny reefer man?
Oh, have you ever met that funny reefer man?
If he says he swam to China:
He sell you South Carolina
Then you know you're talking to that reefer man.

Have you ever met that funny reefer man?
Have you ever met that funny reefer man?
If he says he walks the ocean
Every time he takes the notion
Then you know you're talking to that reefer man.

Have you ever met a funny reefer man?
Have you ever met a funny reefer man?
If he takes a sudden mania
Wants to give you Pennsylvania
Then you know you're talking to that reefer man.

The site omitted my favorite verse, which as I recall it, goes:

Have you ever met that funny reefer man?
Have you ever met that funny reefer man?
If he trades you dimes for nickels
And calls watermelons pickles,
Then you know you're talking to that reefer man.

Dear Hearts,

How cool, so many songs I had forgotten, and even more I never heard of!

I was planning on asking why nobody thought of "Rainy Day Women..." -- but Grab came through...

So, I'll just mention a line Brother Dave Gardner (the comedian guy Fox got the idea for his Redneck motif from) had in his outrageous story about "Charles and Sue".

These two sweet kids are in the restaurant about to leave and Sue says, "Let's blow this joint!

Charles says, "No, pass it on to the waitress...!"

And them southern audience people, ya know they laffed!

Sooooooo, they been growing more than okra and green beans, back in the '50's...

The Klezmatics do a Jiddish song called Mizmor shir lehanef (Reefer Song. It translates as follows:

Shabbos brings Jews rest, repose equilibrium. every morning is Shabbos for me-am I really so religious? I'm really so religious. When I light up a spliff and start to do allright, feel real good.

Funfe is the Yiddish word for what's called a reefer in English. The Maggid of Mezz Mezritch says "It's GodS' best medium of consolation." It causes the Shekhina to be spread out upon whoever's smoking. It's a tikkun for the spirit.

Smoke a spliff-cannabis

I'll praise the Lord, sing to God the creator of the world A song of coughing because he has given every generation A herb which represents the earthly Wild Ox. I sing, I touch the sky and, excuse me, go a little bit farther.

A tangential mention in Brewer and Shipley's "Oh, Mommy"...

Also (and yet more tangential), according to his bio by Albert Goldman, Lenny Bruce used to sing a version of "Mona Lisa" with the chorus augmented thus: "Pass the reefer, Mona Lisa".

Jaime Brockett's Legend of the Titantic is a great one. It's about 20 minutes long and Jaime is talkin' real fast throughout, so I am NOT going to post the lyrics. I used to have a link to the entire transcription, but I just tried it and it's dead. Anyway, the gist is that a guy who used to work in a rope factory gets a job as a mate on the Titantic. Took 497 1/2 feet of rope on board with him (I just carry it (hee hee)). If you get a chance, listen to it - great 60's stoned rap song.

PASSING BOO

Words: Stephen L. Suffet © 1997, 2001
Music: "Passing Through" by Richard Blakeslee © 1948

I heard the sirens sound, and the squad cars came around,
They brought out their guns and night sticks, too.
Wow! I thought it's somethin' thrillin', like maybe another killin',
But it's just a bunch of pot-heads passin' boo.

Passin' boo, passin' boo,
Panama red or 'pulco gold,
It don't matter young or old,
When you're just another pot-head passin' boo.

There are murderers galore, thieves are jimmyin' the door,
There's the Cosa Nostra and all their bloody crew,
But instead of fightin' crime, cops are spendin' all their time,
A-bustin' all the pot-heads passin' boo.

Passin' boo, passin' boo,
Let me roll a joint for you,
Then you'll take a toke or two,
And you're just another pot-head passin' boo.

Well, I hope you like my song, and I know it isn't long,
And when I'm done guess what I'm gonna do.
Gonna find some Kennedy kids and score a couple of lids,
'Cause they're just a bunch of pot-heads passin' boo.

Passin' boo, passin' boo,
In the projects or the pokey,
Or the White House have a smokey,
There's an awful lot of pot-heads passin' boo.

Last night I had a dream that on my TV screen,
I saw our fearless Willie Clinton spew:
I feel your pain now that you're jailed, but you shouldn't have inhaled,
'Cause you're just a rotten pot-head passin' boo.

Passin' boo, passin' boo,
Democrats or G.O.P.,
It's the same hypocrisy,
When they crack down on the pot-heads passin' boo.

Dream about a reefer five foot long
Mighty immense but not too strong
Light a T and let it be
If you're a viper

I'm the king of everything
Gotta get high before I can swing
Sky is high and so am I
'Cause I'm a viper

When you're - - - (missing words) and you're feeling high
Everything is dandy
Hop on down to the candy store
Blow your top on peppermint candy

Then you know your body's spent
You don't care if you can't pay rent
(More missing words)
Cause you're a viper.

Also, this song is supposed to be allegorical for MJ:

I love coffee, I love tea
I love the Java jive and it loves me
Coffee and T, Java and me
A cup a cup a cup a cup a cup

I love coffee sweet and hot
Whoops Mr. Moto I'm a coffee pot
Slip me the pot and pour me a shot
A cup a cup a cup a cup a cup

(More verses, I can't log onto in my head)

Our first stop is in Bogota,to check the Columbian Fields
The natives smile and pass alond a sample of their yeild.
The sweet Jamaican pipe-dreams
Golden Acapulco nights
Then Morocco and the East
Fly by morning light.

Chorus:
We're on the train to Bangkok
aboard the Thailand express
We'll hit the stops along the way
We only stop for the best

Wreathed in smoke in Lebanon, we burn the midnight oil
The fragrance Afganistan rewards a long day's toil
Pulling into Khatmandu,
Smoke-wrings fill the air
Perfumed by a Nepal light
The Express will get you there

From: Bluesman and kde
Date: 03 Mar 01 - 02:44 AM

Here are the words to Wildwood Weed by Jim Stafford. I personally think this is the best one yet, but then I like funny shit! LOL Jim

WILDWOOD WEED

[C] The wildwood flower grew [Am] wild on the farm and we [G] never knowed what it was [G] called.
Some said it was flower. [Am] Some said it was a weed. [G] I didn't give it much [C] thought.
[C] One day I was out there [C7] talking to my brother, and I [F] reached down for a weed to chew [C] on,
And things got fuzzy, and [Am] things got blurry, and [G] then everything was [C] gone.
I didn't know what [Am] happened, but I knew it beat the [G] hell out of sniffin' [C] burlap.

[C] I came to and my [Am] brother was there and he said, "Boy, [G] what's wrong with your [C] eyes?"
I said, "I don't know. I was [Am] chewing on a weed." He said, [G] "Let me give it a [C] try."
[C] We spent the rest of that day and [C7] most of that night trying to [F] find my brother [C] Bill.
Caught up with him about [Am] six o'clock the next morning, [G] naked sitting on the [C] windmill.
Said he flew up there. [Am] I had to climb up and get him down. [G] He was about half [C] crazy.

[C] The very next day we picked a [Am] bunch of them weeds and [G] put 'em in the [C] sun to dry.
Then we mashed 'em up and [Am] cleaned 'em up, and put 'em in a corncob [C] pipe.
[C] Smoking them wildwood [C7] flowers got to be a habit and [F] we never seen no [C] harm.
We thought it was kind of [Am] handy, take a [G] trip and never leave the [C] farm.
A big old puff of that wildwood weed, [Am] next thing you know, you're wanderin' [G] around behind the little [C] animals.

[C] All good things got to [Am] come to an end. It's the [G] same with our wildwood [C] weeds.
One day this feller from [Am] Washington came by and [G] spied 'em, and turned white as a [C] sheet.
[C] Well, they dug and burned and they [C7] burned and dug and they killed all of [F] our cute little [C] weeds.
Then they drove away. [Am] We just smiled and waved, [G] sittin' there on that sack of [C] seeds.

[G] Y'all come hack now, ya [C] hear!

From: GUEST
Date: 03 Mar 01 - 06:43 AM

ok, try again. apologies, im new here, but i cant resist sending this (again, since the machine just ate it all once...sigh

Robin Head

Twas in the forest of Sherwood in the year twelve hundred and ten
Lived a pusher by the name of Robin Head, and his band of very merry men
They lived on nuts and berries, occasionally spotted deer
Doing the macrobiotic thing and exuding oodles of cheer

The sound of merry laughter echoed through the forest green
There was friar tuck- with which nothing rhymes- and marion the acid queen
Said little john, lets have some mead, said robin, oh whats the point?
Im tired of doing this venison thing, come on, lets roll a joint

Just then through the forest came the sound of the sherrifs men
They said ello, ello, ello, and whats all this ere, then?
Youll have to come along with us, to the palace of the king.
Said Robin, oh man, dont be so uptight, i was only doing my thing

Robin bifd them a fond farewell, and to Marion gave a kiss
and went with certain substances for further analysis
and the people came from miles around, their hero for to see
for the man who always gave big deals was of grat popularity

So Robin was brought before the throne of Nottinghams horrible king
He said seven years ive been after you, and now youll bloody well swing,
But just before i sentence you, for the evils what youve done
Tell me, what is this weed that grows in the woods, i think i will try some....

Seveeral minutes passed away, and the air grew somewhat thick,
He said hey wow, the colours, man and was promptly orribly sick
So now this tale it has an end as happy as it began
Robin deals for the coutryside, and the sherrif does nottingham

Excuse the spelling, the sun ishining on the monitor too bright to actually see what im doing
Robin should be played as weedy, the sherrif as pinched and mean, then stoned...the guardsmen are stereotypical bobbies
The tune is very simple. but i dont know how to get it to you...
Hope thats raised a smile for a few people!

And how could one forget the words of the immortal Itchycoo Park

Over bridge of sighs
To rest my eyes in shades of green
Under dreamin' skies
To Itchycoo Park, that's where I've been

What did you do there?
I got high
What did you feel there?
Well I cried
But why the tears then?
I'll tell you why
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful

By Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott (Small Faces)

Or The Beatles' Day in a Life

Found my coat and grabbed my hat,
Made the bus in seconds flat,
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
And somebody spoke and I went into a dream.

I heard a news today, oh boy,
Four thousand holes in Blackburn Lancashire,
And though the holes were rather small,
We had to count them all,
Now we know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall,
I'd love to turn you on.

Or we could drag up the Puff the Magic Dragon controversy again.

From: BanjoRay
Date: 04 Mar 01 - 09:45 AM

I'm amazed noone has mentioned the classic masterpiece by Shel Silverstein and sung by Doctor Hook (with words maybe modified by my memory):

I was sittin' in my basement
I just rolled myself a taste
of something green and gold and glorious
To see me through the day
When a voice called through the transom
"Get your coat and grab your hat son,
There's a nut down on the corner
Givin' dollar bills away"

So I lay around a bit and I had another hit
And I rolled up a bomber and I thought about my momma
And I lay around and jacked around and fooled around and ooooh.....

Cho:
I got stoned and I missed it (x2)
I got stone and it rolled right by
I got stone and I missed it (x2)
I got stoned, oh me oh my!

Well it took six months of urgin'
Just to get that local virgin
With the sweet face up to my place
To fool around a bit
In the mornin' she was rosy
And she smuggled up so cosy
When she asked me how I'd liked it, well it hurt me to admit...

Chorus

I aint makin no excuses
For the many things I uses
Just to brighten my relationships
And see me through the day
But when my earthly race is over
And I'm ready for the clover
When they ask me how my life has been
I guess I'll have to say...

chorus (with "I was" instead of "I got")

Cheers

Ray

----------------

MISTER OWSLEY
Words: Stephen L. Suffet © 1998, 2001
Tune: "Darling Cory" (traditional)

In the hills of San Francisco,
It's there Mr. Owsley dwells;
Makes the finest lysergic acid,
What he doesn't take himself he sells.

Wake up, wake up, Mr. Owsley,
What makes you sleep so sound?
The federal agents are a-comin',
Gonna tear your laboratory down.

Well the first time I saw Mr. Owsley,
He was standin' on the Sproul Hall quad,
And the last time that I saw him,
He got busted by the narco squad.

Wake up.... etc.

Come here, come here, Mr. Owsley,
And bring me your little sugar cubes;
I wanna light up my neurons,
Like a million neon tubes.

Wake up.... etc.

When the sun goes down on Sunday,
Give me eight hundred micrograms or nine;
When the sun comes up on Monday,
Don't expect me to still have a mind.

Wake up... etc.

Dig a hole, did a hole in the meadow,
Dig a hole a the cold, cold ground,
Dig a hole, dig a hole in my cerebrum,
Gonna lay my nervous system down.

Wake up... etc.

One of my all time favorites is HENRY by New Riders o/t Purple Sage.

Every year along about this time it all gets dry
Nothing 'round for love or money bearly gets you high
Henry got his truck and said he'd run to Mexico
See if he could come back home with 29 keys of gold

Now the road to Acapulco is very hard indeed
And it isn't any better if you haven't any weed
Henry's driving hard and fast on twisty mountain roads
50 people back waitin' back at home for Henry's load

Chorus:
And now he's rolling down the mountain going fast, fastfast
And if he blows it this ones gonna be his last
He went to Acapulco to turn the golden key
Henry keep your brakes on for this corner if you please.

Henry got to Mexico and turned his truck around
He's talking with the man who has it growing from the ground
Henry tasted he got wasted, couldn't even see
How he's gonna drive like that is not too clear to me

Chorus

Sunday afternoon Tijuana is a lovely town
The bullfights bring the tourists and their money flowing down
The border guards are much too busy there at at 5 o'clock
Henry's truckin' right on through and hardly even stops

Chorus End

That's it from what's left of my memory. Who say's pot wrecks your memory.
That album also has the wonderful Glendale Train song.
You might be able to find the song with tabs on OLGA at Harmony Central.com
Enjoy, Tom

Lonesome EJ - Yeah, that's an all around great album. I remember the Blue Oyster Cult cut you mentioned. I loved that band growing up. Seven Screaming DizzBusters AHHHHHHHHH. Fist two albums are I think the best. Tom

Don't Step on the Grass Sam...
(Steppenwolf) Words and music by John Kay

Starin' at the boob tube, turnin' on the big knob
Tryin' to find some life in the waste land
Fin'ly found a program, gonna deal with Mary Jane
Ready for a trip into hate land
Obnoxious Joe comes on the screen
Along with his guest self-righteous Sam
And one more guy who doesn't count
His hair and clothes are too far out

While pushin' back his glasses Sam is sayin' casually
"I was elected by the masses"
And with that in mind he starts to unwind
A vicious attack on the finest of grasses

Well it's evil, wicked, mean and nasty
(Don't step on the grass, Sam)
And it will ruin our fair country
(Don't be such an ass, Sam)
Well, it will hook your Sue and Johnny
(You're so full of bull, Sam)
All will pay that disagree with me
(Please give up you already lost the fight, alright)

Misinformation Sam and Joe
Are feeding to the nation
But the one who didn't count counted them out
By exposing all their false quotations
Faced by a very awkward situation
This is all he'd say to save the day

Well it's evil, wicked, mean and nasty
(Don't step on the grass, Sam)
And it will ruin our fair country
(Don't be such an ass, Sam)
Well, it will hook your Sue and Johnny
(You're so full of bull, Sam)
All will pay that disagree with me
(Please give up you already lost the fight alright)

You waste my coin Sam, all you can
To jail my fellow man
For smoking all the noble weed
You need much more than him
You've been telling lies so long
Some believe they're true
So they close their eyes to things
You have no right to do
Just as soon as you are gone
Hope will start to climb
Please don't stay around too long
You're wasting precious time

Repeat Chorus

SHANTY
(Jonathan Edwards)

Gonna sit down in the kitchen, fix me somethin' good to eat,
Make my head a little high, make the whole day complete.
We're gonna lay around the shanty, mama, and put a good buzz on.

Pass it to me, baby. pass it to me slow.
Take time out to smile a little before you let it go.
We're gonna lay around the shanty, mama, and put a good buzz on.

There ain't nothin' to do, and there's always room for more.
Fill it, light it, shut up, and close the door.
We're gonna lay around the shanty, mama, and put a good buzz on.

We're gonna sit down in the kitchen, fix us somethin' good to eat,
Make our heads a little high, make the whole day complete.
We're gonna lay around the shanty, mama, and put a good buzz on.
(Every night and day, if I can help it)
We're gonna lay around the shanty, mama and put a good buzz on.

The BBC, of all institutions, used to regularly play a song that mentioned weed in a positive light. Something about, "Good-bye Bill, good-bye Ben ... " Can anyone recall this one?

Good thread - great memories of the Box Brothers from up in Suffolk playing "If You'se a Viper" at one of my weddings. And of doing Micca's song in the bar of the Europa a while back in the aftermath of a particularly tense July 12 stand-off at the Ormeau Bridge. Never could work out why the diplomatic corps turned me down...:^)

Now then, anyone got any chocolate?

John, that was a kid's programme. 3 marionettes - Bill and Ben (who lived in flowerpots), and their friend, Little Weed, who was a flower. As with Magic Roundabout, it's much better viewed under the influence of something (alcoholic or toke-wise, it's up to you).

Grab.

Les from Hull, LonesomeEJ, and other Freak Brothers fans, the "Strike a Match" page got reprinted in the "Freak Brothers Library, volume 1", from Rip Off Press, naturally. Interestingly, puts Jay Unger in the same category as Chaucer; poets that have been illustrated by Gilbert Shelton. (If you haven't seen his illustrations of the Miller's tale, I recommend them. I got mine in the "coloring book" section of a museum shop. The introduction pointed out that since there was a full page picture facing each page of text, it was the most illustrated example of Chaucer's work to date.)*.*.*.*.*oh, sorry, you know how it is, I got a little buzzed on the subject and really got into it*.*.*.do we need any more papers or something?

Thanks, Sorcha.

I just wrote this the other day:

Weeds (Michael Rofkar)

They call me Skip, I'm a handyman
I do odd jobs whenever I can
I'll fix the leak on your commode
My truck can haul off any load
I'll mow the lawn and mend the fence
Or I can paint your residence

One day last month I's hurtin' for scratch
Went to clear this old boy's blackberry patch
There was roots and stickers, thorns and brambles
And smack in the middle of that shambles
What do you think that I did see
A bunch of weeds as tall as me

I told myself (I's kinda jokin')
Looks like them weeds they use for smokin'
I rolled a spliff and fired it up
Went for a soak in the old hot tub
I can't describe what I was seeing
But I got this feeling of well-being

Ain't been feeling good, couldn't eat a bite
Them weeds brought back my appetite
And I don't like that skunk aroma
But it sure works good on my glaucoma
So I told my doctor and he said, Skip
I'm gonna write you up a scrip

You take this down to the weeds collective
Just watch for DEA detectives
This is old Skip here, over and out
I guess you got what I'm talkin' about
Two things about me you oughta know
Don't tread on me and let the wild weeds grow

Laurie and Jennie, who lived accross the hall from me, my freshman year at Transylvania College had a record of a song that went
1st verse. I like marijuanna. I like marijuanna. I like marijuanna. I sure do like being stoned.
2nd. verse. You'll like marijuanna. You'll like marijuanna. You'll like marijuanna. You sure will like being stoned.
I also remember, from my college days a song about "Just lay around the shanty hone, and put a good buzz on." But I don't remember who recorded it.
When my sister has friends in, they all light up a joint. I'm allergic to marijuanna, so I have to leave. ( The alternative is not breathing. I'm seriously into oxygen.) The last time I visited her, I had to spend my evenings by myself. I can't visit my sister. I can't say I like marijuanna.

From: JennyO

There's a song I've heard around a lot that I first heard sung by the Bushwackers a long time ago, called "MARIJUANA AUSTRALIANA" I had incredible trouble finding the lyrics anywhere though. The best I could do was this. Here is a link to that site.

Marijuana Australiana

The person who posted these lyrics seemed to be having trouble with one word. Personally, I think the line is
"It's the greatest craze since the Tivoli days",
as in the Tivoli Theatre. Here is part of what they say, and their lyrics:

A song written by a man named Brendan Hanley, aka Mook Bahoo. It was first recorded by Australian folk group The Bushwackers in 1981 for their album Faces In The Street.
In the liner notes of that album, it is written:

This song has been written for inclusion in a Nimbin musical production about the joys of smoking pot, so obviously the performance of this song often caused a fuss with the conservatives.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you heard the word about the herb superb?
You can take it from an ocker like me
Just take a toke for a bit of a joke and you're outta ya coolibah tree
And the bloke next door who wants to call the cops
'Cause you're smilin' and lookin' happy
He should plant a few seeds
Grow a few weeds
And the world don't look so crappy

Talk about
Marijuana Australiana
Cheaper than booze
Safer than pills
Make you sing like Frank Sinatra
Marijuana
Definitely top banana
It's the greatest craze since the tibbeldy days
You can buy it from your nearest farmer

I was layin' a rave on this cocky
about changin' some of our laws
I said,
"you know, they arrest us folks with grass
and they lock us up indoors"
He said,
"serves you right for smokin' that crap it leads you to the harder stuff"
But then I found he was growin'
a whole plantation
'cause life on the land's a bit tough

Growin' that
Marijuana Australiana
Cheaper than booze
Safer than pills
Make you sing like Norman Gunston
Marijuana
Definitely top banana
It's the greatest craze since the dibbeldy days
You can buy it from your nearest farmer

(Spoken)
Well I suppose
Some of you want to know
Where you can get a deal of good, sticky head
Well I'm pleased to tell ya
That there's one in every town
Only the other day
I bought a policeman's boot
Full of sticky head / full of hash oil
For three thousand dollars
Yes folks
From Hobart to Darwin
Just go to the local cop shops
Bondi Beach
From Fremantle to Footscray
From Albury to Wodonga
To Griffiths
Wherever the police peer into your garden
Even the dogs in the street know...

The drug squad
They have the best
They pinch from the people they bust
And they'll sell you some
For a bloody great profit
If you can't find one you can trust
And apart from that
All the doctors
They gotta keep up the country's tax
So when the pills and the grog start to rot your old body
Got a much better way to relax

Smokin' that
Marijuana Australiana
Cheaper than booze
Safer than pills
Make you sing like Joan Sutherland
Marijuana
Definitely top banana
It's the greatest craze since the tribbeldy days
You can buy it from your nearest farmer

(chanted)
Smoke a reefer
Smoke a reefer
Smoke a reefer
Smoke a reefer

Now I'm not saying you should smoke the old grass
It'll stuff up your lungs
And smokin',
It makes you old and sick instead of healthy and young
(have a bong!)
But plant a few seeds
Grow a few weeds
Rip off a head or two
And boil up the billy for a cup of herbal tea
You'll get the right point of view

smokin' that
Marijuana Australiana
Cheaper than booze
Safer than pills
Make you sing like Kamahl
Marijuana
Definitely top banana
It's the greatest craze since the ribaldry days
You can buy it from your nearest farmer

Smokin' that
Marijuana Australiana
Cheaper than booze
Safer than pills
Make you sing like the birds in spring
Marijuana
Definitely top banana
It's the greatest craze since the triple d days
You can buy it from your nearest farmer

It's the greatest craze since the tibbeldy days
You can buy it from your nearest farmer

Subject: Lyr Add: COSMIC AND FREAKY (Grit Laskin)
From: JennyO
Date: 15 Jul 03 - 09:17 AM

Then there's "Cosmic and Freaky" by Grit Laskin - a parody of "Pleasant and Delightful" and while not really a weed song, it is sort of in that spirit, especially when my friend Rhymin' Simon sings it.

In the lines "..the pipes in the meadow, man they blew me away",
he sings "..the grass in the meadow it blew me away":

COSMIC AND FREAKY
(Grit Laskin)
It was cosmic and freaky,
on a midsummer's day
And the pipes in the meadow,
Man, they blew me away,
And the blackbirds and the thrushes
were into their own thing,
And the larks got off on music,
Man like all they did was sing

A freak and his ol' lady
were out tripping through the heather
Said the freak to his ol' lady,
"Man, my head's not together,
So I'm trucking out to Frisco,
Where the alpha waves run free,
And the highs you reach on skateboards,
Have transcended LSD."

Well, a picture of his Earth Shoe,
she instantly drew
Saying, "This is where I'm at, man,
I'm still tuned into you."
And as they dug each other's head space,
Tears from her eyes he did see
She said "Can I come?" and he said "No,
Man, don't lay that trip on me."

He said, "Man, we're getting heavy,
I'm not into what's going down
The taxi meter's running,
and I'm [turned/bummed off this town
But you'll still be my ol' lady
If you're ever near San Francisco
After all, babe, you're a Pisces,
And I'm a Scorpio."

Simon also does a very clever parody of Banjo Patterson's "Clancy of the Overflow", called "Clancy of the Party Cone", by Banjo Pack-us-one. I can't find the words, though. And Simon is not divulging his sources. I know he didn't write it though.

Jenny
